  • This paper presents a novel algorithm for nighttime detection of the lane markers painted on a road at night. First of all, the proposed algorithm uses neighborhood average filtering, 8-directional Sobel operator and thresholding segmentation based on OTSU's to handle raw lane images taken from a digital CCD camera. Secondly, combining intensity map and gradient map, we analyze the distribution features of pixels on boundaries of lanes in the nighttime and construct 4 feature sets for these points, which are helpful to supply with sufficient data related to lane boundaries to detect lane markers much more robustly. Then, the searching method in multiple directions- horizontal, vertical and diagonal directions, is conducted to eliminate the noise points on lane boundaries. Adapted Hough transformation is utilized to obtain the feature parameters related to the lane edge. The proposed algorithm can not only significantly improve detection performance for the lane marker, but it requires less computational power. Finally, the algorithm is proved to be reliable and robust in lane detection in a nighttime scenario.

  • A smart parking management requires to track a vehicle in a indoor parking lot and to detect the place where the vehicle is parked. An advanced parking system watches all space of the parking lot with CCTV cameras. We can use these cameras for vehicles tracking and detection. In order to cover a wide area with a camera, a fisheye lens is used. In this case the shape and size of an moving vehicle vary much with distance and angle to the camera. This makes vehicle detection and tracking difficult. In addition to the fisheye lens, the vehicle headlights also makes vehicle detection and tracking difficult. This paper describes a method of realtime vehicle detection and tracking robust to the harsh situation described above. In each image frame, we update the region of a vehicle and estimate the vehicle movement. First we approximate the shape of a car with a quadrangle and estimate the four sides of the car using multiple histograms of oriented gradient. Second we create a template by applying a distance transform to the car region and estimate the motion of the car with a template matching method.

  • Understanding consumers' latent desires for product form has now become a critical issue in product design. Accordingly, product development processes is rapidly changing from product-oriented development to user-centered development. Driver visibility is considered as an important element of driving posture packaging in automobile interior design. This study presents a systematic process for driver visibility analysis approached from affective engineering method that provides design variable selection and screening with respect to the image/impression element of the human visibility. Also, the analysis of front visibility, often called the feeling of "openness", in motor vehicle interior design, is selected and practiced a case study using the systematic process proposed in this study. Twenty six participants evaluated the feeling of openness for thirty motor vehicles following the perceived scale of affective design factors. The results showed that variables such as the height of head lining, the height of cluster housing, the gradient of windshield and the volume of A-pillar were the critical design variables which affect the feeling of openness in a motor vehicle.

  • In this paper, we review two-dimensional measuring methods referring to target patterns. The patterns consist of two linearly-repeated patterns or is designed repeatedly in two-dimension. The repeated properties are reflectivity, refractivity, air-gapping distance, capacitance, magnetic reluctance, electrical resistance and sloping gradient, etc. However, the optical methods are generally used for high speed processing and density, and their encoding principles are treated here. In case of two-dimensional pattern, as there is not inherently error between single units encoding the pattern except for the metrology frame errors, the end-effector position of an object accompanying the pattern can be measured with respect of the global frame without via error. Therefore, it is regarded as a substitute for laser interferometer with severe environmental constraints and has been applied to the high-accurate planar actuator.

  • Melting method has long been considered difficult to realize because of problems such as the low foamability of molten metal, the varying size of cellular structures and solidification shrinkage. The parameters to solve the problem in electric furnace were stirring temperature, stirring velocity, heating velocity and foaming temperature It is important to consider the effects of induction heating, because it brings about the inner flow by the temperature gradient. Aspect ratio also depends on the induction heating. Mechanical properties are dependent on cell sizes and aspect rations. Therefore, this paper presents the effects of these parameters on the cell sizes. For the sake of this, combined stirring process was used to fabricate aluminum foam materials by the above mentioned parameters. Image analysis was performed to calculate the cell sizes, distributions, and aspect ratioes at the cross section of feared aluminum in the direction of height.

  • In this raper in order to recover sharp object boundaries we propose a new efficient stereo matching algorithm in which window size is varied to the distance from the boundaries of object. To this end, the processing region is divided into small subregions with a same area and the disparities of the center pixels in the subregions are calculated using a area-based algorithm with multiple windows. From the this disparity map we can find the edges of the contracted objects. The disparities of original image are obtained using the gradient constraint that means the disparity of the center pixel is similar to the ones of the remaining pixels in the subregion. from the experimental results it is found that the proposed algorithm is very good for recovering sharp object boundaries compared to the similar different algorithm.

  • Deep learning has been actively studied for predicting protein secondary structure based only on the sequence information of the amino acids constituting the protein. In this paper, we compared the performances of the convolutional neural networks of various structures to predict the protein secondary structure. To investigate the optimal depth of the layer of neural network for the prediction of protein secondary structure, the performance according to the number of layers was investigated. We also applied the structure of GoogLeNet and ResNet which constitute building blocks of many image classification methods. These methods extract various features from input data, and smooth the gradient transmission in the learning process even using the deep layer. These architectures of convolutional neural networks were modified to suit the characteristics of protein data to improve performance.

  • This paper presents a priori and the local font classification method. The font classification uses ascenders, descenders, and serifs extracted from a word image. The gradient features of those sub-images are extracted, and used as an input to a neural network classifier to produce font classification results. The font classification determines 2-font styles (upright or slant), 3-font groups (serif, sans serif, or typewriter), and 7-font names (PostScript fonts such as Avant Garde, Helvetica, Bookman, New Century Schoolbook, Palatino, Times, or Courier). The proposed a priori and local font classification method allows an OCR system consisting of various font-specific character segmentation tools and various mono-font character recognizers.

  • Edge detection is one of the important technologies to simplify images in the text, lane and object recognition implementation process, and various studies are actively carried out at home and abroad. Existing edge detection methods include a method to detect edge by applying directional gradient masks in spatial space, and a mathematical morphology-based edge detection method. These existing detection methods show insufficient edge detection results in excessively dark or bright images. In this regard, to complement these drawbacks, we proposed an algorithm using the Sobel and histogram equalization among the existing methods.

  • In MRI, an image contrast can be developed as a result of the susceptibility effect if an object has paramagnetic substances. This is mainly due to the non-uniform phase distribution or linear gradient developed by the magnetic susceptibility within a voxel, which in turn reduces the signal intensity; e.g., spin phases are dephased and thereby cancel each other resulting in a reduced signal. In this paper, a new concept for manipulating the susceptibility effect through the use of tailored RF pulses is proposed. As potential applications of the method, two different types of tailored RF pulses are introduced: one for susceptibility artifact correction and the other for contrast enhancement. The latter, for example, can be applied to angiography utilizing the paramagnetic property of deoxygenated blood. Both a theoretical study of the method and experimental results are reported.
