Hydraulic issues such as flow resistance, side wall correction, sediment, erosion and deposition, and channel design have close relation with distribution of bed shear stresses but the measurement of the distribution of bed shear stresses is not easy. In this study the Preston tube which makes possible relatively simple measurement of bed shear stresses is used to analyze the characteristics of bed shear distribution in compound open channels with different depth ratio. The Preston tubes are made and calibrated to develop the calibration formula and then they are applied to measure bed shear stress distribution in 5 cases depth ratio condition of compound channels. The results are compared with former experiment data, and characteristics of bed shear stress distributions are studied with different channel scales and Reynolds numbers. Although bed shear distributions with depth ratio show overall agreement with former studies, some differences are verified in bed shear variation, formation of inflection point in main channel, and distribution near floodplain junction which are due to high Reynolds number. Through the study applicability of the Preston tubes are also verified and characteristics of bed shear distribution in compound channels are suggested with Reynolds number and depth ratio.

Various types of flow patterns around the stepped weir and spillway, such as the skimming flow over such structures and the wave-type flow with a standing undular hydraulic jump and roller downstream of the structures, are developed in open channels. Unsteady three-dimensional numerical simulations are carried out using a hybrid RANS-LES turbulence modeling approach and the volume of fluid method for resolving free surface fluctuations to represent the turbulent flow including the skimming flow and wave-type flow over a stepped weir installed in a rectangular channel. The comparison of numerical results with an existing experimental measurement reveals that the present numerical simulations reasonably well reproduce the turbulent flow passing the stepped weir, in terms of time-averaged velocity profiles at selected locations downstream of the weir, flow topology characterized by the wave-type and skimming flows, the maximum height and length of the standing wave and the length of reattachment of recirculating zone. The numerical result further elucidates the distinct flow behaviors of the wave-type and skimming flow by presenting instantaneous intense variations of free surface and velocity vectors, the distributions of Reynolds shear stress and turbulent kinetic energy and three-dimensional complex features of coherent structures and total pressure distribution.

Purpose: The development of compact tractors that can be used in dry fields, greenhouses, and orchards for pest control, weeding, transportation, and harvesting is necessary. The development and performance evaluation of power transmission units are very important when it comes to tractor development. This study evaluates the performance of a driving power transmission unit of a 50 kW multi-purpose narrow tractor. Methods: The performance of the transmission and forward-reverse clutch, which are the main components of the driving power transmission unit of multi-purpose narrow tractors, was evaluated herein. The transmission performance was evaluated in terms of power transmission efficiency, noise, and axle load, while the forward-reverse clutch performance was evaluated in terms of durability. The transmission's power transmission efficiency accounts for the measurement of transmission losses, which occur in the transmission's gear, bearing, and oil seal. The motor's power was input in the transmission's input shaft. The rotational speed and torque were measured in the final output shaft. The noise was measured at each speed level after installing a microphone on the left, right, and upper sides. The axle load test was performed through a continuous equilibrium load test, in which a constant load was continuously applied. The forward-reverse clutch performance was calculated using the engine torque to axle torque ratio with the assembled engine and transmission. Results: The loss of power in the transmission efficiency test of the driving power unit was 6.0-9.7 kW based on all gear steps. This loss of horsepower was equal to 11-18% of the input power (52 kW). The transmission efficiency of the driving power unit was 81.5-89.0%. The noise of the driving power unit was 50-57 dB at 800 rpm, 70-77 dB at 1600 rpm, and 76-83 dB at 2400 rpm. The axle load test verified that the input torque and axle revolutions were constant. The results of the forward-reverse clutch performance test revealed that hydraulic pressure and torque changes were stably maintained when moving forward or backward, and its operation met the hydraulic design standards. Conclusions: When comprehensively examined, these research results were similar to the main driving power transmission systems from USA and Japan in terms of performance. Based on these results, tractor prototypes are expected to be created and supplied to farmhouses after going through sufficient in-situ adaptability tests.
The purpose of the study was to verify deduction of each coefficient necessary to analysis on micro-pressure waves and reliability of the analysis result. The tunnel running train model testing device used in the test was manufactured by scale of 1:60 and the study used a train model with ten cars long according to specifications of KTX model. The study applied tunnels with cross sections of $107.9m^3\;and\;95.1m^3$ and applied tunnel extensions with 1km, 0.75km and 0.5km. Also, the study tested train speed by changing it into 275, 300, 325 and 350km/h. The test device was a hydraulic launch system composed of a train model, a hydraulic launcher, a tunnel model and a brake. The study measured speed of a model trainby a speed sensor installed in the point of each 1.2m from the front of tunnel entrance and a pithead of tunnel exit and measured pressure change of internal tunnel continuously by installing pressure sensors in the entrance part of tunnel, in the middle part of tunnel and in the exit part of tunnel. As the result of the measurement, it was known that pressure slope of pressure wave happened in the entrance part of tunnel was increased by a nonlinear effect while spreading the tunnel or its pressure slope was reduced by diffusion. Also, the study compared and analyzed micro-pressure waves happened in the exit part of the tunnel by installing each kind of hoods in the entrance part of the tunnel to prevent reduction of micro-pressure waves.

The past few decades of industrialization enabled human-centered stream developments, which in turn resulted in constructing straight or covered streams, which are used only for sewage disposal purpose. However, these types of streams have become the cause of flood damages such as localized heavy rain. In response, various construction methods have been implemented to prevent stream and embankment damages. However, regulations regarding these measures only lay out minimum standards such as the height of slopes and the minimum angle of inclination. Moreover, examination of tractive force, the most crucial factor in preventing flood damage, is nonexistent. Therefore, this study evaluates various tractive forces by implementing a porous concrete tetrapod at a full scale artificial stream for experiment, controlling the rate of inflow, and measuring the velocity and depth of the stream under different experiment conditions. The test results of the compressive strength, and porosity and density of rock of the porous concrete tetrapod was between 16.6 and 23.2 MPa, and the actual measurement of air void was 10.1%, thus satisfying domestic standard. The result of tractive force experiment showed a limiting tractive force of $47.202N/m^2$, not satisfying the tractive force scope of $67N/m^2$ the stream design working expertise proposes. However, there was neither damage nor loss of blocks and hardpan. Based on previous researches, it can be expected that there will be resistance against a stronger tractive force. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct another experiment on practical limiting tractive force by adjusting some experimental conditions.

The aim of this study is to analyze the dynamic characteristics of proportional control valves according to various working conditions as a basic study for developing proportional control valves for auto-steering tractors. The dynamic characteristics of proportional valves were measured using hydraulic characteristics measurement system, and the power was analyzed using measured flow rate and pressure data. As the experimental conditions, the tractor engine speed and steering angle was selected as the main variables, and the experiment was performed on urethane road conditions. As a result, it was found that the flow rate, pressure, and power of the proportional control valve increased as the tractor engine speed and steering angle increased. In particular, as the steering angle increased at the same engine speed, the flow rate, pressure, and power tended to increase by up to 190%, 172%, and 273%, respectively. Similarly, as the engine speed increased at the same steering angle, the flow rate, pressure, and power tended to increase up to 161%, 122%, and 168%, respectively. Therefore, it can be seen that the steering angle has a higher influence on the dynamic characteristics of the proportional control valve than the engine speed.

The influence of unsubmerged resistance bodies in a channel turbulence flow on energy loss was investigated by hydraulic experiments. Square-shaped multi-piers were used for unsubmerged structure or rigid vegetation in an open channel. In experimental channel flows multi-piers were arranged in double or single row along the channel direction, and mean-concept uniform elevations were attained and measured with a set of discharges and channel slopes. Applying the experimental results to the Manning equation, the equivalent resistance coefficient n, which implicates flow resistance and energy loss due to bottom friction as well as drag, was evaluated with varying the interval of piers and the uniform water depth. And the experimentally evaluated n values were compared with the semi-theoretical formula of the equivalent resistance coefficient derived from momentum analysis including a drag interaction coefficient. From the comparisons it was found that the interaction effect of piers on flow resistance was significant for the overall energy losses in a channel flow. The n values decrease when the interval of piers in flow-direction is less than about 2.2 times of the pier width. And it was also found that the n values increase with the 2/3 power of water depth in the theoretical formula, since the drag interaction coefficient was found to be mostly dependent on the interval of piers.
A mathematical model for a three phase fluidized bed bioreactor (TFBBR) was proposed to describe oxygen utilization rate, biomass concentration and the removal efficiency of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in wastewater treatment. The model consisted of the biofilm model to describe the oxygen uptake rate and the hydraulic model to describe flow characteristics to cause the oxygen distribution in the reactor. The biofilm model represented the oxygen uptake rate by individual bioparticle and the hydrodynamics of fluids presented an axial dispersion flow with back mixing in the liquid phase and a plug flow in the gas phase. The difference of setting velocity along the column height due to the distributions of size and number of bioparticle was considered. The proposed model was able to predict the biomass concentration and the dissolved oxygen concentration along the column height. The removal efficiency of COD was calculated based on the oxygen consumption amounts that were obtained from the dissolved oxygen concentration. The predicted oxygen concentration by the proposed model agreed reasonably well with experimental measurement in a TFBBR. The effects of various operating parameters on the oxygen concentration were simulated based on the proposed model. The media size and media density affected the performance of a TFBBR. The dissolved oxygen concentration was significantly affected by the superficial liquid velocity but the removal efficiency of COD was significantly affected by the superficial gas velocity.
In this paper, a compression to tensile load converter device was developed to determine the anisotropic tensile strength of concrete. The samples were made from a mixture of water, fine sand and cement, respectively. Concrete samples with a hole at its center was prepared and subjected to tensile loading using the compression to tensile load converter device. A hydraulic load cell applied compressive loading to converter device with a constant pressure of 0.02 MPa per second. Compressive loading was converted to tensile stress on the sample because of the overall test design. The samples have three different configurations related to loading axis; 0, $45^{\circ}$, $-45^{\circ}$. A series of finite element analysis were done to analyze the effect of hole diameter on stress concentration of the hole side along its horizontal axis to provide a suitable criterion for determining the real tensile strength of concrete. Concurrent with indirect tensile test, Brazilian test and three point loading test were also performed to compare the results from the three methods. Results obtained by this device were quite encouraging and show that the tensile strengths of concrete were similar in different directions because of the homogeneity of bonding between the concrete materials. Also, the indirect tensile strength was clearly lower than the Brazilian test strength and three point loading test.
A hydraulic tensile test machine (HSTM) is one of the devices used to obtain the flow stress of a material during high-speed elongation. This paper first describes some features of a newly built HSTM. The improvement histories of the upper and lower jigs, which are the most vital parts of the HSTM, are also presented. We have frequently witnessed test failures with 1st generation jigs and specimens due to slip between the jig and specimen. 2nd generation jigs provide more stable test results, but the use of a longer upper jig induces excessive vibration and consequently makes it difficult to attach an environment chamber. 3rd generation jigs have some advances in terms of the symmetric fastening between the upper jig and specimen, as well as an exemption from direct contact between the lower jig and specimen. The performance of an environment chamber is verified by high and low temperature tests. A high-speed displacement measurement system is introduced based on a high-speed camera and motion-tracking software with aid of a surface grid device for the specimen.
