Development of Standards and Criteria for Accreditation of a Baccalaureate Nursing Education Program: Reflections on the Unique Characteristics of the Nursing Profession (간호학 특성을 반영한 4년제 간호교육 평가인정 표준 및 기준 개발)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine characteristics of nursing science and identify expected outcomes from baccalaureate graduates, and to develop accreditation standards and criteria reflecting the characteristics of the nursing profession. Methods: A methodological research design was utilized in this study. Related literature reviews and the nursing education program goals and objectives of the 99 nursing schools in Korea were analyzed. A cross-sectional survey research design was utilized to test the validity of the developed characteristics of the nursing profession and their accreditation criteria and standards. The face validity was from the advisory committee and public committee hearing. Results: The characteristics of nursing science were defined with five concepts including humanity, scientific knowledge, professionalism, therapeutic relationship, and facilitating well-being. The expected outcomes from graduates were identified as providing holistic nursing, critical thinking, establishing professionalism and leadership, construction of a therapeutic relationship, and skilled nursing practice. Finally6 standards and 14 criteria reflecting the unique characteristics of the nursing profession were developed for accreditation. These proposed accreditation standards and criteria are a challenge to promote the quality of nursing science.

Aesthetic Symbolism in Lewis Mumford's Architectural Criticism (루이스 멈퍼드의 건축비평에서 미적 상징의 문제)

  • One of the essential characteristics of Lewis Mumford's architectural criticism is the coherent emphasis on symbolism. Such emphasis stems from his understanding of city and humanity in the context of civilization: first, that the architecture symbolizes institutions of urban civilization; second, that the technical aspect of human nature should be balanced with its artistic aspects. Mumford believed that each architectural type requires an appropriate symbolic expression corresponding to its purpose and that a new symbolic expression, in a new cultural context, should replace the conventional expression. He took symbolism for an intuitional expression, and read multi-layered meanings of architecture: 'practical function' by way of rational reason and 'symbolic function' by way of intuition. He pursued a balance between practicality and beauty to rectify the situation of modern civilization, in which symbolism, the expression of its intuitional aspect, is in crisis. Ultimately, for Mumford, the essential task of architectural critic is of the interpretation of symbolism, aiming at the correspondence and communication between the architect(artist)'s intuition and critic(interpreter)'s via the media of symbol. The critic can play some privileged role of interpreting even symbols unintended by the architect. The ideal architectural critic, after all, would be the one who is able to understand the city, technology and human beings in the perspective of civilization and to interpret the architect's artistic expression in its highest form through intuition. Mumford established himself as such a critic and evaluated the status of aesthetic accomplishment of his contemporary architecture and technological civilization, giving emphasis on the artistic practice in architecture as a solution.

Effectiveness analysis based on computational thinking of a computing course for non-computer majors (컴퓨팅 사고력 관점에서 본 컴퓨터 비전공자 대상 교양 컴퓨팅 수업의 효과성 분석 연구)

  • Given the background of so-called 'the 4th industrial revolution', universities practice computing education for non-majors to equip them with computational thinking(CT). Universities apply different courses but researches analyzing effectiveness of the courses based on CT are limited. This research is conducted to understand a computing course for non-majors is effective in terms of CT. A CT based evaluation framework is designed referring to AP Computer Science Principles. Questionnaires are developed based on the framework and applied to the course participants. As results, students' post scores are significantly higher than pre scores. In addition, there are significant differences in pre-test scores by major category while there is no difference in post-test. Humanity & social science group showed the largest difference between pre and post results with science & engineering and computer in order. In sum, it is found that this course is effective to facilitate students abilities in terms of CT, particularly for the non-computer majors.

An overview on humanistic imagination in mathematics education (수학교육에서 인문학적 상상력에 대한 소고)

  • The purpose of this study is to discuss what the incorporation of humanistic imagination into mathematics means to mathematics education and to suggest implications for mathematics education in school mathematics. Traditionally, mathematics has been perceived to be far from our life problems because it targets logical and pure abstract thinking. According to international mathematics and science studies such as TIMSS and PISA, Korean students have relatively high mathematics achievement in the international research, but their attitude toward mathematics is very negative and their awareness of why they are learning mathematics and their satisfaction with life is low. In mathematics education, linking mathematics with humanities imagination allows students to view problems of human life from a humanities perspective, and to have an understanding of others and reflect on themselves from a new perspective. The researcher introduces several examples of whether mathematics and humanistic imagination can be combined for mathematics education. In this study, the ultimate reason for learning mathematics is to achieve learners to realize the principles of life or Dharma, and to live a happier life. However, in order to expand its rich meaning by making these new attempts in mathematics education, the researcher argued that tolerance and patience are needed for many challenges and difficulties in improving the quality of mathematics content itself including applying humanistic imagination to mathematics properly.

  • This study links the concept and implications of the anthropocene to the humanistic functionalism of Scandinavian design. Since the Industrial Revolution, the direction of modern design has been centered on the standardization of mechanical products and functionalism aimed at standardization. This is based on the human-centered dual idea of human and nature. But Scandinavian countries have developed humanistic functionalist designs, with exceptions emphasizing human organic relationships to nature instead of dual thinking. This is believed to be in line with the anthropocene discourse, which envisions the emergence of a new level of humanity and the regeneration of the natural environment under the banner of equality for all species on Earth. In this paper, the discussion was embodied in a way that combines the wide range of anthropocene discourses with the major issues of posthuman and postnature, which are the latest human and natural views. And we have selected and analyzed examples of modern Scandinavian designs focused on the circulatory potential of materials, and have sought the direction of trends suitable for the anthropocene era.

A Justification on the Evil of Death (죽음의 나쁨에 관한 정당화)

  • Epicurus and Lucretius expressed that death is neither evil to the living nor the dead. On the contrary, our everyday perception of death is that death is evil. Such everyday perception might seem in lack of introspection and blind but our living environment and form of life are strongly supporting this perception. This paper argues that there is reasonable cause for believing death is evil. In order to justify this argue, this paper critically supports Thomas Nagel's 'Deprivation Theory', which identifies the cause of death being in evil in the deprivation of life. This paper investigates the main substances of 'Deprivation Theory, suggests the related problems and therefore reconstitutes the main arguments of 'Deprivation Theory, resulting in the investigation of the following facts; that we cannot avoid the fate of death, but that our existence is headed towards the future, and that as independent individuals we have infinite possibilities of life. Death is natural to humanity as species, but as independent individuals death deprives us from possible life and future. Therefore, death we encounter in our living environment and form of life is evil. As species, we can agree with Epicurus and Lecretius' view, but as independent individuals we cannot share them.

A Study on Harmonized Classification and Categorization for Physical Hazards of Chemicals in Korea (국내 화학물질의 물리적위험성 분류·구분 단일화에 관한 연구)

  • Although chemical substances have greatly contributed to prosperous human life and industrial development and made a great contribution to humanity, some dangerous substances are harmful to health and the environment. Thus, so long ago developed countries have also established strict safety standards. Korea is growing into a major chemical market, accounting for 3.4% of the global chemical market. The domestic laws related to chemical substances are similar to foreign countries, but there are many differences in detail, posing a lot of risks to safety, health and the environment as well as causing many problems in industry. In order to improve these problems, this study carried out to unify the domestic chemical law and the international standardization system (GHS) and to solve the trade barriers in the export and import by industry. In addition, researchers proposed a unified approach to classification and division of physical hazards, as advanced as developed nations, as a basis for prevention and response to accidents in dangerous goods.

  • The problem of the environment is urgently coming to the world as a problem that humanity must solve. In particular, Korea is directly affected by air pollution and marine pollution due to its geopolitical position with China, and is also exposed to a great deal of pollution due to air, water, soil, and weather. In this situation, due to the disconnection between the management domain / service (system) related to the environment, the ability to quickly identify causes and cope with situations in the event of environmental pollution or disasters is weak, and duplication and investment are being faced. The development of a service platform for smart environment disaster management is designed to detect environmental disasters in an early stage through the management of smart environment disaster management at the national level, It will be a way to predict complex environmental disasters.

Group Creativity and Creative Environment by Gender of University Students (대학생의 성별에 따른 집단창의성과 창의적 환경)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out early childhood teachers' personality and analysis on the status and awareness of character education for early childhood education by grouping according to level of personality. The results show that there was significantly difference career and age. While early childhood teachers sympathize importance and need of personality education, absence of methods for practice is obstacle. A high level personality group notices that respect for early children' life, humanity and virtue of relationship is importance virtue. Therefore they consider respecting people as aim of personality education and recognize that they need to teach right values through whole area as education contents. A low level personality group notices that performance of their duty and manners of early children is needed virtue. They consider manners education as aim and content of personality education also recognize guiding with connecting home teaching is desirable. Early childhood teachers recognize that ambiguity of personality education's aim and contents, a gap between reality and ideals and absence of teachers' personality is difficulty of personality education.

Reliability of essay-writing scoring in university entrance exam (논술 채점의 신뢰도에 관한 연구)

  • Essay-writing, first introduced to Korean university entrance exams in 1994, is gaining its weight year by year. Especially from 1997 when Nationwide Education Reform System begins, it will be a key component of student selection criteria at Korean universities. Essay-writing's future, however, will not be that smooth unless it shows necessary validity and reliability. This study is on reliability of Essay-writing scoring, mainly from the experience of University K case. To secure solid reliability in Essay-writing scoring for the 1995 University Entrance Exam, the authors started research from the 1994 Autumn Pre-exam which was administred to potential applicants of University K following year. Total of 1,254 students took Essay-writing exam and, subsequently, their essays were graded by two professors independently. The result was not so good. The correlation between two scores was 0.27[0.54] with Cronbach alpha 0.43[0.70] for Humanity-Social Science [Natural Science-Engineering] field. So, some action for reliability improvement was inevitable. The authors considered and investigated following two alternatives. Alternative 1 [A1] : Essays are to be graded three tiems independently at the 1995 University K Entrance Exam. Scores will be given as the average of three scores. Alternative 2 [A2] : Essays are to be graded twice independently, followed by a possible third grading only if two gradings show "significant" defference. Scores are given as the third score if done or the average of first two scores otherwise.otherwise.
