  • We analyze the nonlinearity of chiral media and coupled-mode theory of chiral multilayers. In first topic, second order nonlinear coupled equations are constructed and a phase matchine method is suggested. This approach can be developed to higher order nonlinearity and electric-field-induced second harmonic generation. In second topic, coupled mode equation in chiral multilayers is constructed, and solved for both codirectional coupling and contradirectional coupling. There is a previous formulation about chiral mutilayers[1] with 4$\times$4 matrix but it did not give detail results, so this approach will be compared with that.

  • This paper presents systematic study of the experimental application of a free-interfaced component mode synthesis method. In the free-interfaced component mode synthesis method, an error the to truncated higher modes and neglected ineria loadings on a component from the connected component is inherent. Also, it is difficult to directly use experimental modal data in a modal synthesis method which links experimental model to finite-element model because of many inconsistencies between experimentally obtained and analytically obtained modal vectors and missing degrees-of-freedom (DOFs) such as rotational DOFs. In order to solve these problems, three methods, the first one based on attaching auxiliary weights to the connection points, the second one utillizing the normalization of experimental modal vector, and the third one generating smoothed and expanded experimental mode shapes, are studied in this paper. Finally, the study is illustrated for a flat-plate structure by using simulated and measured experimental data.

  • In this paper, the fields of double-plane steps in rectangular waveduides are analyzed using the modified TE$_{mn}$$^{x}$ mode-matching method. The characteristics of rectangular waveguide having double-plane steps are investigated with accomdating the effects of higher-order modes generated by discontinuities. In comparison with the generalized TE$_{mn}$-TM$_{mn}$ mode analysis, the modified TE$_{mn}$$^{x}$ mode-matching method consumes less memory and CPU time and provides improved convergence behavior. The results obtained in this manner coinside with that of the TE$_{mn}$-TM$_{mn}$ mode-matching method.

  • Springing and whipping are becoming increasingly important considerations in ship design as container ships increase in size. In this study, the springing and whipping characteristics of a large container ship were investigated through a series of systematic model tests in waves. A multi-segmented hull model with a backbone was adopted for measurement of springing and whipping signals. A conversion method for extracting torsion springing and whipping is described in this paper for the case of an open-section backbone. Higher-order springing, higher-mode torsion responses, and the effects of linear and nonlinear springing in irregular waves are highlighted in the discussion.

  • A coaxial band rejection filter is designed and fabricated for a beam interacting cavity. The proposed filter has a quarter wavelength choke for the dominant mode of the cavity. The equivalent circuit of the coaxial band rejection filter is presented and the ABCD parameter os each part is derived to obtain the ABCD parameter of the entire filter. The scattering matrix was obtained from the ABCD matrix and the was simulated by MATLAB using the obtained scattering matrix. The coaxial band rejection filter structure was simulated using HFSS, and the results confirmed the simulation using the equivalent circuit was useful. The designed coaxial band rejection filter was fabricated with 6-1/8 flange. The fabricated filter was measured using a transition from 6-1/8 flange to N-type flange. The insertion loss of the fabricated filter is greater than 25 dB in the dominant mode of the cavity and less than 0.25 dB in the first higher order mode. The measurement results are in good agreement with the simulated results and meet the design specification.

  • Step discontinuities of microstrip lines are analyzed using the mode-matching technique based on the well-known waveguide model. Including higher-order modes, the generalized scattering matrices are obtained. Asymmetrical step discontinuities as well as symmetrical step discontinuities are analyzed. The resonance characteristics of microstrip patches are calculated by cascading two microstrip step discontinuities through a uniform microstrip line. Experimental results agree well with theroretical ones.

  • Utilizing self-phase modulation effects of a dispersion-shifted fiber and delay-line characteristics of two gratings, mode-locked 80 ps pulses at 1.319${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ wavelength from a Nd: YAG laser are compressed down to 2.1 ps. These pulses are further compressed down to 340 fs using higher order soliton effects in a common single mode fiber.

  • In this paper, the feedback linearization technique is used with the sliding mode control for nonlinear system. The combination of these two control techniques can be achieved by proposing a novel sliding surface which has the nonminal dynamics of the original system controlled by feedback linearization technique. The noble design of the sliding surface is based on the augmented system whose dynamics have a higher order than that of the original system. The reaching phase is removed by using an initial virtual state which makes the initial sliding function equal to zero

  • In this work, the effect of size on the axial buckling behavior of single-layered graphene sheets embedded in elastic media is studied. We incorporate Eringen's nonlocal elasticity equations into three plate theories of first order shear deformation theory, higher order shear deformation theory, and classical plate theory. The surrounding elastic media are simulated using Pasternak and Winkler foundation models and their differences are evaluated. The results obtained from different nonlocal plate theories include the values of Winkler and Pasternak modulus parameters, mode numbers, nonlocal parameter, and side lengths of square SLGSs. We show here that axial buckling behavior strongly depends on modulus and nonlocal parameters, which have different values for different mode numbers and side lengths. In addition, we show that in different nonlocal plate theories, nonlocality is more influential in first order shear deformation theory, especially in certain range of nonlocal parameters.

  • In order to analyze travel mode choice behavior, behavioral models including logit model, based on revealed preference theory, have been using easily measurable variables such as individual socioeconomic characteristics and physical attributes of travel modes. But some recent attitudinal models of travel choice behavior have implied that the negligence of individual psychological variables and individual choice constraints in travel mode choice might preclude better prediction of individual travel mode choice behavior. In this context, this study was attempted to reconstruct an attitudinal model(AM), especially focused on the decision rules in travel mode choice decision making process, consistent with the conceptual framework relating individual attitude and choice constraints to choice behavior. And to evaluate the strengths of the AM to other comparative models(logit, linear-additive, conjunctive, lexicographic model) in predicting travel mode choice bebavior, an empirical study of the mode choice in work-trip to CBD in Seoul was performed. According to the results the percent of correct prediction(PCP) derived from the AM was higher than those derived from comparative models by at least 7 to 20% in predicting travel mode choice. But each model produced a different prediction accuracy depending on market segmentation by travel modal users, individual socioeconomic characteristics, transportation system characteristics, and satisfaction levels. The finding that different groups divided by a certain criterion employ different decision rules supports the necessity of developing a choice model such as the AM combining compensatory and noncompensatory decision rules, and suggests that a proposed transportation system management plan or policy may have different effects on each group.
