  • This study was carried out as basic study to apply to construction site the HPC method which is being developed. The construction cost of HPC method was analyzed in comparison with conventional method (half slab method). With regard to research method, it was decided that data on construction work carried out by half slab method was analyzed. According to the results of study, in case of being applied to the construction work using a divided column, the number of columns was decreased. So, it was shown that member production cost, and transport and assemblage cost reduced. In case of being applied to construction work using an undivided column, the analysis showed that there was little difference in construction cost. Therefore, the analysis showed that, if HPC construction method was applied to large structure using a large column, the construction cost was reduced to some extent in comparison with conventional half slab method.

  • This study is for proposing the shape of hollow and evaluating the structural performance of hollow reinforced concrete (RC) half slabs. The two-phase experimental works were carried out, and styrofoam was used for reduction of dead load and vibration. From the Phase I test result, the shape and spacing of the hollow were determined to obtain the high deduction ratio of the concrete and the desirable failure mode of the hollow RC half slabs. In the Phase II test, two slab specimens were tested in flexure to evaluate the flexural capacity of the hollow RC half slabs with the proposed hollow shape. In the result of the test, all the specimens having the proposed hollow shape showed sufficient flexural capacity.

  • Most of studies on PC method aim at the structural analysis and development of PC members, and studies on the construction management aspect are insufficient. This study is a basic research in the construction management aspect regarding 'composite method using hollow-PC column' (HPC method), and is intended to develop assessment standards for the benefit·cost analysis of HPC method. Assessment standards for the benefit·cost analysis were composed of main-factors and sub-factors through interview with 4 experts. It was possible to classify main-factors into 4 major categories, i.e,. structural performance, construction performance, construction duration and construction cost. Sub-factors were composed of factors which were of high importance in assessing the two methods. And factors judged to be repeated or of little importance were excluded.

  • Recently, a concern about hollow core precast concrete (PC) slab has been increased as a method to improve the construction ability by reducing the self weight of structures during the construction. Hollow core slab which is known as a typical PC slab in domestic construction of PC building has a problem to put shear reinforcements in the web of element during the production of element in the factory. With regard to this point, recently, tripple ribs slab (TRS) which can be said as a new type of half PC slab system was developed. In TRS, it is possible to place shear reinforcements in PC element during the production of the element in the factory. This paper presents the shear test result of TRS which was done by one point loading test under simple support condition. Test parameters are the presence of cast-in-place (CIP) concrete and the contribution of lattice bars. From the test, it was found that the TRS has sufficient shear capacity to resist the design load and its strength can be predicted by the code equations for general beam. It is recommended to ignore the strength of lattice bar in the calculation of shear strength during the construction since its contribution is too low to be considered when CIP is not casted.

  • Most of studies on PC method aim at the structural analysis and development of PC members, and studies on the construction management aspect are insufficient. Therefore, this study tries to investigate 'hallow PC column composite method(HPC composite method)' from the viewpoint of construction management and analyze the construction cost of the composite method. On the assumption that each comparative method was applied to the zone, the difference in construction cost between the two methods was analyzed. As a result, HPC composite method increased the initial investment cost because of its factor technology, but reduced transport cost, lifting cost, and installation cost through lightweight columns. This study analyzed only the difference in construction cost of HPC composite method so that it has the limitation in evaluating its economy. Therefore, to evaluate the economy of HPC composite method, it is considered to research more the construction cost of HPC composite method.

  • HPC method is developing to improve the constructability and structural performance of the existing PC method. The objective of this study is to develop construction procedures and to analysis of construction period for HPC method. In order to develop construction procedures, the building construction data of the existing half-slab method was analyzed. Analyzing design drawings and specifications of nine construction cases, a prototype of half-slab method, was drawn. Applying the core technology of HPC method to the drawn prototype of half-slab method, a prototype of HPC method, was developed. The differences of both methods were 'installing PC column' and 'placing topping concrete'. To analysis the differences of both methods, seven construction cases were analyzed. According to the analysis for HPC method, cases1 and 2 had columns divided for construction shortened about 16% of a construction period. The schedule of column assembly work was analyzed to be shortened much. That is judged to be because the use of a hollow PC column leads to a decrease in the number of columns. In particular, if HPC method is applied to a building construction site using large columns, it is analyzed to shorten a construction period more than the existing Half-slab method.

  • Prestressed hollow-core slabs (HCS) are widely used for modern lightweight precast floor structures because they are cost-efficient by reducing materials, and have excellent flexural strength and stiffness by using prestressing tendons, compared to reinforced concrete (RC) floor system. According to the recently revised ACI318-08, the web-shear capacity of HCS members exceeding 315 mm in depth without the minimum shear reinforcement should be reduced by half. It is, however, difficult to provide shear reinforcement in HCS members produced by the extrusion method due to their unique concrete casting methods, and thus, their shear design is significantly affected by the minimum shear reinforcement provision in ACI318-08. In this study, a large number of shear test data on HCS members has been collected and analyzed to examine their web-shear capacity with consideration on the minimum shear reinforcement requirement in ACI318-08. The analysis results indicates that the minimum shear reinforcement requirement for deep HCS members are too severe, and that the web-shear strength equation in ACI318-08 does not provide good estimation of shear strengths for HCS members. Thus, in this paper, a rational web-shear strength equation for HCS members was derived in a simple manner, which provides a consistent margin of safety on shear strength for the HCS members up to 500 mm deep. More shear test data would be required to apply the proposed shear strength equation for the HCS members over 500 mm in depth though.

  • The concern about hollow core PC slab has been increased to improve the workability during a construction of building by reducing self weight of structural members. In this manner, recently, TRS (Tripple Ribs Slab) was developed as a new type of half PC slab system. TRS member consists of the triple webs and the bottom flange prestressed by strands. The slab system is completed by casting of topping concrete on the TRS after filling styrofoam between the webs. This paper, presents a flexural experiment to investigate the flexural capacity of the TRS. Five full scale TRS members were made and tested under simple support condition to be failed by flexure and their strength was evaluated by code equations; the variables in the test are the depth and the presence of topping or raised spot formed when slip-forming. In addition, a nonlinear sectional analysis was performed for the specimens and the result was compared with the test results. From the study, it was found that the TRS has enough flexural strength and ductility to resist the design loads and its strength can be suitably predicted by using code equations. The raised spot did not affect the strength so that the spot need not to be removed by doing additional work. For the more accurate prediction of TRS's flexural behavior by using nonlinear sectional analysis, it is recommended to consider the concrete's brittle property due to slip-forming process in the modeling.

  • This paper presents the new Compact 2D Haar-wavelet-based MultiResolution Time-Domain method (MRTD) as an accelerating algorithm for the conventional Compact BD Finite-Difference Time-Domain method (FDTD). To validate this algorithm, we analyzed the dispersion characteristics of the hollow rectangular waveguide and dielectric slab-loaded rectangular waveguide. The results of the proposed method are very weal agreed with those of both the conventional analytic method and the Compact 2D FDTD method. The CPU time for analysis of this method is reduced to about a half of the conventional Compact 2D FDTD method. The proposed method is valuable as a fast algorithm in the research of dispersion characteristics of waveguide structures.

  • Because of the shortage of construction workers due to The rising labor costs and an aging labor force, construction time has been extended. As a solution, The construction time of high-rise buildings can be reduced by adopting precast concrete construction methods. Most relevant studies have focused on the development and structural analysis of such methods and not on their construction management. Therefore, this study focused on the construction management of the hollow precast concrete column (HPC) method. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of HPC formulations through the analytic hierarchy process and benefit-cost analysis. After a gap analysis of the available literature and expert interviews, the evaluation criteria were selected. A questionnaire survey was administered to professionals with ample experience in precast concrete construction for the pair-wise evaluation of the benefit and costs of the HPC method. The results show that the benefits of the HPC method outweighed its costs. Therefore, the HPC method is a suitable substitute for the half-slab method.
