  • The lightshelf system, a horizontal shading and light redirect device, should improve the visual environment by optimal light distributions and intense illumination levels of a interior. This study aims to evaluate the daylighting performance of window integrated lightshelf systems by computer simulations. For the study, the standard office plan is analyzed through the field surveys. And then, the various lightshelf types attached window systems are picked out from existed research results. The max, minimum and average illuminance levels of interiors and illuminance distributions are evaluated by Lightsacpe 3.2 programs based on the installing height, shape type and moving angle of lightshelfs. As results, it is suggested that the optimum lightshelf shapes are the height 1.8m and the width 600mm. Also, in mixed lightshelf, the outside width 600mm, inside width 400 are efficient on indoor daylighting performance.

  • A photoelectric dimming control system for a small private office space with a double skin envelope system was analyzed for the purpose of examining optimum control performances under a variety of daylight conditions. Computer simulations were performed for the three different photosensor types positioned at the center of ceiling in the space. They were applied in both a south and north-facing room. Daylight conditions were a fixed horizontal venetian blind on an external envelope and a retractable shading device on an internal envelope under a clear, intermediate and overcast sky at different times of a day and year. Partially-shielded photosensors provided good control performances providing the required electric light output under clear and intermediate sky conditions. Unshielded photosensors failed to provide necessary illuminance levels producing less electric output and fully-shielded photosensors generally provided excessive light output. Reasonable electric lighting energy savings were achieved except under overcast sky conditions where the control system did not contribute to energy savings due to the less daylight through envelopes. The retractable shading device covering 50% of the internal envelope reduced energy savings up to 19.62%, but the workplane illuminance levels were maintained within recommended ranges. The coefficients of determination between workplane illuminance and photosensor illuminance due to daylight ranged from 0.74 to 0.98. Partially-shielded conditions provided best correlations and the north-facing room yielded stronger correlation than the south-facing room.

  • This study aims to evaluate the illuminance performance of sloped light guide with automated venetian blind systems. For the purpose, a mock-up model was constructed as a prototype of Korean office building with $12.0m{\times}7.3m{\times}3.7m$ ($w{\times}d{\times}h$) and south facing side-window mounted between the clerestory window($2.0m^2$) and the view window($5.6m^2$). The light guide of 1.28m deepth and $29^{\circ}$ tilted angle, is covered with 0.6mm galvanized steel sheet and 97% reflective film. To protect the room from low solar angle, a blind systems, 0.15m deepth and $30^{\circ}$ automated slat angle was installed. To assess illuminance performance, the totally 37 measuring points for illuminance were monitored. For the detailed analysis, photometric sensors were installed at work-plane (8 points), wall (7 points), ceiling (3points), and exterior horizontal illuminance (1 point) respectively. The performance was measured under clear sky and is monitored by Agilent data logger, photometric sensor Li-cor and the Radiant Imaging ProMetric 1400. Comparisons of light factor and uniformity are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of the CIE standard on lighting environments to Korea. In the field study, horizontal and the vertical illuminance was measured at the pedestrian road in the central business district of a city, and the questionnaires were conducted to get information regarding pedestrian's satisfaction with lighting environment. Four areas were selected for this survey. That areas have different type of pedestrian roads concerning the lighting conditions and the number of walkers. From the results of the measurements, It is known that the illuminance of pedestrian roads is different according to the lighting conditions and the number of poot passengers. Also the results of questionnaires show that the illuminance of the pedestrian roads affect to the pedestrian's satisfaction. Lastly, the CIE standard on lighting environments is applicable to the central business district of the cities in Korea.

  • Fixed lighting of public ways for both drivers and pedestrians can create a nighttime environment in which people can see comfortably and can quickly and accurately identify objects on the roadway being travelled. Roadway lighting can improve traffic safety, achieve efficient traffic movement and promote the general use of the facility during darkness. The design of a roadway lighting system involves consideration of visibility, economics, esthetics, safety and environmental conditions. This paper shows estimation of horizontal illuminance and uniformity ratio by actual measurement of roadway lighting at main streets in Jejusi and evaluation of Jejusi roadway lighting conditions for modeling by computer simulation.

  • Mock-up model can be applied to measure accurate performance data but difficult to apply the variables in experiment. There can be a slight experiment errors in Scale model, but various parameters can be applied for a objective experiment. This paper aims to compare the daylighting performance in 1, 1/5, 1/10 scale model of offices and analyze the experiment errors to certificate the influence of model experiment. To analyse daylighting performance, a comparison of a Mock-up model, sized $12.0m(w){\times}7.2m(l){\times}3.7m(h)$, designed for experimentation of daylighting systems and its 1:5, 1:10 scale model. It has an identical configuration of reference room and the test room. For the test room, the lightshelf system was designed as Micro-4 reflective material. To assess work plane illuminance and light factor, photometric sensors of each room were installed at work-plane(6 points) and exterior horizontal illuminance (1 point). And luminance of window, rare of the room was measured under clear sky. It is to be monitored by Agilent data logger, photometric sensor Li-cor and the Radiant Imaging ProMetric 1400. Comparisons with a light factor, increase-decrease ratio and luminance are discussed.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the electric lighting energy consumption carried out by Daysim program. A comparison between the measurement and simulated exterior global horizontal illuminance shows differences about 10% and it is very similar to the measurement. The interior illuminance simulated by Daysim are 18.9% lower than the measurement and simulated lighting energy consumption is 10% lower than the measurement. Corrected annual lighting energy simulation results show that the best case is the combination of occupancy switch-off and dimming system with automatic controlled blinds (E-3). In case of no blinds, it occasionally derives the minimum lighting energy consumption but it causes the glare, so we need to be careful for choosing the control strategy. For the overcast sky, the lighting energy consumption is not changed significantly by control strategy while the lighting energy in the clear sky is changed noticeably. So we must know the right strategy for each case to control the electric lights and blinds.

  • As the importance of outdoor lighting become more widely recognized, outdoor lighting has been installed in many buildings, plazas, landscape, and historical monuments in Korea, Outdoor lighting on showing complex, in particular, express its values as local landmarks. However, the excessive outdoor lighting in the large-scale shopping complex tends to cause light pollution. Many advanced countries are trying to create a comfortable lighting environment by the guidlines and regulations on outdoor lighting to prevent light pollution. For this research backgrounds, the light pollution of three showing complexes in Seoul have been investigated. For the purpose, luminance of building facade, horizontal illuminance, and vertical illuminance were measured with proper measurement instruments and compared the results with the CIE recommendations. The results of the study are as follows. As no cut-off luminaries are currently installed on pedestrian walks, some glare were occured partially. It also shows that the luminance of building facades are high to improve the degree of public awareness of buildings and advertisements. In other words, the luminance of the building facade, when compared with that of the CIE recommendations, is twice as high and the vatical illuminance of pedestrian walks is far higher than that of the CIE recommendations, which proves the existence of light pollution. As Korea has not yet provided proper regulations or guidelines for the control of light pollution, it is necessary to make appropriate codes for it.
