In this letter, the problem of estimating the physical layer (PL) scrambling code sequence of DVB-S2 is studied. We present the first ever scheme to estimate the scrambling sequence. The scheme is based on hypothesis testing. By analyzing the PL scrambling process, we construct a new sequence equivalent to the scrambling sequence. We then use hypothesis testing to estimate the new sequence. The threshold for the hypothesis testing is also discussed. The experiment results show that the performance of our estimation scheme can work even under high BER.

It is well known that duty-cycling control by dynamically adjusting the polling interval according to the traffic loads can effectively achieve power saving in wireless sensor networks. Thus, there has been a significant research effort in developing polling interval adaptation schemes. Especially, Dynamic Low Power Listening (DLPL) scheme is one of the most widely adopted open-looping polling interval adaptation techniques in wireless sensor networks. In DLPL scheme, if consecutive idle (busy) samplings reach a given fixed threshold, the polling interval is increased (decreased). However, due to the trial-and-error based approach, it may significantly deteriorate the system performance depending on given threshold parameters. In this paper, we propose a novel DLPL scheme, called SDL (Sequential hypothesis testing based Dynamic LPL), which employs sequential hypothesis testing to decide whether to change the polling interval conforming to various traffic conditions. Simulation results show that SDL achieves substantial power saving over state-of-the-art DLPL schemes.

This article deals with the problem of multiple hypothesis testing for the shape parameter in the generalized exponential distribution. We propose Bayesian hypothesis testing procedures for multiple hypotheses of the shape parameter with the noninformative prior. The Bayes factor with the noninformative prior is not well defined. The reason is that the most of the noninformative prior can be improper. Therefore we study the default Bayesian multiple hypothesis testing methods using the fractional and intrinsic Bayes factors with the reference priors. Simulation study is performed and an example is given.

An experimental method denoted as Impulse Method is proposed as a cost-effective non-destructive technique for the on-site evaluation of concrete elastic modulus in existing structures: on the basis of Hertz's quasi-static theory of elastic impact and with the aid of a simple portable testing equipment, it makes it possible to collect series of local measurements of the elastic modulus in an easy way and in a very short time. A Hypothesis Testing procedure is developed in order to provide a statistical tool for processing the data collected by means of the Impulse Method and assessing the possible occurrence of significant variations in the elastic modulus without exceeding some prescribed error probabilities. It is based on a particular formulation of the renowned sequential probability ratio test and reveals to be optimal with respect to the error probabilities and the required number of observations, thus further improving the time-effectiveness of the Impulse Method. The results of an experimental investigation on different types of plain concrete prove the validity of the Impulse Method in estimating the unknown value of the elastic modulus and attest the effectiveness of the proposed Hypothesis Testing procedure in identifying significant variations in the elastic modulus.
This paper aims to propose a new steps of hypothesis testing using analysis process and improvement process in the six sigma DMAIC. The six sigma implementation models proposed in this paper consist of six steps. The first step is to establish a research hypothesis by specification directionality and FBP(Falsibility By Popper). The second step is to translate the research hypothesis such as RHAT(Research Hypothesis Absent Type) and RHPT(Research Hypothesis Present Type) into statistical hypothesis such as $H_0$(Null Hypothesis) and $H_1$(Alternative Hypothesis). The third step is to implement statistical hypothesis testing by PBC(Proof By Contradiction) and proper sample size. The fourth step is to interpret the result of statistical hypothesis test. The fifth step is to establish the best conditions of product and process conditions by experimental optimization and interval estimation. The sixth step is to draw a conclusion by considering practical significance and statistical significance. Important for both quality practitioners and academicians, case analysis on six sigma projects with implementation guidelines are provided.

We propose some properties of fuzzy p-value and fuzzy significance level to the test statistics for the fuzzy hypotheses testing. Appling the principle of agreement index, we suggest two method for fuzzy hypothesis testing by fuzzy rejection region and fuzzy p-value with fuzzy hypothesis $H_{f,0}$.

This article deals with the problem of testing the equality of the scale parameters in nonregular Pareto distributions. We propose Bayesian hypothesis testing procedures for the equality of the scale parameters under the noninformative prior. The noninformative prior is usually improper which yields a calibration problem that makes the Bayes factor to be de ned up to a multiplicative constant. So we propose the default Bayesia hypothesis testing procedures based on the fractional Bayes factor and the intrinsic Bayes factors under the reference priors. Simulation study and a real data example are provided.

The present study investigated Korean and the US college students' scientific reasoning skills involving hypothesis-testing skills and tested the hypothesis that hypothesis-testing skills are more advanced ones than other scientific reasoning skills investigated in this study. Seven hundred and seventy-four(774) Korean and five hundred and sixty-eight(568) the US students were sampled in university level. The Test of Scientific Reasoning was used as a scientific reasoning test. The test is consisted of two conservational reasoning, two proportional reasoning, one pendulum, two probability reasoning, two controlling variable, one correlational reasoning, and two hypothesis-testing reasoning tasks. Korean students showed a significant higher score in proportional and probability reasoning tasks than the US students. However, the Korean showed a significant lower score in conservation and correlation reasoning tasks than their American counterparts. Further, Korean and the US college students showed a notably poor performance in hypothesis-testing skills comparing with other scientific reasoning skills, which supported the hypothesis that hypothesis-testing skills are more advanced ones than other scientific reasoning skills. In addition, the Korean showed a severe deficiency in candle-burning task which required the skill that students have to design a scientific test-procedure to test theoretical hypotheses. This study also discussed on the educational implications of the results of the present study.
The many target-detection methods that use forward-looking infrared (FUR) images can deal with large targets measuring $70{\times}40$ pixels, utilizing their shape features. However, detection small targets is difficult because they are more obscure and there are many target-like objects. Therefore, few studies have examined how to detect small targets consisting of fewer than $30{\times}10$ pixels. This paper presents a small target detection method using clutter rejection with stochastic hypothesis testing for FLIR imagery. The proposed algorithm consists of two stages; detection and clutter rejection. In the detection stage, the mean of the input FLIR image is first removed and then the image is segmented using Otsu's method. A closing operation is also applied during the detection stage in order to merge any single targets detected separately. Then, the residual of the clutters is eliminated using statistical hypothesis testing based on the t-test. Several FLIR images are used to prove the performance of the proposed algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm accurately detects small targets (Jess than $30{\times}10$ pixels) with a low false alarm rate compared to the center-surround difference method using the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve.
