  • The effects of various hydroxide compounds on base stacking (BS) were investigated for pre-concentration of DNA molecules in capillary electrophoresis (CE). In BS, hydroxide ions ($OH^-$) were electrokinetically introduced after DNA sample injection. A neutralization reaction occurred between the $OH^-$ and $Tris^+$ of the running buffer, which resulted in a zone of lower conductivity. Within the low conductivity zone of the high electric field, the DNA molecules moved more rapidly and were concentrated in front of the low conductivity zone. At the same BS conditions of CE, the enhanced sensitivity of the DNA samples was dependent on the kind of multivalent cations in the hydroxide compounds. Except for LiOH, the hydroxide compounds with monovalent cations showed more effective BS than those with divalent cations because of solubility, ionic strength and electronegativity. The order of hydroxide compounds that enhance the detection sensitivity of DNA molecules was as follows: NaOH > $NH_4OH$ > KOH > $Ba(OH)_2$ > $Sr(OH)_2$ > LiOH > $Ca(OH)_2$ > $Mg(OH)_2$. $NH_4OH$, KOH and $Ba(OH)_2$ proved to be efficient hydroxide compounds to use as effective BS reagents in CE instead of NaOH.

  • The anion exchange membrane used in alkaline membrane fuel cells transports hydroxide ions, and ion conductivity affects fuel cell performance. Thus, the measurement of absolute hydroxide ion conductivity is essential. However, it is challenging to accurately measure hydroxide ion conductivity since hydroxide ions are easily poisoned in the form of bicarbonate by carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In this study, we applied electrochemical ion exchange treatment to measure the absolute hydroxide ion conductivity of the anion exchange membrane. In addition, we investigated the effect of carbon dioxide poisoning of hydroxide ions on electrochemical performance by measuring bicarbonate conductivity. Commercial anion exchange membranes (FAA-3-50 and Orion TM1) and polyphenylene-based block copolymer (QPP-6F) were used.

  • Analysis of particle size distribution of a sample of fine aluminum hydroxide powder was carried out by four different methods, i. e., conductivity, air permeability, gas-adsorption and sedimentation. Each method was reproducible. The results obtained by Coulter counter and sedimentation balance were similar, and the data obtained by Lea and Nurse permeameter and Stroehlein areameter were also similar. But the results differ considerabley between the former and the latter. The advantages and disavantages of each method were discussed briefly and a means of comparing the results with those obtianed by surface area measurements was shown.

  • Ionic conduction mechanism of Mg-Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated with CO32- (Mg-Al CO32- LDH) was studied. The electromotive force for the water vapor concentration cell using Mg-Al CO32- LDH as electrolyte showed water vapor partial pressure dependence and obeyed the Nernst equation, indicating that the hydroxide ion transport number of Mg-Al CO32- LDH is almost unity. The ionic conductivity of Mg(OH)2, MgCO3 and Al2(CO3)3 was also examined. Only Al2(CO3)3 showed high hydroxide ion conductivity of the order of 10-4 S cm-1 under 80% relative humidity, suggesting that Al2(CO3)3 is an ion conducting material and related to the generation of carrier by interaction with water. To discuss the ionic conduction mechanism, Mg-Al CO32- LDH having deuterium water as interlayer water (Mg-Al CO32- LDH(D2O)) was prepared. After the adsorbed water molecules on the surface of Mg-Al CO32- LDH(D2O) were removed by drying, DC polarization test for dried Mg-Al CO32- LDH(D2O) was examined. The absorbance attributed to O-D-stretching band for Mg-Al CO32- LDH(D2O) powder at around the positively charged electrode is larger than that before polarization, indicating that the interlayer in Mg-Al CO32- LDH is a hydroxide ion conduction channel.

  • Nanofiltration (NF) experiments were conducted to investigate fouling of Al-hydroxide precipitate and the influence of organic compound, inorganic compound, and their combination, i.e., multiple foulants. $CaCl_2$ and $MgSO_4$ were employed as surrogates of inorganic compounds while humic acid was used as surrogate of organic compound. The flux attained from NF experiments was fitted with the mathematical fouling model to evaluate the potential fouling mechanisms. Al-hydroxide fouling with a cake formation mechanism had little effect on the NF membrane fouling regardless of the Al concentration. The NF fouling by Al-hydroxide precipitate was deteriorated in presence of inorganic matter. The effect of Mg was more critical in increasing the fouling than Ca. This is because the Mg ions enhanced the resistances of the cake layer accumulated by the Al-hydroxide precipitate on the membrane surfaces. However, the fouling with Mg was dramatically mitigated by adding humic acid. It is interesting to observe that the removal of the conductivity was enhanced to 61.2% in presence of Mg and humic acid from 30.9% with Al-hydroxide alone. The influence of dissolved matter (i.e., colloids) was more negative than particulate matter on the NF fouling for Al-hydroxide precipitate in presence of inorganic and organic matter.

  • This study was aimed at developing and evaluating a diffusive sampling method using a barium hydroxide solution as an absorbent for measuring carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in ambient air. The collected $CO_2$ concentration was calculated by the change of conductivity resulted in the reaction of $CO_3{^{2-}}$ and $Ba^{2+}$ in aqueous solution. The sampling rate for the diffusive sampler was determined 0.218 mL/min, as obtained from the slope of the linear correlation between the $CO_2$ mass collected by the diffusive sampler and the time-weighted $CO_2$ concentration with the active sampling method. The unexposed blank sampler sealed in aluminium foil-polyethylene laminated packets has remained stable during at least one-month storage period. A good correlation was observed between the diffusive sampler and active sampler with a coefficient of determination of 0.956. This diffusive sampler would be suitable for the indoor $CO_2$ concentration monitoring.

  • This study reports the fabrication of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) containing two kinds of functional groups: i) trimethylphosphite (TMP) and ii) trimethylamine (TMA). We carried out the synthesis of polymers to enhance thermal stability and ion conductivity. The alternative polymer was prepared using 2,2-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl)propane and decafluorobiphenyl. The membrane was fabricated by solution casting method. The thermal stability of membranes was examined by TGA. The physiochemical properties of membranes were also investigated in terms of water uptake, swelling ratio, ion exchange capacity, and ion conductivity. The hydroxide ion conductivity of the membranes reached about 20.2 mS/cm for quaternary ammonium poly(arylene ether) (QA-PAE) containing TMA moiety and 5.1 mS/cm for quaternary phosphonium PAE (QP-PAE) containing TMP moiety at $90^{\circ}C$.

  • The relative electrical conductivity of vacuum deposited Al films on a soda-lime(2947) and an alumino boro silicate(7809) glass was investigated with the variation of the relative humidity, temperature and film thickness. The structure and microstructure of Al films before and after exposure to the humidity wereexamined by the X-ray Diffractormenter(XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM). As the relative humidity increased, the electrical conductivity of Al films on both glasses was decreased. However, the Al films on 7809 glass showed higher conductivity than that of 2947 glass under the same testing conditions. The decreasing of electrical conductivity was caused by the formation of Aluminum hydroxide which was made by the reaction between the aluminum films and water vapor.

  • A hydrophilic alkaline room temperature ionic liquid electrolyte (RT-IL) carrying hydroxide ion as an anion and 1-benzyl-3-butylimidazolium as a cation was synthesized. Electrochemical, physical and structural properties of the synthesized RT-IL were characterized using cyclic voltammetry, ionic conductivity, viscosity, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), FT-IR, and 1H-NMR measurements. High ionic conductivity and low viscosity characteristics comparable to 0.1 M KCl electrolyte solution were achieved for the RT-IL in addition to a wide electrochemical potential window of about 4.4 V. The results indicate that the RT-IL is promising for future applications as an alternative electrolyte to energy and environmental research fields.
