An Experimental Study on the Noise Reduction and the Feasibility of Short Current of a Silencer for a High Voltage COS Fuse (고전압 COS 퓨즈용 소음기의 소음저감 및 전류차단 성능에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This experimental study describes the noise reduction and the feasibility of short current of a silencer for a high voltage COS(cut out switch) fuse of a transformer. When a high voltage COS fuse becomes a short circuit by the over current, the strong impulse noise over 150 dB(A) is generated. For the purpose of the reduction of impulse noise, in this study, the diffuser type and the reactive type silencers have been designed and tested, respectively. And also the electrical test on the short current is performed. From the experimental results, the well designed reactive type silencer has been shown to have the noise reduction of about 20 dB(A). It has been found that the feasibility of short current for the COS fuse is closely related to the porosity of the silencer.

  • In a capacitor-discharge impulse magnetizer, one of the magnetic application system, a magnet is magnetized by the discharging current of capacitors. The conventional design of the magnetizer has been based on many year's experience. The behaviour of flux in the magnetizer should be calculated in order to produce the desired magnets. The analysis of the flux distribution is quite difficult. This is because both the magnetizing current and the applied voltage to the magnetizer are unknown. This paper describes the development of computer model for a capacitor-discharge impulse magnetizer using SPICE. Also, the detailed distribution of the flux density in a magnet magnetized by the impulse magnetizer be analyed.

  • In this work, in order to investigate the effect of lightning impulse currents on ZnO surge arrester. and the deterioration characteristics of ZnO surge arrester, 8/20 [${\mu}s$], 2.5 [kA] impulse currents were applied to the ZnO surge arrester under test. The leakage currents of ZnO surge arrester were measured and ZnO element was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. As a result, the resistive leakage current of ZnO surge arrester was increased with the injection number of lightning impulse currents.

  • This paper presents the transient impedance behaviors of grounding systems to lightning impulse current. The potential rise and effective impulse ground impedance of the test grounding electrodes were measured as a function of the rise time of impulse currents and lengths of down conductor. The transient ground impedances strongly depend on the configuration and size of grounding electrodes, the impulse current shapes and lengths of down conductor, and the inductance of reduce of grounding electrode inductance is an important factor to improve the transient ground impedance.

  • This paper describes impulse grounding impedance and touch voltage when impulse current is injected to grounding systems for distribution concrete pole. Impulse grounding impedance is a significant factor in analyzing transient grounding impedance. The touch voltage is measured in four directions. The maximum touch voltage was 520V and the minimum touch voltage was 47.3V when the input current was 100A.

  • This paper presents the leakage current characteristics of ZnO varistors exposed to the $8/20{\mu}s$ lightning impulse currents as functions of the number of injection and amplitude of impulse currents. The surge simulator system ECAT that can generate $8/20{\mu}s$ impulse currents with a peak short-circuit of $5[kA_p]$ was used. Leakage currents flowing through ZnO varistors subjected to the $8/20{\mu}s$ impulse currents were measured under 60 Hz AC voltages. The trend curves of resistive leakage current of ZnO varistors were analytically calculated.

  • The current study addresses experimental and computational work of impulse wave discharged from the exit of two kinds of right-angle pipe bends, which are attached to the open end of a simple shock tube. The weak normal shock wave with its magnitude of Mach number from 1.02 to 1.20 is employed to obtain the impulse wave propagating outside the exit of the pipe bends. A Schlieren optical system visualizes the impulse wave discharged from the exit of the pipe bends at an instant. The experimental data of the magnitude of the impulse wave and its propagating directivity are analyzed to characterize the impulse waves discharged from the exit of the pipe bends and compared with those discharged from a straight pipe. Computational results well predict the experimented dynamic behaviors of the impulse wave. The results obtained show that a right-angle miter bend considerably reduces the magnitude of the impulse wave and its directivity toward to the pipe axis, compared with the straight pipe and right-angle smooth bend. It is believed that the right-angle miter bend pipe can playa role of a passive control against the impulse wave.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of external inductor for impulse current waveform with 10/350 ${\mu}s$ time parameters. Impulse generator was composed with capacitor having large capacitance and low working voltage for the safe of operator and small discharging sound. Parallel R-L-C circuits with crow-bar gaps and superposition method were proposed to make a high current lightning impulse according to IEC 62305-1. The high energy inductor with several taps for fitting half decay time T2 within the tolerance range and experimental data of inductance according to charging voltages were suggested.

  • This paper describes the comparison results on electrical characteristic changes of ZnO blocks by lightning impulse current. The five types of ZnO blocks used in lightning arrester for distribution lines have been estimated repeatedly till about 400 times by a standard lightning impulse current of 3kA, $8/20{\mu}s$, and changes of the performance characteristics of them to operation times were examined and compared quantitatively every fifty times discharge. It is expected that the result will be useful to diagnose the soundness of ZnO blocks or lightning arresters, and to develope deterioration diagnosis device for them.

  • This paper presents experimental results of transient impedance characteristics investigated on the site of a large-scale grounding system using impulse current. The ground potential rise was measured while injecting an impulse current and the transient impedance was determined. As a results, the transient impedance was significantly greater than the stationary grounding resistance due to high inductance of ground conductors and leads.
