The synthesis of copolymers containing thiophene and benzimidazole unit by Stille polymerization is reported. The polymers with many unsubstituted thiophene units in the backbone have been reported to show low solubility, which has been a problem for spin-coating for the device fabrication. In dihexyl-2H-benzimidazole, the sulfur at 2-position of BT unit was replaced with dialkyl substituted carbon, while keeping the 1,2-quinoid form, to improve the solubility of the polymers. The PL emission spectra of the PHBIT1, PHBIT2 and PHBIT3 in chloroform solutions show maximum peaks at 500~561 nm. In thin films, maximum peaks of the PHBITs appeared at 529, 562 and 569 nm, respectively. The EL emission maxima of the PHBIT1 and PHBIT2 appear at around 588 and 576 nm, respectively. The current density and maximum luminescence of the LED with the configuration of ITO/PEDOT/ PHBIT2/Ca/Al are 552 mA/$cm^2$ and 46 cd/$m^2$, respectively.
To study encapsulation method for large-area organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), red emitting OLEDs were fabricated, on which $Alq_3$ as organic buffer layer and LiF and Al as inorganic protective layers were deposited to protect the damage of OLED by epoxy. And then the OLEDs were attached to flat glass by printing method using epoxy. The basic structure of OLED doped with rubrene of 1 vol.% as emitting layer is ITO(150 nm) / 2-TNATA(50 nm) / ${\alpha}$-NPD(30 nm) / $Alq_3$:Rubrene(30 nm) / $Alq_3$(30 nm) / LiF(0.7 nm) / Al(100 nm). In case of depositing $Alq_3$, LiF and Al and then attaching of flat glass onto OLED, current density, luminance, efficiency and driving voltage were not changed and lifetime was increased according to thickness of Al as inorganic protective layers. The lifetime of OLED/$Alq_3$/LiF/Al_4/glass structure was 139 hours increased by 15.8 times more than bare OLED of 8.8 hours and 1.6 times more than edge sealed OLED of 54.5 hours.
Alkoxy-substituted poly(spirobifluorene)s and their copolymers with a triphenylamine derivative have been synthesized by Ni(0)-mediated polymerization. The polymers were well soluble in common organic solvents. Pure blue-light emissions without the long wavelength emission of poly(fluorene)s have been observed in the fluorescence spectra of polymer thin films. The light emitting diodes with a device configuration of ITO/PEDT:PSS(30 nm)/polymer(60 nm)/LiF(1 nm)/Al(100 nm) have been fabricated. The electroluminescence spectra showed the blue emissions without the long wavelength emission as observed in the fluorescence spectra. The relatively poor electroluminescence quantum yield of the homopolymer (0.017% @ 20 $mA/cm^{2}$) with color coordinates of (0.16, 0.07) has been improved by the introduction of triphenylamine moiety, and the copolymer with derivative exhibited an electroluminescence quantum yield of 0.15 % at 20 $mA/cm^{2}$ with color coordinates of (0.16, 0.08). Moreover, the introduction of polar side chains to the spirobifluorene moiety enhanced the device performance and led to the quantum yields of 0.6 to 0.7 % at 20 $mA/cm^{2}$, although there was some expense of color purities.
Effects of thin ZnO/Mg interlayers on electrical and optical properties between p-GaN and ITO were characterized for its application to GaN-LEDs. The ZnO and Mg layers were deposited to have various thicknesses (1${\sim}$6nm for ZnO and 1${\sim}$2nm for Mg) by sputtering. After RTA process, the atomic migration between Mg and ZnO and the formation of Ga vacancy were observed from SIMS depth profile, resulting in the increase of hole concentration and the reduction of band bending at the surface region of p-GaN. The sample using ZnO(2nm)/Mg(2nm) interlayer produced the lowest contact resistance with SBH(Schottky barrier height) of 0.576 eV and the transmittance higher than 83% at a wavelength of 460nm when annealed at 500$^{\circ}C$ for 3min in air ambient.
Electroluminescence(EL) devices based on organic thin films have attracted lots of interests in large-area light-emitting display. Recently, many EL researcher have interested a new emissive organic material. In this study, light-emitting organic electroluminescent devices were fabricated using Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) technique with new emissive organic material. This new emissive organic material were synthesis by our teams and we called PECCP [poly(3,6-N-2ethylhexyl carbazoly cyanoterephthalidene)] which has strong electron donor group and electron acceptor group in main chain repeat unit. This material has good solubility in common organic solvent such as chloroform. THF, etc. and has a good stability in air. In here, the new emissive material is applied to Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) method because our new material has a good stability in air. Optimum conditions of film deposition were examined by a surface pressure-area( $\pi$ -A) isotherms with various factors. The LB film were deposited on a indium Tin Oxide(ITO) glass. We were investigated by measuring current-voltage(I-V) characteristics. Also we were measured the UV/visible absorption at about 410nm and PL spectrum at about 530nm. We are attempt to the electroluminescence device properties of the new emissive material by Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) technique.
OLEDs based on organic thin films are similar to semiconductor base light-emitting diodes in that they were also considered to be one of the next generation flat-panel displays. They are attractive because of low-operating voltage, low power consumption, ease of fabrication, and low cost. In this study, we used poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly (4-styrenesulfonate) (PE DOT : PSS) as a hole injection layer. In this experiment spin coating method was used with various speed rate. The fundamental structure of the OLEDs was ITO/PEDOT:PSS/NPB/$Alq_3$/Al. As a result, we obtained the enhancement performance of OLEDs when the spin coating speed was 4000 rpm. We obtained a maximum luminance of 24334 $cd/m^2$ at a current density of 967 $mA/cm^2$.
Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets were patterned with poly[benzodithiophene-bis(decyltetradecyl-thien) naphthothiadiazole] (PBDT-DTNT) and poly[bis(triiso-propylsilylethynyl) benzodithiophene-bis(decyltetradecyl-thien) naphthobisthiadiazole] (PBDT-TIPS-DTNT-DT) and used in photovoltaics. Conductive patternings changed via surface modification of rGO; because polymers encountered a high hindrance while assembling onto grafted rGO. The best records were detected in indium tin oxide (ITO):poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS):PBDTDTNT/rGO:PBDT-DTNT:LiF:Al devices, i.e., short current density $(J_{sc})=11.18mA/cm^2$, open circuit voltage $(V_{oc})=0.67V$, fill factor (FF) = 62% and power conversion efficiency (PCE) = 4.64%. PCE increased 2.31 folds after incorporation of PBDT-DTNT into thin films. Larger polymer assemblies on bared-rGO nanosheets resulted in greater phase separations.
Despite recent efforts for fabricating flexible transparent conducting films (TCFs) with low resistance and high transmittance, several obstacles to meet the requirement of flexible displays still remain. Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films, which have been traditionally used as the TCFs, have a serious obstacle in TCFs applications. SWNTs are the most appropriate materials for conductive films for displays due to their excellent high mechanical strength and electrical conductivity. Recently, it has been demonstrated that acid treatment is an efficient method for surfactant removal. However, the treatment has been reported to destroy most SWNT. In this work, the fabrication by the spraying process of transparent SWNT films and reduction of its sheet resistance by Au-ionic doping treatment on PET substrates is researched. Arc-discharge SWNTs were dispersed in deionized water by adding sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as surfactant and sonicated, followed by the centrifugation. The dispersed SWNT was spray-coated on PET substrate and dried on a hotplate. When the spray process was terminated, the TCF was immersed into deionized water to remove the surfactant and then it was dried on hotplate. The TCF film was then was doped with Au-ionic doping treatment, rinsed with deionized water and dried. The surface morphology of TCF was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy. The sheet resistance and optical transmission properties of the TCF were measured with a four-point probe method and a UV-visible spectrometry, respectively. This was confirmed and discussed on the XPS and UPS studies. We show that 87 ${\Omega}/{\Box}$ sheet resistances with 81% transmittance at the wavelength of 550 nm. The changes in electrical and optical conductivity of SWNT film before and after Au-ionic doping treatments were discussed. The effects of hole transport interface layer using Au-ionic doping SWNT on the performance of organic solar cells were investigated.
