In this paper, we proposed a recognition system of smile facial expression for smile treatment training. The proposed system detects face candidate regions by using Haar-like features from camera images. After that, it verifies if the detected face candidate region is a face or non-face by using SVM(Support Vector Machine) classification. For the detected face image, it applies illumination normalization based on histogram matching in order to minimize the effect of illumination change. In the facial expression recognition step, it computes facial feature vector by using PCA(Principal Component Analysis) and recognizes smile expression by using a multilayer perceptron artificial network. The proposed system let the user train smile expression by recognizing the user's smile expression in real-time and displaying the amount of smile expression. Experimental result show that the proposed system improve the correct recognition rate by using face region verification based on SVM and using illumination normalization based on histogram matching.
This paper historically sheds the new lights on the artistic worth and achievement of abstract animation in the animation genre, and presents the contemporary significance and importance of abstract animation through the study on the avant-garde characteristic and the works of abstract animation artist, including Mirai Mizue. Though abstract animation which is artists' experimental work dealing with speed and movement of image has an essential role for the development of modern visual culture and animation, it is losing meaning and value because of the commercialism and capitalism of digital contents industry. Therefore, this paper first presents that the study of experimental animation like abstract animation contributes to the diversification and improvement of digital contents industry then it discusses the effect on the contemporary digital contents industries, next analyze the historical development and comtemporary evolution of abstract animation, which is diversified from modernism to contemporary art, and finally discuss the experimental feature and expression of abstract animation.

This paper suggests a Map Accuracy Standards by analyzing U.S. National Map Accuracy Standards, by considering korean terrain feature and statistical error theory for paper and digital maps on the scale of 1:50,000. Map accuracy standards require horizontal accuracy to be reported as a circular error with 90% confidence level through Linear Error Probable(LEP) theory and Circular Error Probable(CEP) theory. In order to verify the proposed methodology for positioning accuracy testing, several kinds of test point were selected and tested. These test points were extracted at the centers of roads and bridges, the comers of the independent building, the edges of geographical botany, and the tops of mountains. The positioning accuracy assessment was peformed by comparing the positions of test points in digital maps generated three different sources with those acquired by high accurate GPS surveying. The digital maps were produced from aerial photographs and SPOT satellite image using analytical plotter and 1:50,000 paper map.

The objective of the present study is to compare various conventional and recently evolved satellite image-processing techniques and to ascertain the best possible technique that can identify and position of aquaculture farms accurately in and around the Younggwang coastal area. Several conventional techniques performed to extract such information fiom the Landsat-TM imagery do not seem to yield better information about the aquaculture farms, and lead to misclassification. The large errors between the actual and extracted aquaculture farm information are due to existence of spectral confusion and inadequate spatial resolution of the sensor. This leads to possible occurrence of mixture pixels or 'mixels' of the source of errors in the classification techniques. Understanding the confusing and mixture pixel problems requires the development of efficient methods that can enable more reliable extraction of aquaculture farm information. Thus, the more recently evolved methods such as the step-by-step partial spectral end-member extraction and linear spectral unmixing methods are introduced. The farmer one assumes that an end-member, which is often referred to as 'spectrally pure signature' of a target feature, does not appear to be a spectrally pure form, but always mix with the other features at certain proportions. The assumption of the linear spectral unmxing is that the measured reflectance of a pixel is the linear sum of the reflectance of the mixture components that make up that pixel. The classification accuracy of the step-by-step partial end-member extraction improved significantly compared to that obtained from the traditional supervised classifiers. However, this method did not distinguish the aquaculture ponds and non-aquaculture ponds within the region of the aquaculture farming areas. In contrast, the linear spectral unmixing model produced a set of fraction images for the aquaculture, water and soil. Of these, the aquaculture fraction yields good estimates about the proportion of the aquaculture farm in each pixel. The acquired proportion was compared with the values of NDVI and both are positively correlated (R$^2$ =0.91), indicating the reliability of the sub-pixel classification.ixel classification.

In recent years, Super-pixels have become very popular for use in computer vision applications. Super-pixel algorithm transforms pixels into perceptually feasible regions to reduce stiff features of grid pixel. In particular, super-pixels are useful to depth estimation, skeleton works, body labeling, and feature localization, etc. But, it is not easy to generate a good super-pixel partition for doing these tasks. Especially, super-pixels do not satisfy more meaningful features in view of the gestalt aspects such as non-sum, continuation, closure, perceptual constancy. In this paper, we suggest an advanced algorithm which combines simple linear iterative clustering with fuzzy clustering concepts. Simple linear iterative clustering technique has high adherence to image boundaries, speed, memory efficient than conventional methods. But, it does not suggest good compact and regular property to the super-pixel shapes in context of gestalt aspects. Fuzzy similarity measures provide a reasonable graph in view of bounded size and few neighbors. Thus, more compact and regular pixels are obtained, and can extract locally relevant features. Simulation shows that fuzzy similarity based super-pixel building represents natural features as the manner in which humans decompose images.

This paper deals with a system that is capable of recognizing hand-signals in 3-dimensional space. The system uses 2 color cameras as input devices. Vision-based gesture recognition system is known to be user-friendly because of its contact-free characteristic. But as with other applications using a camera as an input device, there are difficulties under complex background and varying illumination. In order to detect hand region robustly from a input image under various conditions without any special gloves or markers, the paper uses previous position information and adaptive hand color model. The paper defines a hand-signal as a combination of two basic elements such as 'hand pose' and 'hand trajectory'. As an extensive classification method for hand pose, the paper proposes 2-stage classification method by using 'small group concept'. Also, the paper suggests a complementary feature selection method from images from two color cameras. We verified our method with a hand-signal application to our driving simulator.

Text understand in natural images has become an active research field in the past few decades. In this paper, we present an automatic recognition system in Korean signboards with a complex background. The proposed algorithm includes detection, binarization and extraction of text for the recognition of shop names. First, we utilize an elaborate detection algorithm to detect possible text region based on edge histogram of vertical and horizontal direction. And detected text region is segmented by clustering method. Second, the text is divided into individual characters based on connected components whose center of mass lie below the center line, which are recognized by using a minimum distance classifier. A shape-based statistical feature is adopted, which is adequate for Korean character recognition. The system has been implemented in a mobile phone and is demonstrated to show acceptable performance.

Automated Vision Inspection (AVI) systems automatically detect any defect feature in a surface image. The performance of the system can be measured under a special circumstances such as ultimate defect detection. In this situation, the defect signal level is similar to noise level and it becomes hard to make a solid decision with AVI systems. In this paper, we propose an effective preprocessing technique to enhance SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio). The method is motivated by some principles of HVS (Human Visual System) and RLC (Run Length Coding) techniques is used for this purpose. The proposed preprocessing technique enhances SNR under ultimate defect conditions and improves overall performance of AVI system.

In many face recognition problems, the number of available images is limited compared to the dimension of the input space which is usually equal to the number of pixels. This problem is called as the 'small sample size' problem and regularization methods are typically used to solve this problem in feature extraction methods such as LDA. By using regularization methods, the modified within class matrix becomes nonsingu1ar and LDA can be performed in its original form. However, in the process of adding a scaled version of the identity matrix to the original within scatter matrix, the scale factor should be set heuristically and the performance of the recognition system depends on highly the value of the scalar factor. By using the proposed resampling method, we can generate a set of images similar to but slightly different from the original image. With the increased number of images, the small sample size problem is alleviated and the classification performance increases. Unlike regularization method, the resampling method does not suffer from the heuristic setting of the parameter producing better performance.

The swirling flow developing in Francis turbine draft tube under part load operation leads to pressure fluctuations usually in the range of 0.2 to 0.4 times the runner rotational frequency resulting from the so-called vortex breakdown. For low cavitation number, the flow features a cavitation vortex rope animated with precession motion. Under given conditions, these pressure fluctuations may lead to undesirable pressure fluctuations in the entire hydraulic system and also produce active power oscillations. For the upper part load range, between 0.7 and 0.85 times the best efficiency discharge, pressure fluctuations may appear in a higher frequency range of 2 to 4 times the runner rotational speed and feature modulations with vortex rope precession. It has been pointed out that for this particular operating point, the vortex rope features elliptical cross section and is animated of a self-rotation. This paper presents an experimental investigation focusing on this peculiar phenomenon, defined as the upper part load vortex rope. The experimental investigation is carried out on a high specific speed Francis turbine scale model installed on a test rig of the EPFL Laboratory for Hydraulic Machines. The selected operating point corresponds to a discharge of 0.83 times the best efficiency discharge. Observations of the cavitation vortex carried out with high speed camera have been recorded and synchronized with pressure fluctuations measurements at the draft tube cone. First, the vortex rope self rotation frequency is evidenced and the related frequency is deduced. Then, the influence of the sigma cavitation number on vortex rope shape and pressure fluctuations is presented. The waterfall diagram of the pressure fluctuations evidences resonance effects with the hydraulic circuit. The influence of outlet bubble cavitation and air injection is also investigated for low cavitation number. The time evolution of the vortex rope volume is compared with pressure fluctuations time evolution using image processing. Finally, the influence of the Froude number on the vortex rope shape and the associated pressure fluctuations is analyzed by varying the rotational speed.
