This study was conducted to provide basic data of Cirsium setidens Nakai in different harvest time that will be applied for development of functional foods and ingredients. We investigated pectiolinarin and pectolinarigenin content, total flavonoids content and antioxidant effects (DPPH radical scavenging activity and ORAC assay) of C. setidens Nakai. Our results showed that the pectolinarin and total flavonoids contents of C. setidens Nakai in harvesting time ranged from $43.13{\pm}0.22$ to $95.65{\pm}0.34mg/g$ and from $32.81{\pm}1.68$ to $40.43{\pm}0.35mg$ rutin equivalent (RE)/g, respectively. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of C. setidens Nakai did not show differences in harvesting time. The oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) value was highest in August (2016) extracts ($827.72{\mu}mole\;TE/g$). In addition, C. setidens Nakai exthanolic extract in harvesting time did not show any cytotoxicity up to $200{\mu}g/mL$. During adipocyte differentiation, C. setidens Nakai extract in harvesting time significantly inhibited lipid accumulation and ROS production, compared with the controls. These results suggest that C. setidens Nakai extract could be considered as a non-toxic natural resources of functional food ingredients and natural antioxidants.

Background: Smoking cessation is the most powerful intervention to modify progress of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and nicotine dependence is one of the most important determinants of success or failure in smoking cessation. We evaluated nicotine dependence status and investigated factors associated with moderate to high nicotine dependence in patients with COPD. Methods: We included 53 current smokers with COPD in the Korean Obstructive Lung Disease II cohort enrolled between January 2014 and March 2016. Nicotine dependence was measured by using Fagerstrom test for nicotine dependence (FTND). Cognitive function was assessed by Korean version of Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Results: The median FTND score was 3, and 32 patients (60%) had moderate to high nicotine dependence. The median smoking amount was 44 pack-years, which was not related to nicotine dependence. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that high education status (odds ratio, 1.286; 95% confidence interval, 1.036-1.596; p=0.023), age <70 (odds ratio, 6.407; 95% confidence interval, 1.376-29.830; p=0.018), and mild to moderate airflow obstruction (odds ratio, 6.969; 95% confidence interval, 1.388-34.998; p=0.018) were related to moderate to high nicotine dependence. Conclusion: Nicotine dependence does not correlate with smoking amount, but with education level, age, and severity of airflow obstruction. Physicians should provide different strategies of smoking cessation intervention for current smokers with COPD according to their education levels, age, and severity of airflow obstruction.

The effects of hot air dried tomato powder on the physicochemical and sensory properties of meat patties were studied. The control(C, no addition) and 4 treatments with addition of hot air dried tomato powder(T1, 0.25; T2, 0.50; T3, 0.75; and T4, 1.00%) were prepared and stored for 7 days at 5℃. The pH values of T4 were significantly lower(p<0.05) than those of control and other treatments during initial storage, however, the pH values of T4 were higher(p<0.05) at 7 days of storage. The cooking loss was not significantly different between control and all treatments. The 2-thiobarbituric reactive substances (TBARS) of meat patties containing hot air dried tomato powder were significantly lower(p<0.05) compared to those for control during the whole storage. The volatile basic nitrogen(VBN) values of T2 increased(p<0.05) significantly as the storage period increased, but there was no difference in VBN between control and the other treatments(T1, T3, T4). In meat color, L*, a* and b* of meat patties containing hot air dried tomato powder showed slightly higher (p>0.05) than that of control. a* and b* of T4 were the highest(p<0.05) among the all products. Total plate counts(TPC) increased(p<0.05) significantly as the storage period increased. The result of TPC showed the range of 5.48(T2)~6.98(C) log CFU/g at the 7 day of storage. Sensory panels evaluated that pork patties containing hot air dried tomato powder had the slightly higher score in overall acceptability.
This study was conducted to determine the effect of different proportions of Alaska pollack surimi, chicken breast surimi and starch on textural properties of sausage. Sausage were manufactured such as Alaska pollack surimi(control), T1(90.91:0:9.09), T2(80:0:20), T3(62.5:37.5:0), T4(58.82:35.3:5.88), T5 (40:60:0) and T6(36.36:54.55:9.09) depending on different proportions of Alaska pollack surimi, chicken breast surimi and starch. Brittleness, breaking force and gel strength were significantly higher in T1 than the control(P<0.05), and breaking force, gel strength and folding test were significantly higher but sensory evaluation was significantly lower in T2 than the control(P<0.05). Breaking force, gel strength and jelly strength were significantly higher in T3 and T4 than the control(P<0.05). Gel characteristics and sensory scores were significantly higher but texture properties were significantly lower in T5 and T6 than the control(P<0.05). The T3 and T4 had similar textural and sensory properties in the surimi- sausage compared to the control. Therefore, the results of this study indicated that textural properties of sausage can be acceptable when chicken breast surimi replaced Alaska pollack up to 35%.

This study investigated and evaluated contamination levels of bacteria on tomatoes at farms stage to evaluate potential hazards associated with fresh tomatoes. A total of 170 samples, 90 samples from 5 sampling sites from 18 farms and 80 samples from 1 sampling site from 4 farms every month for four months, were analyzed to enumerate aerobic bacterial counts, coliforms, E. coli, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp., and Listeria monocytogenes. Aerobic bacterial counts ranged from 0.48 to 6.15 Log CFU/g, with the lowest and the highest bacterial cell counts recorded for A site and E site, respectively. Thirty five percent of the samples from the E site contained more than 2 Log CFU/g. Six samples (6.6%) of 90 samples contained B. cereus less than 1 Log CFU/g. In addition, the contamination level of indicator bacteria and B. cereus in tomatoes were higher on March than on April, May and June (P < 0.05). S. aureus, E. coli, E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp. and L. monocytogenes were not detected in the tomato samples. The microbial contamination levels of tomatoes determined in this study may be used as the data for microbiological risk assessment.
Background: Although airway obstruction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is due to pathologic processes in both the airways and the lung parenchyma, the contribution of these processes, as well as other factors, have not yet been evaluated quantitatively. We therefore quantitatively evaluated the factors contributing to airflow limitation in patients with COPD. Methods: The 213 COPD patients were aged >45 years, had smoked >10 pack-years of cigarettes, and had a post-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in one second ($FEV_1$)/forced vital capacity (FVC) <0.7. All patients were evaluated by medical interviews, physical examination, spirometry, bronchodilator reversibility tests, lung volume, and 6-minute walk tests. In addition, volumetric computed tomography (CT) was performed to evaluate airway wall thickness, emphysema severity, and mean lung density ratio at full expiration and inspiration. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to identify the variables independently associated with $FEV_1$ - the index of the severity of airflow limitation. Results: Multiple linear regression analysis showed that CT measurements of mean lung density ratio (standardized coefficient ${\beta}$=-0.46; p<0.001), emphysema severity (volume fraction of the lung less than -950 HU at full inspiration; ${\beta}$=-0.24; p<0.001), and airway wall thickness (mean wall area %; ${\beta}$=-0.19, p=0.001), as well as current smoking status (${\beta}$=-0.14; p=0.009) were independent contributors to $FEV_1$. Conclusion: Mean lung density ratio, emphysema severity, and airway wall thickness evaluated by volumetric CT and smoking status could independently contribute to the severity of airflow limitation in patients with COPD.

Dose distribution throughout the clinical organ range of motion was analyzed using a respiratory-motion simulator that was equipped with a polymer gel dosimeter and EBT2 film. The normoxic polymer gel dosimeter was synthesized from gelatin, MAA, HQ, THPC and HPLC. The gel dosimeter and EBT2 film were irradiated with Co-60 gamma rays that were moved along the x-axis and y-axis in ${\pm}1.5cm$ steps at five-second intervals. The field size was $5{\times}5cm^2$. The SSD was 80 cm and set to 10 Gy at a depth of 2 cm. The PDD at a depth of 50 mm was 75.2% in the ion chamber, 82.3% in the static state and 86.1% in the dynamic state in the gel dosimeter. The penumbra for the dynamic state target, which was measured using the gel dosimeter, averaged 10.89 mm, this is a 40.5% increase over the penumbra of the static state target of 7.74 mm. In addition, when measuring with gel dosimetry, the value for the penumbra is 36.6% smaller in the static state and 29.4% smaller in the dynamic state compared to measuring with film. The aim of this study was to investigate the dosimetric properties of a normoxic polymethacrylic acid gel dosimeter in static and dynamic states and to evaluate the potentiality as a relative dosimeter for dynamic therapeutic radiation.
Purpose: The present study was conducted to analyze any difference in the movement of aspheric RGP lens by the amounts of keratometiric astigmatisms using keratometer and corneal topography. Methods: Corneal curvatures in thirty six eyes of males and females of with-the-rule keratometric astigmatisms in their twenties were measured by a keratometer and worn aspheric RGP lenses. Then, lens rotations, vertical and horizontal movements of lens by blinking were measured to compare with lens movements when aspheric RGP lenses were fitted by total keratometric astigmatisms using corneal topography. Results: The case having higher amount of central keratometric astigmatism was 61.1% of subjects, however, 36.1% of subjects showed higher total keratometric astigmatism indicating that central keratometric astigmatism was not always bigger than total keratometric astigmatism. Since over 0.25 diopter difference between total and central keratometric astigmatisms was shown in 19 eyes (52.8% of subjects), the prescription for lens fitting could be changed. Significant difference in horizontal movement was detected with increase of astigmatism when it compared based on the amount of keratometric astigmatism measured by a keratometer. However, there was no significant difference in lens rotation, horizontal and vertical movements by comparison with the amount of total keratometric astigmatism using a corneal topography. When central keratometric astigmatism measured by keratometer was bigger than total keratometric astigmatism estimated by corneal topography, bigger lens rotation was shown compared with opposite case. Also, the tendency of bigger lens rotation was measured with the increase of keratomatric astigmatism in the case of same prescription having same base curves with same amount of keratometric astigmatism but different curvatures. Conclusions: From the present study, we concluded that lens movements on cornea were not totally different when aspheric RGP lens fitted on with-the-rule astigmatism by keratometer and corneal topography. However, there was some difference in certain lens movements. Therefore, we concluded that further study on the relationship between the prescriptions for lens fitting should be conducted for improving the rate of successful lens fitting by keratometer or for the proper application of corneal topography for lens fitting.
