  • Recently, as power systems become large and complicated, chaos theory has been introduced to analyze their nonlinear characteristics. In this paper, voltage collapse phenomenon is more accurately analyzed using bifurcation theory of chaos. Chaotic behaviors has been observed in computer simulation for a simple power system over a range of loading conditions. Besides existence of voltage collapse point in critical value, operation of power system in Hopf window can be the cause of voltage collapse.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study a class of delay differential equations with two delays. First, we consider the existence of periodic solutions for some delay differential equations. Second, we investigate the local stability of the zero solution of the equation by analyzing the corresponding characteristic equation of the linearized equation. The exponential stability of a perturbed delay differential system with a bounded lag is studied. Finally, by choosing one of the delays as a bifurcation parameter, we show that the equation exhibits Hopf and saddle-node bifurcations.

  • Transition to chaotic convection is investigated for natural convection of a fluid with Pr=0.1 in a wide-gap horizontal annuls. The unsteady two-dimensional stream-function-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. As the Rayleigh number is increased, the steady 'downward flow' bifurcates to a time-periodic flow with a fundamental frequency, and afterwards a period-doubling bifurcation occurs. As the Rayleigh number is increased further, the chaotic flow regime is reached after a sequence of successive Hopf bifurcation to quasi-periodic and chaotic flow regimes. The route to chaos shows the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse scenario. The flow of chaotic regime displays complex coalescence and separation of eddies in the side and lower region of the annulus.

  • A stage-structured predator-prey system with time delay and Beddington-DeAngelis functional response is considered. By analyzing the corresponding characteristic equation, the local stability of a positive equilibrium is investigated. The existence of Hopf bifurcations is established. Formulae are derived to determine the direction of bifurcations and the stability of bifurcating periodic solutions by using the normal form theory and center manifold theorem. Numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the theoretical results.

  • In this paper, we study the dynamics of a two-parameter unfolding system $\chi$' = y, y' = $\beta$y+$\alpha$f($\chi\alpha\pm\chiy$+yg($\chi$), where f($\chi$,$\alpha$) is a second order polynomial in $\chi$ and g($\chi$) is strictly nonlinear in $\chi$. We show that the higher order term yg($\chi$) in the system does not change qulitative structure of the Hopf bifurcations near the fixed points for small $\alpha$ and $\beta$ if the nontrivial fixed point approaches to the origin as $\alpha$ approaches zero.

  • Torsional oscillations of a system incorporating a Hooke's joint are investigated by adopting a nonlinear 2-degree-of-freedom model. Linear and Van der Pol transformations are applied to obtain the equations of motion to which the method of averaging can be readily applied. Various subharmonic and combination resonances are identified with the conditions of their occurrences. Applying the method of averaging leads to the reduced amplitude- and phase-equations of motion, of which constant and periodic solutions are obtained numerically. The periodic solution which emerges from Hopf bifurcation point experiences period doubling bifurcation leading to infinite solution rather than chaotic solution.

  • An epidemic model with Classical Kermack-Mckendrick incidence rate under a limited resource for treatment is proposed to understand the effect of the capacity for treatment. We have assumed that treatment function is strictly increasing function of infective individuals and becomes constant when the number of infective is very large. Existence and stability of the disease free and endemic equilibrium are investigated, boundedness of the solutions are shown. Even in this simple version of the model, backward bifurcation and multiple epidemic steady states can be observed with some sets of parameter values. Hopf-bifurcation analyses are given and numerical examples are provided to help understanding.

  • The present paper is concerned with a two-competitor/oneprey population system with Holling type-II functional response and two discrete delays. By linearizing the system at the positive equilibrium and analyzing the associated characteristic equation, the asymptotic stability of the positive equilibrium and existence of local Hopf bifurcations are investigated. Particularly, by applying the normal form theory and the center manifold reduction for functional differential equations (FDEs) explicit formulae determining the direction of bifurcations and the stability of bifurcating periodic solutions are derived. Finally, to verify our theoretical predictions, some numerical simulations are also included at the end of this paper.

  • This study investigates the oscillatory thermal convection of a fluid with Pr=0.02 in a wide-gap horizontal annulus with constant heat flux inner wall. When Pr=0.02, dual steady-state flows are not found. After the first Hopf bifurcation from a steady to a time-periodic flow, five successive period-doubling bifurcations are recorded before chaos. The power spectrum shows the $period-2^4\;and\;2^5$ flows clearly, and a window of period $3{\times}2^3$ flow is found in the chaotic regime. The approximate value of the Feigenbaum number for the last three period-doubling bifurcations is 4.76. The transition route to chaos of the present simulations is consistent with the period-doubling route of Feigenbaum.
