  • Highly porous amorphous silica obtained from a serpentine mineral by hydrochloric acid treatment was used to produce a zeolite A through the hydrothermal reaction under atmospheric pressure. An optimum synthesis condition of the zeolite A was achieved at $80^{\circ}C$ for two hours with a mole ratio of $Na_2O/SiO_2$1.5. Additionally, it was found that a hydroxysodalite zeolite was formed under the experimental conditions over the reaction temperature of $80^{\circ}C$ and the reaction time of 120 minutes even though the crystallization of zeolite proceeds rapidly as the reaction temperature and the alkalinity becomes higher.

  • $AI_2O_3/Ca-TZP$ composites was prepared by using the starting powder of alumina and Ca-TZP synthesized by hydrothermal reaction and investigated to its characteristics. The ratio of tetragonal zirconia to monoclinic within $AI_2O_3$ matrix was decreased with an addition of Ca-TZP content, but the absolute amount of tetragonal phase in composites was increased with an addition of Ca-TZP content. The value of fracture toughness in $AI_2O_3/Ca-TZP$composites was proportional to the amounts of transformed tetragonal phase which formed by crack propagation in fracture, and therefore, it was gradually increased with an addition of Ca- TZP content.

  • Single crystals of ZnO were grown hydrothermally with KOH solution in silver lined autoclave. The effect of LiOH and NH4OH on the morphology of as-grown crystals was studied. As-grown crystals were pale green and the maximum size was 30×30×20mm3. Addition of LiOH reduced the density of flaws on the (0001) face of as-grown ZnO crystals. In highly concentrated KOH solution, ZnO had a strong tendency to grow along the c-axis. When 1.0-2.0 M of NH4OH was added into mineralizer, growth rate along the direction of a-axis increased. From this result, ZnO single crystals of equant-faced hexagonal prism could be grown with acicular seeds.

  • Layered-double hydroxide (LDH)-based nanostructures offer the two-fold advantage of being active catalysts with incredibly large specific surface areas. As such, they have been studied extensively over the last decade and applied in roles as diverse as light source, catalyst, energy storage mechanism, absorber, and anion exchanger. They exhibit a unique lamellar structure consisting of a wide variety of combinations of metal cations and various anions, which determine their physical and chemical performances, and make them a popular research topic. Many reviewed papers deal with these unique properties, synthetic methods, and applications. Most of them, however, are focused on the form-factor of nanopowder, as well as on the control of morphologies via one-step synthetic methods. LDH nanostructures need to be easy to control and fabricate on rigid substrates such as metals, semiconductors, oxides, and insulators, to facilitate more viable applications of these nanostructures to various solid-state devices. In this review, we explore ways to grow and control the various LDH nanostructures on rigid substrates.

  • We report the growth and enhanced photoelectrochemcial (PEC) water-splitting reactivity of few-layer MoS2 nanosheets on TiO2 nanowires. TiO2 nanowires with lengths of ~1.5 ~ 2.0 ㎛ and widths of ~50~300 nm are synthesized on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrates at 180 ℃ using hydrothermal methods with Ti(C4H9O)4. Few-layer MoS2 nanosheets with heights of ~250 ~ 300 nm are vertically grown on TiO2 nanowires at a moderate growth temperature of 300 ℃ using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The MoS2 nanosheets on TiO2 nanowires exhibit typical Raman and ultraviolet-visible light absorption spectra corresponding to few-layer thick MoS2. The PEC performance of the MoS2 nanosheet/TiO2 nanowire heterostructure is superior to that of bare TiO2 nanowires. MoS2/TiO2 heterostructure shows three times higher photocurrent than that of bare TiO2 nanowires at 0.6 V. The enhanced PEC photocurrent is attributed to improved light absorption of MoS2 nanosheets and efficient charge separation through the heterojunction. The photoelectrode of the MoS2/TiO2 heterostructure is stably sustained during on-off switching PEC cycle.

  • Doped and undoped-BiVO4 samples with different elements (Li, Mg) and amounts were synthesized with a hydrothermal method. The synthesized samples were characterized using various techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis diffusion reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Photocatalytic activity of the samples was evaluated by measuring the degradation of methyl blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that the incorporation of Mg and Li into BiVO4 caused lattice distortion, the presence of surface hydroxyl groups, a narrower band gap, and a reduced recombination ratio of photo-induced electron-hole pairs. Notably, the photocatalytic activity of Mg5%-Li5% co-doped BiVO4 sample exhibited a significant improvement compared to that of undoped BiVO4 sample.

  • Magnesium hydroxide sulfate hydrate ($5Mg(OH)_2.MgSO_4{\cdot}3H_2O$, abbreviated 513 MHSH) whiskers were synthesized using MgO and $MgSO_4.7H_2O$ as reactants without addition of basic solution. Previously, MHSH whiskers were prepared by hydrothermal method using $MgSO_4$ in aqueous ammonia. In this work, for the first time, we synthesized a high purity MHSH via ambient pressure. In addition, a high molar ratio of $MgSO_4$ : MgO is an important key to the formation of high purity MHSH. Also, it was possible to prepare whiskers with high aspect ratio using an increasing reaction time in the reaction between the remaining $SO_4^{2-}$ ions and the ${Mg(OH)_6}^{4-}$ fragment, finally producing one-dimensional whiskers.

  • Texture and mineralogy of different microlayers of deep-sea manganese nodules are investigted to reveal the environmental changes of nodules during a nodule formation. Basically a nodule can have three types (A, B and C) of microlayer. Some nodules show only one or two types of microlayer. The classification is based primarily on the texture. The surface torture of type A is coarsely porous globular microstructure whereas type B and C are intermediate to finely porous textures. The type A is characterized by its highest Mn content $(30.6\%)$ and relatively well-crystallized todorokite as veil as the rapid growth rate. Smectite and biogenic silica (radiolaria) are also easily observed in the type A layer. It appears that the hydrothermal activity is one of the favorable mechanism of formation for the type A layer. The hydrothermal solution is possibly supplied from nearby fracture zone and spreading center.

  • ZnO nanorods were grown on the $Cd_xZn_{1-x}O$ seed layers with various Cd mole fractions by hydrothermal method. The effects of the Cd mole fraction for $Cd_xZn_{1-x}O$ seed layers on the structural and optical properties of the ZnO nanorods were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and photoluminescence. The narrowest full-width at half-maximum and largest grain size of the $Cd_xZn_{1-x}O$ seed layers, indicating improvement in crystal quality, were observed at the Cd mole fraction of 0.5. At the Cd mole fraction of 0.5, the largest enhancement in the density, the crystal quality, and the growth rate of the ZnO nanorods was observed while their appearance was not affected significantly by the incorporation of the Cd in the $Cd_xZn_{1-x}O$ seed layers. Consequently, the luminescent properties of the ZnO nanorods were enhanced. The largest improvement in the structural and optical properties of the ZnO nanorods was observed at the Cd mole fraction of 0.5.

  • We report three-dimensional polycrystalline anatase TiO2 structures (3D a-TiO2) for environmental and bio-medical applications. The 3D a-TiO2 was synthesized without thermal treatment by the growth of rod-like polycrystals on Degussa P25 (P25) via low temperature (< $85^{\circ}C$) modified alkali hydrothermal processing. X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopic results showed that the rod-like polycrystals of 3D a-TiO2 possessed the highly anatase nanostructures. The photocatalytic activity of 3D a-TiO2 was found to be 2.2 times higher than that of P25. The recyclability of the 3D a-TiO2 was found to be high: the decolorization rate was 94.8% of the initial value after fifteen cycles. In addition, 3D a-TiO2 exhibited excellent antibacterial activities for the sterilization of gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Even at the 10th recycled use, more than 98.4% of E. coli and S. aureus can be killed. These results indicated that 3D a-TiO2 might have utility in several promising applications such as photocatalytic water/air purification and bactericidal agents.
