  • A model helicopter is an unstable, multi-input multi-output nonlinear system exposed to strong disturbances and its system parameters change continually. In this paper, Time Delay Control(TDC) is adopted for these reasons. TDC uses past observation of the system's response and the control input to directly modify the control action rather than adjusting the controller gains leading to a model independent robust controller. TDC can force the plant to follow an appropriate reference model, but the reference model cannot be chosen arbitrarily. In this paper the procedure of choosing a reference model and the performance of the controller are presented.

  • As a first step toward a complete CFD-CSD coupling for helicopter rotor load analysis, the present study attempts to loosely couple a CFD code with a source-double panel method. The far-field wake effects were calculated by a time-marching free vortex wake method and were implemented into the CFD module via field velocity approach. Unlike the lifting line method, the air loads correction process is not trivial for the source-doublet panel method. The air loads correction process between the source-doublet method and CFD is newly suggested in this work and the computation results are validated against available data for well-known hovering flight conditions.

  • The three-dimensional flows in the Weis-Fogh mechanism are studied by flow visualization and numerical simulation by the vortex method. The vortex method. especially the vortex stick method, is employed to investigate the vortex structure in the wake of the two wings. The pressure is estimated by the Bernoulli equation, and the lift on the wing are also obtained. As the results the eddies near the leading edge of each wing in the fling stage take a convex shape because the eddies shed from both tips entrain the flows and the downwash in the rotating stage is deflected toward the outside because the outside tip vortex is stronger than the inside one. And the lift coefficient on the wings in this mechanism is almost independent of the Reynolds number.

  • The object of this study is in the development of the computer program to predict the performance of rotor in hovering by getting the aerodynamic load acting on blade. For this work the vortex theory was chosen among the aerodynamic theories, blade was replaced by planar vortex panels, and prescribed wake for the wake geometry was selected and then represented by vortex lattices. To get the aerodynamic load on blade, flow was assumed to be incompressible, irrotational and steady, and the surface boundary condition of inviscid flow was used as boundary condition. Then the relationships between this load and flight condition and blade geometry were examined.

  • In this paper a method for the design optimization for helicopter rotor blade in hover is studied Numerical analysis of aerodynamic characteristics of the flow around a rotor blade is analysed by usign panel method and CFD code based on Navier-Stokes equation. The result is validated by comparing with existing experimental result. Optimization methods RSM(Response Surface Method) and DOE(Design of Experiments) are applied in combination. The object functions are power, twist angle, taper ratio, and thrust. The optimized result showed a decrease of 17% of the power required.

  • This study addresses the control problem of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during the transition period when the flying mode changes from hovering to translational motion in the horizontal plane. First, we introduce a compensation algorithm that improves height stabilization and reduces altitude drop. The main principle is to incorporate pitch and roll measurements into the feedforward term of the altitude controller to provide a larger thrust force. To further improve altitude control, we propose the fuzzy logic controller that improves system behavior. Simulation results presented in the paper highlight the effectiveness of the proposed controllers.

  • A mechanism of hovering flight of small insects which is called the Weis-Fogh mechanism is applied to ship propulsion. A model of the propulsion mechanism is based on a two-dimensional model of the Weis-Fogh mechanism and consists of one or two wings in a square channel. A model ship equipped with this propulsion mechanism was made, and working tests were performed in a sea. The model ship sailed very smoothly and the moving speed of the wing was small compared with the advancing speed of the ship.

  • Rotor wake causes unsteady aerodynamics of rotor blade. So, accurate prediction of wake is very important and vortex method is good solution for this problem. Aerodynamic force of the rotor blade is calculated by potential panel method and the rotor wake is simulated by vortex particle method. The vortex particle method is easier to treat wake-body interaction and has better performance to expect the effect of ground and fuselage interaction. Rotor in hovering and forward flight condition is simulated through these methods. Thrust and surface pressure of rotor are compared with experiment data.

  • The three-dimensional flows in the Weis-Fogh mechanism are studied by flow visualization and numerical simulation by the discrete vortex method. In this mechanism, two wings open, touching their trailing edges (fling), and rotate in opposite directions in the horizontal plane. The structure of the vortex systems shed from the wings is very complicated and their effects on the forces on the wings have not yet been clarified. The discrete vortex method, especially the vortex stick method, is employed to investigate the vortex structure in the wake of the two wings. The wings are represented by lattice vortices, and the shed vortices are expressed by discrete three-dimensional vortex sticks. The vortex distributions and the velocity field are calculated. The pressure is estimated by the Bernoulli equation, and the lift on the wing are also obtained.
