  • This paper presents the study result on a realization of wireless umbilical device for missile systems. In general, a missile system is connected to a fire control equipment via an umbilical connector to get the electrical power for its internal equipment and communicate with each other. And these connectors inherently have many problems of mis-contact between pin and socket, and mis-separation during missile firing, etc. A wireless umbilical device using LC resonance is devised to solve these problems of the current technology. For hundreds of watts power transmission under the missile system environment of restricted space, we designed and made a prototype of wireless umbilical device. And we tested this wireless umbilical device with an aluminum cylinder having cutout windows which simulate missiles. We realized that the wireless technology can be used as a substitute for the conventional umbilical connectors, and EMI and environment tests should be followed further.

  • This paper proposes a driver supportive device with haptic cue function which can transmit optimal gear shifting timing to a driver without requiring the driver's visual attention. Its performance is evaluated under vehicle model considering automotive engine, transmission and vehicle body. In order to achieve this goal, a torque feedback device is devised and manufactured by adopting the MR (magnetorheological) fluid and clutch mechanism. The manufactured MR clutch is then integrated with the accelerator pedal to construct the proposed haptic cue device. A virtual vehicle emulating a four-cylinder four-stroke engine, manual transmission system of a passenger vehicle and vehicle body is constructed and communicated with the manufactured haptic cue device. Control performances including torque tracking and fuel efficiency are experimentally evaluated via a simple feed-forward control algorithm.

  • The X-ray device used for medical treatment is classified into fixed type that is used by installing at the location with the stable power supply and mobile type that can be taken by moving the X-ray device to the location where a patient is. Mobile X-ray device which is typically used in the mobile type of X-ray can be used very usefully beyond the space restriction. However, due to its difficulty to generate high-voltage, it is mainly applied to take hand and foot shootings which only need low output power. In this study, by designing and producing the large volume of mobile X-ray device which doesn't have the limitations on diagnostic areas of the body, the operating characteristics of device according to the loading change was identified.

  • A vacuum metering device for garlic seeds was developed, and its metering performance was tested according to the design factors. Three design factors were as follows: suction surface diameter (Edge), suction surface curvature (Type), and guide height (Guide). The suction surface curvature represents the distance between the center of the grooved suction plate and the bottom of suction plate. The metering rate and multiple metering rate were analyzed as the metering performance of the developed device with two varieties of garlic seeds: Namhae (warm region-adapted garlic) and Uiseong (cold region-adapted garlic). The best metering performance for the Namhae seeds were found with the following conditions: An Edge, Guide and Type of 40, 4, and 35 mm, respectively. In the case of the Uiseong seeds, the best conditions were as follows: An Edge, Guide and Type of 35, 4, and 30 mm, respectively. The guide height was found to be the most influential design factor on the metering performance of the metering rate and multiple rate for both Namhae seeds and Uiseong seeds. Additionally, the interaction between the area of the suction surface and the curvature of the suction surface had some effects on the multiple rate for the Uiseong seeds. It was concluded that the guide height should be 4 mm or higher so that more than 90% of the metering rate could be achieved for the tested garlic seeds with the developed metering device.

  • In this study, an edge device that monitors the injection molding process by measuring the mold vibration(acceleration) signal and the mold surface temperature was developed and evaluated its performance. During injection molding, signals of the injection start, V/P switchover, and packing end sections were obtained through the measurement of the mold vibration and the injection time and packing time were calculated by using the difference between the times of the sections. Then, the mold closed and mold open signals were obtained using a magnetic hall sensor, and cycle time was calculated by using the time difference between the mold closed time each process. As a result of evaluating the performance by comparing the process data monitored by the edge device with the shot data recorded on the injection molding machine, the cycle time, injection time, and packing time showed very small error of 0.70±0.38%, 1.40±1.17%, and 0.69±0.82%, respectively, and the values close to the actual were monitored and the accuracy and reliability of the edge device were confirmed. In addition, it was confirmed that the mold surface temperature measured by the edge device was similar to the actual mold surface temperature.

  • In this work, we fabricated oxide on an n-type silicon substrate through local anodic oxidation (LAO) using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The resulting oxide thickness was measured and its correlation with load force, scan speed and applied voltage was analyzed. The surface oxide layer was stripped using a buffered oxide etch. Ohmic contacts were created by applying silver paste on the silicon substrate back face. LAO was performed at approximately 70% humidity. The oxide thickness increased with increasing the load force, the voltage, and reducing the scan speed. We confirmed that LAO/AFM can be used to create both lateral and, to some extent, vertical shapes and patterns, as previously shown in the literature.

  • The purpose of this study is to reduce seismic responses of an actual nuclear piping system using a tuned mass damper (TMD) device. A numerical piping model was developed and validated based on shaking table test results with actual nuclear piping. A TMD for nuclear piping was newly devised in this work. A TMD shape design suitable for nuclear piping systems was conducted, and its operating performance was verified after manufacturing. The response reduction performance of the developed TMD under earthquake loading on actual piping was investigated. Results confirmed that, on average, seismic response reduction rates of 34% in the maximum acceleration response, 41% in the root mean square acceleration response, and 57% in the spectral acceleration response were shown through the TMD application. This developed TMD operated successfully within the seismic response reduction rate of existing TMD optimum design values. Therefore, the developed TMD and dynamic interpretation help improve the nuclear piping's seismic performance.

  • Grant-free random access (GFRA) can reduce the access delay and signaling cost, and satisfy the short transmission packet and strict delay constraints requirement in internet of things (IoT). IoT is a major trend in the future, which is characterized by the variety of applications and devices. However, most existing studies on GFRA only consider a single type of device and omit the effect of access delay. In this paper, we study GFRA in multicell massive multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) systems where different types of devices with various configurations and requirements co-exist. By introducing the backoff mechanism, each device is randomly activated according to the backoff parameter, and active devices randomly select an orthogonal pilot sequence from a predefined pilot pool. An analytical approximation of the average spectral efficiency for each type of device is derived. Based on it, we obtain the optimal backoff parameter for each type of devices under their delay constraints. It is found that the optimal backoff parameters are closely related to the device number and delay constraint. In general, devices that have larger quantity should have more backoff time before they are allowed to access. However, as the delay constraint become stricter, the required backoff time reduces gradually, and the device with larger quantity may have less backoff time than that with smaller quantity when its delay constraint is extremely strict. When the pilot length is short, the effect of delay constraints mentioned above works more obviously.

  • A simple analytical expression for a current gain of IGBT is derived in terms of the device parameters as well as a gate length dependent parameter, which allows for the determination of the current components of the device as a function of its gate length. The analytical results are compared with those from simulation results. A good agreement is found.

  • A passive power converter operating on the principle of parametric excitation, called Parametric transformer, is analyzed. The energy transfer from the input to the output is achieved through the double frequency variation of magnetic path reluctance to the input frequency without mutual flux coupling between two windings. Thus, output becomes available which is essentially independant of waveform of excitation. The mathmatical model of the device is developed and its solution is obtained. The outstanding characteristics of the device is explained from the analysis.
