  • Various grades of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC, MS 0.65-3.20) were prepared throngh reaction of the knit-cotton-waste with ethylene oxide(EO). The knit-cotton-waste was composed of 98% of $\alpha$-cellulose and 2% of other components, and the cellulose was highly pure. The molar ratio of EO to knit-cotton-waste and that of NaOH to knit-cotton-waste, and the agitation speed were the important factors determining the molar substitution(MS) during the preparation of HEC. The MS of HEC was remarkably increased with increasing molar ratio of EO' to knit-cotton-waste. When the molar ratio of EO to knit-cotton-waste was 3.5, that of NaOH to knit-cotton-waste was 1.25, and agitation speed was 450rpm, it was possible to prepare HEC of MS 2.5. The structure and crystallinity of HECs prepared were determined by FT-IR and X-ray diffraction.

  • Hydroxyethyl cellulose -based-viscosity modifying admixture and melamine-basd-superplasticizer were selected to be admixtures for self-compacting concrete based on the test results of fluidity and air content of mortar using 3 different viscosity modifying admixtures. The experimental results show that the initial and final set of self-compacting concrete and fly ash concrete with viscosity modifying admixture only have been delayed approximately 5 hours and 8~9 hours, respectively. It is found that the optimum dosage of viscosity modifying admixtures, coarse aggregate and cement content are 0.2% of water content, under 742 kg/$\textrm{m}^3$ and over 364 kg/$\textrm{m}^3$, respectively. Test results also show that the optimum fly ash in replacement of cement is 10% of cement weight for the enhancement of fluidity and long-term strength.

  • The gelling agent used in Zn-air cells plays a role in improving battery life. It prevents the evaporation of water and diffusion of $Zn^{2+}$ ions away from the current collector. Additional functionality was incorporated by replacing some of the gelling agents with new materials. Alcohols with moderate viscosity, namely maltose, sucrose, poly ethylene glycol 600, and 2-hydroxyethyl cellulose, were used to replace some gelling agents in this work. Among these alcohols, poly ethylene glycol 600 and 2-hydroxyethyl cellulose improved the cycle life of full cells. This improved cycle life was attributed to the inhibition of water electrolysis and the improved cycle life of the anode.

  • Silica-styrene butadiene rubber (Silica-SBR) compounds have been used in the preparation of tire treads. The silica dispersibility of silica-SBR compounds is related to the processability, mechanical properties, and wear resistance of tires. Recently, in order to improve the silica dispersibility of the silica-SBR compounds, the wet masterbatch (WMB) process was introduced, which is a method of mixing rubber in the water phase. We aimed to improve the silica dispersibility of the silica-SBR compounds by preparing a silica dispersant applicable to the WMB process. For this purpose, cellulose, 2-hydroxyethyl cellulose, and cellulose acetate were employed as a silica dispersant. The silica dispersibility of the compounds was measured by a moving die rheometer. Improvement in the processability of silica-SBR compounds was evaluated by the Mooney viscometer. The wear resistance of silica-SBR compounds using a cellulose dispersant was improved by up to 29%.

  • In recent industrialization and development due to information and communication technology, modern women in modern society are exposed to physical and mental health due to numerous stresses. Popular inflammations are attributable to a decrease in lactic acid bacteria, frequent antibiotic use, and a decrease in immunity. It is necessary to develop products that are helpful and reflected. The inner care gel currently introduced on the market can increase beneficial bacteria and maintain a healthy y-zone. The inner gel contains a hydrogel component. 90% is made up of water, and other components act as support for supporting water and are formed through crosslinking between polymer chains. Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is a hydroxyethyl ethylenetel of cellulose. The purpose of use is to act as a binder, an emulsion stabilizer, a viscosity enhancer (water-soluble), and a film forming agent. CA (crosslinker) is a crosslinking agent and serves to bind. Hydrogel in the beauty field acts as a film forming agent that gently wraps around the skin by forming a thin film and serves as an emulsion stabilizer that helps to prevent separation of other raw materials. It also acts as a thickener by increasing viscosity in cosmetics. In addition, it is used for glucose monitoring, nursing care, cell transplantation, and wound treatment in the bio field. Currently, it is understood that no products using functional hydrogel have been released, so in this study, a Y zone care hydrogel solution was manufactured to find out the antibacterial properties of the functional hydrogel, and a new solution was developed. As a result, it was confirmed that the appropriate Ph was applied to the Y zone, and after culturing Candida albicans in PDB medium, all three products of the Y zone care hydrogel solution showed an antibacterial effect of 0.5-1.0mm

  • This paper reports a customized silver ink and its inkjet printing process on a cellulose electro-active paper (EAPap). To synthesize a silver ink, silver nanoparticle is synthesized from silver nitrate, polyvinylpyrrolidone and ethylene glycol, followed by adding a viscosifier, hydroxyethyl-cellulose solution, and a surfactant, diethylene glycol. The silver ink is used in an inkjet printer (Fujifilm Dimatix DMP-2800 series) to print silver electrodes on cellulose EAPap. After printing, the electrodes are heat treated at $200^{\circ}C$. The sintered electrodes show that the thickness of the electrodes linearly increases as the number of printing layers increases. The electrical resistivity of the printed electrodes is $23.5{\mu}{\Omega}-cm$. This customized ink can be used in inkjet printer to print complex electrode patterns on cellulose EAPap to fabricate flexible smart actuators, flexible electronics and sensors.

  • Poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) has been employed as a microchip material for DNA separation in microfluidic condition. Different sieving molecules such as cellulose derivatives having glucose building block (methyl cellulose (MC), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC)) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) having linear (ring-opened ethylene oxide) unit were used and their performance was compared in terms of separation efficiency and resolution. In general, PEO showed better separation performance than cellulose derivatives probably due to the nature of linear shape polymer conformation. It was possible to perform at least 15 consecutive running with 1.2% PEO at the electric field strength around 200 V/cm. Fast analysis of the standard $\Phi$X 174 RF DNA/Hae III (less than 130s) was obtained with the number of the theoretical plate around 250,000/m. Our PMDS microchip was applied to the measurement of CAG repeat number, which is related to male infertile disease.

  • Cellulose was reacted with ethylene oxide to get hydroxyethylcellulose. Quaternary ammonium salt was produced by reaction of epichlorohydrin and trialkylamine. The epoxide ring was opened by acid addition to 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrialkylammonium chloride. Previously unreported two compounds, hydroxyethylcellulose-2-hydroxypropylammonium chloride ether and hydroxyethylcellulose-2-hydroxypropyltriethylammonium chloride ether were synthesized by substitution reaction of hydroxyethylcellulose with glycidyltrialkylammonium chloride or 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl-glycidyltrialkylammonium trialkylammonium chloride. All of the compounds including starting materials and reaction intermediates were characterized by $^1H$-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy.

  • Reactive hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate (reactive HPMCP) was synthesized by using a stepwise urethane reaction with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and 2-hydroxyethyl moth acrylate (HEMA). Molecular weight, acid number, and critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the synthesized reactive HPMCP and pristine HPMCP were measured and used as a polymeric surfactant in the emulsion polymerizations of styrene. In the preparation of HPMCP-hybrid poly styrene nanoparticles, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 wt% of HPMCPs were introduced, and the maximum rate of polymerization ($R_{p,max}$), the average number of radicals per particle (n), particle size distribution were investigated. In addition, core - shell morphology of the nanoparticles were observed by using TEM and their thermal stabilities were measured by using TGA. Reactive HPMCP showed higher $R_{p,max}$, smaller particle size, larger values of n and gel contents as compared with pristine HPMCP, due to the vinyl groups from HEMA, which can be reacted with styrene oligomers, in the reactive HPMCP.
