Because fault gouge developed at the center of fault is recognized as one of the most important weak sites, it is evident that clay mineralogy and physical properties greatly affect the rock stability. The purpose of this study is to establish the relationship of mineralogy and physical factors that control rock stability in fault zones. We analyzed a total of 51 samples from 16 main faults which were selected from a Korea fracture map, using XRD, SEM, and physical analyses like unit weight, friction and cohesion properties. Though it is considered that the most common clay minerals comprising fault gouge are kaolinite, illite and smectite, clay mineralogy slightly varies depending on lithology: illite > smectite > kaolinite and chlorite in volcanic rocks, kaolinite and chlorite > illite > smectite in sedimentary rocks, and illite > smectite > kaolinite and chlorite in abundance, respectively. Friction angle decreases with increasing clay content. Cohesion increases with increasing clay content below the 45 % region while it decreases with increasing clay content at the region higher than 45%, with some scatters in the data. It is likely that these results are ascribed to the physical heterogeneity of fault gouges with varying content of different clay minerals.
Rare and unusual occurrence of hydrothermal minerals were found in Geode mine area. They are developed in the late stage of hydrothermal alteration of earlier skarns and later by the open-space filling crystallization. The alteration of earlier skarns of clinopyroxene, garnet, and plagioclase formed mainly chlorite or sometimes uncommon hydrothermal minerals of prehnite, illite, and pumpellyite. Open-space filling crystallization characterized by hydrothermal minerals developedin open sapce or good are prehnite, pumpellyite, clinozoisite, illite, and Ca-zeolites of stilbite annstellerite. Mineral phases and paragenesis are examined in detail by microscopy, XRD, SEM, and EPMA. Using the Schreinemaker's method, equibrium reactions among these minerals are establishedand isothemal-isobaric phase diagrams of $\mu$$H_2O$-$\mu$$CO_2$cot are plotted. Hydrothermal minerals such asprehnite, pumpellyite, clinozoisite, illite, and some chlorite were ffrmed under high partial pressure of $CO_2$with relatively low $H_2$O fugacity. Later, stilbite and calcite in association with illite crystallized under relatively both high partial Pressure of $CO_2$and high $H_2$O fugacity.
The Sarisan clay deposits of hydrothermal origin are found in the intensely weathered wto-mica granite in Yeoju area. The major clay minerals of the Sarisan mine are illite and montmorillonite with minor disordered kaolinite, vermiculite, and some interstratified mineral. Clay minerals were studied using various methods including X-ray diffraction, infrared absorption spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and thermal and chemical analyses. Illites occur as discrete illite or highly illitic interstratified mineral. They are of 1M and $2M_1$ polytypes and characterized by a low lattice charge (1.768-0.926 per unit formula), low $K^+$ content (0.741-0.902 per unit formula), and high Si/Al ratio (1.154-1.293) as compared with muscovite. Montmorillonites are highly negative charged and occasionally random-interstratified as I/S with 80-98% smectite. Hydrothermal alteration is more important than later weathering alteration for the formation of illite and montmorillonite clay minerals. The hydrothermal alteration took place through two stages; the formation of illite in the early stage and the formation of montmorillonite in the late stage. Disordered kaolinite and vermiculite are the weathering products of plagioclase and biotite, respectively.
We investigated the effects of dietary supplements of probiotics, illite, active carbon and hardwood vinegar on growth performance, feed intake, and pH, shear force, sensory evaluation, meat color and fatty acid composition of meat in broilers. Two hundred broilers were fed diets for five weeks containing 0.2% of probiotics (T1), and 1% of Illite (T2), 1% active carbon (T3), or 1% hardwood vinegar (T4). Body weight gain was higher in T1 and T4 groups fed the starter diet but was the lowest in C and T4 for finishing period (P<0.05). Feed efficiency was not significantly different. In proximate composition, crude fat content of chicken meat were decreased lower in all treatment groups than control, but moisture, crude protein and crude ash were not significantly different. Cooking loss was decreased in T3 and T4 and WHC (water holing capacity) was increased in T3 and T4 groups compared to the other groups. In sensory evaluation, T4 tended to improve the hardness. Redness $(a^*)$ and yellowness $(b^*)$ were no difference between the all treatment groups, lightness $(L^*)$ were higher in T1, T2, T3 and T4 groups than control group (P<0.05). Stearic acid content was lower in T1, T2, T3 and T4 groups, but oleic acid contents were higher in T1, T2, T3 and T4 groups (P<0.05). These results showed that supplementing broiler diets with 1.0% hardwood vinegar may noticeably improve the meat quality of broiler.
Recently developed illite-age-analysis(IAA) approach was applied to determine the fault-reactivated events for the Inje fault that cut through Precambrian biotite granitic gneiss with NNE-SSW trend in the middle of Korean peninsula. Three distinct fault-reactivated events of shallow crustal regime were recognized using the combined approach of optimized illite-polytype quantification and K-Ar age-dating of clay fractions separated from 4 fault clay samples: $87.0{\pm}0.12Ma$, $65.5{\pm}0.05$ and $66.6{\pm}1.38Ma$, $45.6{\pm}0.15Ma$, respectively. As well, $2M_1$ illite ages of 193~196 Ma and $254.3{\pm}6.96Ma$ were discernible, which may be related to the fault-activated time in the relatively deep crust. The study results suggest that the Inje fault would be firstly formed at $254.3^{\circ}$${\ae}6.96Ma$ and sporadically reactivated in shallow regime since about 87 Ma. These reactivation events in shallow regime might be due to the Bulguksa orogeny that would be strongly influenced in Korean peninsula at that time.
Mineralogical and chemical examinations were performed on interstratified illite-smectite (I-S) minerals that occur in the mudstones from a petroleum exploration well in the Tertiary marine basin, Japan. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that component layers of illite in the interstratified I-S increase with increasing burial depth while those of smectie decrease. In addition, the randomly (R=0) interstratified illite-smectite is changed into Rp1 ordered I-S at a depth of about 4,000 m, which corresponds to the result of organic analysis and indicates a burial temperature of about $100^{\circ}C$. However, the present geothermal gradient shows that the conversion of the random I-S to R=0 ordered I-S is likely to occur at 3,000 m. This discrepancy may be interpreted by the reverse fault at 2,500 m which resulted in a deeper burial of sediments up to 1,000 m. Chemical analysis also shows the compositional variation in I-S with increasing depth: a decrease in Si and an increases in Al and K, indicating that the substitution of Al for Si in tetrahedral sheets is compensated by the addition of K to interlayers. K may be derived from K-feldspar and micas, which is present in the mudstones.
The pyrophyllite deposits located in Jinhae area have been studied through field observations and laboratory works including the X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP). The pyrophyllite deposits consist of mainly illite, dickite, pyrophyllite, diaspore, chlorite, pyrite and copiapite. According to the mineral assemblages, geological occurrences and alteration modes, the altered rocks can be classified into four types: Type A; quartz with silicifictaion, Type B; quartz + illite with illitization, Type C; quartz + dickite + illite with kaolin alteration, Type D; pyrophyllite + illite + dickite + diaspore with pyrophyllite alteraion. Rocks in Type A, which is generated by silicifictaion, have high $SiO_2$ contents more than 90 wt% and distinctive equigranular textures with microcrtstalline quartz. The pyrophyllites from the study area belong to 2M polytype. The host rocks of the pyrophyllite ore in this mine are rhyolitic rock, andecitic tuff and volcanic breccia. The alteration products seem to be controlled by the different lithology of the host rocks. The hydrothermal solution formed the deposits would be inferred to the acidic and have relatively high ionic activity of hydrogen and silica judging from alteration mineral assemblage. Pyrophyllite alteraion zone is generated by highest temperature condition of all alteration zone.

The samples were taken from the following localities previously classified as "Akiochi" area: Yangpyung, Puchun, and Pyungtaik, all of Kyonggi-do province. Five soil profiles were described in the field, and taken to the laboratory for physical and chemical analysis and mineralogical analysis by X-ray diffraction. The predominant clay minerals consist mainly of illite, vermiculite, chlorites and intergrade with vermiculite, and kaolinite. Illite or mica was found present in all samples and in all horizons. This was identified by the 9.83 to $10{\AA}$ (0.01) and $3.32{\AA}$ (003) basal reflections, Interhorizontal variations in mineral content and crystallinity are illustrated in their respective Xray diffractogram. Comparing the peak intensity, of the $14{\AA}$, $10{\AA}$ and $7{\AA}$ indicated the degree of weathering from the surface to the lower horizons. In general, the weathering of illite on the surface produced less pronounced $10{\AA}$ and $14{\AA}$ peak as compared to the lower horizons. The same may be said with kaolinite. On K-saturation, the $14{\AA}$ peak broadening on the low angle side was observed. This is interpreted to be due to chlorization. Heat treament from $100^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$, and $800^{\circ}C$. caused significant changes in the different diffractograms. Heating caused collasped of the $14{\AA}$ to $10{\AA}$ and the appearance of scattered peaks between $10-14{\AA}$. This is interpreted to the presence of vermiculite chlorite intergradient. The complete collapse of the $14{\AA}$ at $800^{\circ}C$ to $10{\AA}$ with increased intensity was attributed to the preservce of vermiculite. The principal difference among the clay minerals in each horizon is the concomitant increase and decrease in intensity with depth of the $14{\AA}$, $10{\AA}$ and $7{\AA}$ diffraction spacings. Apparently the weathering of illite ($10{\AA}$) is resulting in the formation of vermiculite ($14{\AA}$) and the interstratified material being an intermediate stage and the beginning of the formation of vermiculite. Some broadening- in the 17 to $18{\AA}$ was observed in Puchun-1 Pyungtaik-1 and Pyungtaik-2 specially so in the lower horizon in the Ca or Mg-saturated sample. Heated treatment tend to shift this peak to $14{\AA}$ indicating the presence of regular layering of the interstratified complex. The high amount of extractable aluminum and iron coupled with low exchange capacity indicate that iron and aluminum plays an important role in the weathering of these soils and is responsible to the low exchange capacity, high acidity and high phosphate absorptive capacity. The results presented substantiated the weathering sequence of Jackson in that mica ${\rightarrow}$ vermiculite ${\rightarrow}$ chloritezed vermiculite ${\rightarrow}$ kaolinite.
The identification works of the clay minerals in the Paju series soil of an alfisol, aquic hapludalf, which is derived from the basalt were carried out by the X-ray diffractometer and with the aid of the complete chemical analysis of the clay fractions as well. It also conducted to determine the contents of the identified minerals which correspond to peaks of the diffraction lines appeared at 0.72, 1.0, and 1.4nm respectively. The expansible 2:1 minerals, micas and micaceous minerals, kaolinite minerals, and gibbsite were identified by the X-ray method. Furthermore, the X-ray results are seemed to be partly supported by the chemical analysis because of the presence of illite in the fractions could be confirmed by the values of $SiO_2/A1_2O_3$ mole ratio which ranged from 2.33 to 2.61. The average contents of the 1.4nm minerals. montmorillonite and vermiculite, 1.0nm micas and micaceous minerals, and 0.72nm kaolinite minerals are 42%, 28%, and 30% respectively. The theoretical considerations for the formations of these minerals were also given and that seemed to be well coincided with the experimental results, The presence of the Bt horizons and the kaolinite with gibbsite equilibria in the soil could be interpreted that the weathering is deeply advanced so far under the given soil environmental conditions.
An XRD quantitative analytical method using calculated XRD patterns was discussed in this study, Deep-seabed sediments commonly contain smectite, illite, chlorite, and kaolinite, and XRD pattern of each clay mineral of appropriate chemical composition was simulated by using an XRD pattern calculation method. Theoretical peak intensities of specific reflections of four clay minerals (the 001 reflections of smectite and illite, the 004 reflection of chlorite, and the 002 reflection of kaolinite) were measured from calculated patterns, and MIF(mineral intensity factor)value of each phase was determined from the intensities of calculated patterns. The peak intensities obtaine from experimental XRD patterns of sediments were corrected using the MIF values so that the calibrated intensity values for the specimens are linearly proportional to the weight fraction of each phase, which is normalized to 100 wt%. The MIF method can provide accurate quantitaive results without the necessity of correcting the factors by the mass absorption coefficient of each phase. This method excludes the necessity of standard specimens having compositions that are similar to those of clay minerals in the sediment samples. Therefore, quantitaive analysis using XRD calculation method can be utilized for the specimens, for which the standard specimens are very difficult or impossible to obtain. this quantitative method can provide rapid, routine analysis results for a large number of samples which occur in similar geological environments.
