  • Humor is often considered as a positive phenomenon, and thus frequently employed as an impression management technique for individuals. However, humor may create unexpected outcomes in terms of impression management. This study investigates the relationship between humor and impression management of individuals within three South Korean organizations. A qualitative methodology is employed and data collected through participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Findings suggest that humor may be used more frequently by workers in superior positions, and it may be dangerous for individuals in subordinate positions to initiate humor, as negative impressions such as lack of professionalism and work competence may be crafter through humor. In particular, traditional Confucian values and expectations may lead to perceptions that humor is inappropriate and even rude when it is used by individuals in subordinate positions. However, humor may help to craft an independent identity, and help alter user's impressions as desired. This suggests that while perceptions towards humor as an impression management tool may embed significant risks, humor may help individuals to influence their impressions and diverge from a stereotypical expectations and impressions of workers(according to their hierarchical status), which may be interpreted in multiple ways. This implies that organizations should be careful in encouraging workers to use humor as an impression management tactic, as the relational outcomes may be complex, depending on the cultural understanding of hierarchy and relationships between communicators.

As the subjects of research, this study selected and that recorded the ten-times different number of audiences even though both works were produced by the same studio called 'Odolttogi'. In the results of analyzing those two works, there were differences. Drawing the characteristics of humor, the frequency of humor should be a lot more shown in the early to mid part than the latter part, and there should be diverse types of humor. And the frequency of humor by main characters should be increased. When the types of supporting roles were more diverse, the tendency of humor was also shown diversely. Also, the humor that was formed within relationships of characters was more effective than the humor formed alone. Through the slapstick or linguistic comedy in which such interactions are shown into actions, more diverse verbal plays could be shown. These elements could make it possible for animated works to diversely express more creative and funnier scenes of humor.

  • This paper deals with the aspects of meaning of verbal humor that are responsible for eliciting laughs. It is generally accepted that the perception of incongruity is involved in the experience of humor, but few clear definitions or explanations have been given of the nature of this incongruity. Among the few, Curc (1995, 1997, 1998), for example, tries to analyze verbal humor, specifically the relation between a stimulus and the hearer's interpretation of it, in line with the principle of relevance (Spreber and Wilson 1986, 1995). However, as he admits, his account covers only a limited amount of cases. This paper will delve into the meaning of humor with extensive data and present a set of individual mechanisms involved in humor. It will also propose a new conceptual theory of humor that persuasively accounts for the mechanisms of humor as a whole.

  • Conventionally, humor has been regarded as an indicator of mental health, but several researchers has proposed that the effects of humor in mental health may be different depending on humor styles. Therefore, further studies about humor style and the effect of humor are worthwhile. In the present study, we shall pay attention to buffering effect of humor on a decline in mental health. we attempted to identify weather the buffering effect of humor is different depending on humor styles in psychiatric patients. For this purpose correlation analysis on humor style, depression, anxiety and life satisfaction were carried out, and hierarchical regression analysis were applied to analyse moderating effect of humor style. Consequently, self-enhancing humor has a significant moderating effect on both depression and anxiety. Whereas, affiliative humor has a significant interactive effect with only depression. The conclusion which can be drawn from this study is that positive humor can work as a protective factor on a decline in mental health, and using self-enhancing humor is effective to increase life satisfaction. It might have a convergent meaning on adaptation that psychiatric patients could have a good adaptation(by using positive humor) in real world.
