Solid-state synthesis of yttrium oxyfluoride powders and their application to plasma spray coating (옥시불화이트륨 분말의 고상합성 및 플라즈마 스프레이 코팅 적용)

  • In order to manufacture a semiconductor circuit, etching, cleaning, and deposition processes are repeated. During these processes, the inside of the processing chamber is exposed to corrosive plasma. Therefore, the coating of the inner wall of the semiconductor equipment with a plasma-resistant material has been attempted to minimize the etching of the coating and particle contaminant generation. In this study, we synthesized yttrium oxyfluoride (YOF) powder by a solid-state reaction using Y2O3 and YF3 as raw materials. Mixing ratio of the Y2O3 and YF3 was varied from 1.0:1.0 to 1.0:1.6. Effects of the mixing ratio on crystal structure and microstructure of the synthesized YOF powder were investigated using XRD and FE-SEM. The synthesized YOF powder was successfully applied to plasma spray coating process on Al substrate.

Optical properties of (CexLu1-x)3MgAl3SiO12 yellow phosphor ((CexLu1-x)3MgAl3SiO12 황색 형광체의 광학적 특성)

  • A novel $Ce^{3+}$ doped $(Ce_xLu_{1-x})_3MgAl_3SiO_{12}$ phosphor was successfully synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction. Heat-treatment temperature was controlled from 1250 to $1550^{\circ}C$ for 5 h. XRD and PL properties were analyzed for the optimum heat-treatment condition. Ce doping concentration was varied from 2.0 to 10.0 mol% for the optimum Ce doping concentration. The PL intensity, peak wavelength and FWHM were calculated with the Ce doping concentration, and evaluated for the application to LED packaging. Particle size and morphology were also characterized for synthesized phosphor sample at optimum heat-temperature and Ce doping concentration.

Carpinus turczaninowii extract modulates arterial inflammatory response: a potential therapeutic use for atherosclerosis

  • BACKGOURND/OBJECTIVES: Vascular inflammation is an important feature in the atherosclerotic process. Recent studies report that leaves and branches of Carpinus turczaninowii (C. turczaninowii) have antioxidant capacity and exert anti-inflammatory effects. However, no study has reported the regulatory effect of C. turczaninowii extract on the arterial inflammatory response. This study therefore investigated modulation of the arterial inflammatory response after exposure to C. turczaninowii extract, using human aortic vascular smooth muscle cells (HAoSMCs). MATERIALS/METHODS: Scavenging activity of free radicals, total phenolic content (TPC), cell viability, mRNA expressions, and secreted levels of cytokines were measured in LPS-stimulated (10 ng/mL) HAoSMCs treated with the C. turczaninowii extract. RESULTS: C. turczaninowii extract contains high amounts of TPC ($225.6{\pm}21.0mg$ of gallic acid equivalents/g of the extract), as well as exerts time-and dose-dependent increases in strongly scavenged free radicals (average $14.8{\pm}1.97{\mu}g/mL$ $IC_{50}$ at 40 min). Cell viabilities after exposure to the extracts (1 and $10{\mu}g/mL$) were similar to the viability of non-treated cells. Cytokine mRNA expressions were significantly suppressed by the extracts (1 and $10{\mu}g/mL$) at 6 hours (h) after exposure. Interleukin-6 secretion was dose-dependently suppressed 2 h after incubation with the extract, at $1-10{\mu}g/mL$ in non-stimulated cells, and at 5 and $10{\mu}g/mL$ in LPS-stimulated cells. Similar patterns were also observed at 24 h after incubation with the extract (at $1-10{\mu}g/mL$ in non-stimulated cells, and at $10{\mu}g/mL$ in the LPS-stimulated cells). Soluble intracellular vascular adhesion molecules (sICAM-1) secreted from non-stimulated cells and LPS-stimulated cells were similarly suppressed in a dose-dependent manner after 24 h exposure to the extracts, but not after 2 h. In addition, sICAM-1 concentration after 24 h treatment was positively related to IL-6 levels after 2 h and 24 h exposure (r = 0.418, P = 0.003, and r = 0.524, P < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that C. turczaninowii modulates the arterial inflammatory response, and indicates the potential to be applied as a therapeutic use for atherosclerosis.

Anti-inflammatory Activities of Antimicrobial Peptide Locustacin Derived from Locusta migratoria in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 Cells (풀무치 유래 항균 펩타이드 locustacin의 항염증 활성)

  • Locusta migratoria is a widespread locust species in many parts of the world and is considered an alternative source for the production of protein for value-added ingredients. We previously identified putative antimicrobial peptides derived from L. migratoria through an in silico analysis of its transcriptome. However, its anti-inflammatory effect has not been studied. In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory activities of the antimicrobial peptide locustacin (KTHILSFFPSFLPLFLKK-NH2) derived from L. migratoria on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophage cells. Locustacin (50, 100, and 200 ㎍/ml) significantly reduced the production of nitric oxide (NO) in LPS-stimulated macrophages without any cytotoxicity. Locustacin also inhibited the mRNA and protein expression of pro-inflammatory mediators, such as inducible NO synthase and cyclooxygenase-2, in contrast to the presence of LPS alone. Locustacin decreased the release of LPS-induced pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1β, and their gene expression in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, locustacin (100 and/or 200 ㎍/ml) inhibited phosphorylation levels of extracellular signal regulated kinase, p38, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase. Locustacin also suppressed the degradation of inhibitory kappa B alpha, which was considered to be an inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB). Collectively, these results demonstrate that locustacin can exert anti-inflammatory effects through the inhibition of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) phosphorylation, activation of NF-κB, and downstream inflammatory mediators in LPS-stimulated macrophage cells.

Effect of Gamma-Irradiation on Trans Fatty Acid, Free Amino Acid and Sensory Evaluation of Dry-fermented Sausage (감마선 조사가 건조-발효소시지의 Trans 지방산, 유리아미노산 및 관능검사 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, the effects of gamma-irradiation (1, 2 and 4 kGy) on texture profiles, fatty acid composition, free amino acids and sensory evaluation of dry-fermented sausage were evaluated. The hardness and adhesiveness of irradiated samples were significantly lower (p<0.01) than that of the control, while the gumminess of samples irradiated with 2 and 4 kGy was higher than the other tested samples (p<0.01). The sample irradiated at 4 kGy had a higher saturated fatty acid (SFA) content (C14:0, C16:0, C18:0) and significantly lower (p<0.05) unsaturated fatty acid content (UFA) (C16:1, C18:1, C18:3), trans, n-3 and n-6 fatty acid than the non-irradiated sample. Gamma-irradiation resulted in an increase (p<0.05) in phosposerine, aspartic acid and glutamic acid and a decrease (p<0.05) in glutamic acid in free amino acids. For the samples irradiated at 4 kGy, the sulfur odor and fat pungent flavor were significantly higher (p<0.05) and the moldy odor and moldy flavor were significantly lower than the control sample. In conclusion, gamma-irradiation had a significant effect on the texture profiles, fatty acid composition and sensory evaluation of dry-fermented sausage.

Determination of Sulfur Dioxide in Pickles by Acid Distillation-HPLC Method and Monnier Williams Modified Method (산증류-HPLC법과 모니어윌리암스변법을 이용한 절임류중의 이산화황 함량 분석)

  • To assess accurate methods for measuring sulfur dioxide residue in pickles, the acid distillation HPLC-UV method and Monnier Willams modified method were examined. By the acid distillation HPLC-UV method, sulfites released from pickles by acid distillation were absorbed in 1% triethanolamine solution and detected as sulfite ion by HPLC with UV monitoring at 240nm. An anion exchange column was employed with 1.8mM $Ma_2CO_3-1.7mM\;NaHCO_3$ solution as a mobile phase, $84.0{\sim}91.7%$ of sulfite added to pickled radish were recovered. Total sulfite levels from 48 kinds of pickles analyzed by acid distillation HPLC-UV was compared with those analyzed by the Monnier Williams modified method. The Monnier Williams modified method showed higher levels of sulfur dioxide than the acid distillation HPLC-UV method due to the presence of volatile acids in pickles. The concentration of sulfur dioxide was in the range of $N.D{\sim}173.05ppm$ in pickled radish and over 30ppm of sulfur dioxide from 3 samples by the acid distillation-HPLC-UV method.

Anti-Proliferation Effects of Decursin from Angelica gigas Nakai in the MCF-7 Cells Treated with Environmental Hormones (환경호르몬에 의해 유도된 인체 유방암세포의 증식에 대한 당귀로부터 분리한 Decursin 억제효과)

  • Anti-proliferation effects of decursin from Angelica gigas Nakai were investigated in the MCF-7 cells treated with environmental hormones. The proliferation was decreased in a dose-dependent manner at the concentration over 20 ${\mu}g/mL$ in the MCF-7 cells treated with decursin of various concentrations. The environmental hormones such as $17{\beta}$-estradiol and bisphenol increased the growth of MCF-7 cells in the charcoal-treated FBS (cFBS) medium and the proliferation was the highest at 0.1 ${\mu}M$ among the tested hormone concentration. Decursin was predicted to inhibit the proliferation in a dose-dependent fashion at tested concentrations (1, 3, 10 or 30 ${\mu}g/mL$) in the MCF-7 cells added environmental hormones; however, the survival rate of the cells was lower than that of control cells that were not treated with decursin at 30 ${\mu}g/mL$ concentration. The chromatin condensation and apoptotic body were examined in the decursin treated cells cultured with the cFBS medium added environmental hormones. These results suggest that decursin decreased the proliferation through apoptosis in the MCF-7 cells added environmental hormones.

Biological Activities of Methanol Extract of Angelica gigas Nakai (참당귀 Methanol 추출물의 생리활성)

  • The biological activities of methanol extracts of Angelica gigas Nakai, such as antioxidation, anticancer and immuno-activity, were investigated in relation to development of functional foods. Anti-oxidation activity in the methanol extracts were assessed by hydrogen donating activity, reducing power and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity. Activities were dose-dependent over concentrations of 0.1, 0.5 and 1 mg/mL, with thehydrogen donating activity being over 50% at 1 mg/mL concentration. The methanol extracts inhibited the proliferation of SW480 cells in a dose-dependent manner, and chromatin condensation and apoptotic bodies were observed by fluorescence microcopy in the cells treated with the extracts for 24 hr. Caspase-3 activity was also increased in a dose-dependent manner in cells treated with the extracts relative to control cells. The extracts did not induce the proliferation of mouse spleen cells or NO production in macrophage cells (RAW 264.7). These results show that the methanol extract had slight anti-oxidative activity and did not increase immuno-activity, but inhibited proliferation of SW480 through apoptosis via a caspase dependent pathway.

Pork Quality Traits According to Postmortem pH and Temperature in Berkshire

  • This study was performed to investigate the role of pH and temperature postmortem, and to demonstrate the importance of these factors in determining meat quality. Postmortem pH45min (pH at 45 min postmortem or initial pH) via analysis of Pearson’s correlation showed high positive correlation with pH change pHc24 (pH change from pH45min to pH24h postmortem). However, postmortem pH after 24 h (pH24h or ultimate pH) had a high negative correlation with pH change, pHc24, CIE L*, and protein content. Initial temperature postmortem (T1h ) was positively associated with a change in temperature from 45 min to 24 h postmortem (Tc24) and cooking loss, but negatively correlated with water holding capacity. Temperature at 24 h postmortem (T24h) was negatively associated with Tc24. Collectively, these results indicate that higher initial pH was associated with higher pHc24, T1h, and Tc24. However, higher initial pH was associated with a reduction in carcass weight, backfat thickness, CIE a* and b*, water holding capacity, collagen and fat content, drip loss, and cooking loss as well as decreased shear force. In contrast, CIE a* and b*, drip loss, cooking loss, and shear force in higher ultimate pH was showed by a similar pattern to higher initial pH, whereas pHc24, carcass weight, backfat thickness, water holding capacity, fat content, moisture content, protein content, T1h, T24h, and Tc24 were exhibited by completely differential patterns (p<0.05). Therefore, we suggest that initial pH, ultimate pH, and temperatures postmortem are important factors in determining the meat quality of pork.

Effect of Ureas on the Conformational Properties of Poly(ethylene oxide) in Aqueous Solutions by Viscometry (수용액에서 점도계법에 의한 폴리에틸렌 옥사이드의 구조성질에 대한 요소 용질들의 효과)

  • The conformational properties of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in aqueous solutions are studied by viscometry with respect to the water structure perturbing capabilities of a series of urea solutes at $16^{\circ}C$, and experiments for the effect of amounts of urea and methylurea on PEO at 16 and $25^{\circ}C$ are also performed. The results show that the chain expansion, by ureas, of PEO of $1.0{\times}10^5$ molecular weight at $16^{\circ}C$ is similar to that of PEO of $8.0{\times}10^3$ molecular weight at $25^{\circ}C$ with respect to the water structure perturbation. Urea and methylurea make the PEO chain expand by the perturbation of water structure around PEO and by the hydrophobic interaction between methylurea and PEO, respectively. PEO of $1.0{\times}10^5$ molecular weight has hydrophobic sites on it, which are roughly classified into two parts; one is the inner hydrophobic groups which can interact between themselves (intramolecular hydrophobic interaction) and prevails at $16^{\circ}C$, and the other is the outer, exposed hydrophobic groups which can interact with the added hydrophobic solute (intermolecular hydrophobic interaction) and prevails at $25^{\circ}C.$
