  • Let H be a separable complex Hilbert space and L(H) be the *-algebra of all bounded linear operators on H. For $T \in L(H)$, we construct a pair of semi-positive definite operators $$ $\mid$T$\mid$_r = (T^*T)^{\frac{1}{2}} and $\mid$T$\mid$_l = (TT^*)^{\frac{1}{2}}. $$ An operator T is called a semi-hyponormal operator if $$ Q_T = $\mid$T$\mid$_r - $\mid$T$\mid$_l \geq 0. $$ In this paper, by using a technique introduced by Berberian [1], we show that the approximate point spectrum $\sigma_{ap}(T)$ of a semi-hyponomal operator T is empty.

  • Given operators X and Y acting on a Hilbert space $\cal{H}$, an interpolating operator is a bounded operator A such that AX = Y. In this article, we showed the following : Let $\cal{L}$ be a subspace lattice acting on a Hilbert space $\cal{H}$ and let X and Y be operators in $\cal{B}(\cal{H})$. Let P be the projection onto $\bar{rangeX}$. If FE = EF for every $E\in\cal{L}$, then the following are equivalent: (1) $sup\{{{\parallel}E^{\perp}Yf\parallel\atop \parallel{E}^{\perp}Xf\parallel}\;:\;f{\in}\cal{H},\;E\in\cal{L}\}\$ < $\infty$, $\bar{range\;Y}\subset\bar{range\;X}$, and < Xf, Yg >=< Yf,Xg > for any f and g in $\cal{H}$. (2) There exists a self-adjoint operator A in Alg$\cal{L}$ such that AX = Y.

  • Given operators X and Y on a Hilbert space H, an interpolating operator is a bounded operator A such that AX = Y. In this article, we investigate compact interpolation problems for vectors in a tridiagonal algebra. Let L be a subspace lattice acting on a separable complex Hilbert space H and Alg L be a tridiagonal algebra. Let X = $(x_{ij})\;and\;Y\;=\;(y_{ij})$ be operators acting on H. Then the following are equivalent: (1) There exists a compact operator A = $(x_{ij})$ in AlgL such that AX = Y. (2) There is a sequence {$\alpha_n$} in $\mathbb{C}$ such that {$\alpha_n$} converges to zero and $$y_1\;_j=\alpha_1x_1\;_j+\alpha_2x_2\;_j\;y_{2k}\;_j=\alpha_{4k-1}x_{2k\;j}\;y_{2k+1\;j}=\alpha_{4k}x_{2k\;j}+\alpha_{4k+1}x_{2k+1\;j}+\alpha_{4k+2}x_{2k+2\;j\;for\;all\;k\;\epsilon\;\mathbb{N}$$.

  • Given vectors x and y in a Hilbert space, an interpolating operator is a bounded operator T such that Tx = y. An interpolating operator for n vectors satisfies the equation $Tx_i\;:\;y_i,\;for\;i\;=\;1,\;2,\;{\cdots},\;n$. In this article, we obtained the following : $Let\;x\;=\;\{x_i\}\;and\;y=\{y_\}$ be two vectors in a separable complex Hilbert space H such that $x_i\;\neq\;0$ for all $i\;=\;1,\;2;\cdots$. Let L be a commutative subspace lattice on H. Then the following statements are equivalent. (1) $sup\;\{\frac{\$\mid${\sum_{k=1}}^l\;\alpha_{\kappa}E_{\kappa}y\$\mid$}{\$\mid${\sum_{k=1}}^l\;\alpha_{\kappa}E_{\kappa}x\$\mid$}\;:\;l\;\in\;\mathbb{N},\;\alpha_{\kappa}\;\in\;\mathbb{C}\;and\;E_{\kappa}\;\in\;L\}\;<\;\infty\;and\;$\mid$y_n\$\mid$x_n$\mid$^{-1}\;=\;1\;for\;all\;n\;=\;1,\;2,\;\cdots$. (2) There exists an operator A in AlgL such that Ax = y, A is a unitary operator and every E in L reduces, A, where AlgL is a tridiagonal algebra.

  • Let S($z_1$, $z_2$) be a power series with operator coefficients such that multiplication by 5($z_1$, $z_2$) is a contractive transformation in the Hilbert space $\mathbf{H}_2$($\mathbb{D}^2$, C). In this paper we show that there exists a Hilbert space D($\mathbb{D}$,$\bar{S}$) which is the state space of extended canonical linear system with a transfer fucntion $\bar{S}$(z).

  • Let X and Y be operators acting on a Hilbert space and let (equation omitted) be a subspace lattice of orthogonal projections on the space containing 0 and I. We investigate normal interpolation problems in Alg(equation omitted): Given operators X and Y acting on a Hilbert space, when does there exist a normal operator A in Alg(equation omitted) such that AX = Y?

  • Let L be a subspace lattice on a Hilbert space H and X and Y be operators acting on a Hilbert space H. Let P be the projection onto $\frac\;{R(X)}$, where RX is the range of X. If PE = EP for each $E\;\in\;L$, then there exists an operator A in AlgL such that AX = Y if and only if $$sup\{{\parallel}E^{\bot}Yf{\parallel}/{\parallel}E^{\bot}Xf{\parallel}\;:\;f{\in}H,\; E{\in}L}=K\;<\;\infty$$ Moreover, if the necessary condition holds, then we may choose an operator A such that AX = Y and ${\parallel}A{\parallel} = K.$ Let x and y be vectors in H and let $P_x$ be the projection onto the singlely generated space by x. If $P_xE = EP_x$ for each $E\inL$, then the assertion that there exists an operator A in AlgL such that Ax = y is equivalent to the condition $$K_0\;:\;=\;sup\{{\parallel}E^{\bot}y{\parallel}/{\parallel}E^{\bot}x\;:\;E{\in}L}=<\;\infty$$ Moreover, we may choose an operator A such that ${\parallel}A{\parallel} = K_0$ whose norm is $K_0$ under this case.

  • In this note we set forth three possible definitions of the property of "almost commuting with a compact operator" and discuss an old result of W. Arveson that says that every operator on Hilbert space has the weakest of the three properties. Finally, we discuss some recent progress on the hyperinvariant subspace problem (see the bibliography), and relate it to the concept of almost commuting with a compact operator.

  • In this paper we extend the functional principal component analysis for real-valued random functions to the case of Hilbert-space-valued functional random objects. For this, we introduce an autocovariance operator acting on the space of real-valued functions. We establish an eigendecomposition of the autocovariance operator and a Karuhnen-Loève expansion. We propose the estimators of the eigenfunctions and the functional principal component scores, and investigate the rates of convergence of the estimators to their targets. We detail the implementation of the methodology for the cases of compositional vectors and density functions, and illustrate the method by analyzing time-varying population composition data. We also discuss an extension of the methodology to multivariate cases and develop the corresponding theory.
