  • This paper describes preliminary research conducted for developing a high-efficiency clean large cauldron using the liquid-vapor phase change heat transfer. To improve the isothermal environment of the cauldron, naphthalene and FC-40 were selected as the working fluids to operate well in the temperature range of $100-200^{\circ}C$ and used in experimental investigations of the heat transfer characteristics. A two-phase closed thermosyphon was designed and built to demonstrate the functionality of the working fluids. Startup, boiling, and condensation tests were performed, and the test results were used to examine the possibility of complementary effects of the startup and heat transfer characteristics of the two-phase closed thermosyphon using a mixture of naphthalene and FC-40.

  • A thermal barrier coating (TBC) has been widely applied to machine components working under high temperature as a thermal insulator owing to its critical financial and safety benefits to the industry. However, the nondestructive evaluation of TBC damage is not easy since sensing of the microscopic change that occurs on the TBC is required during an evaluation. We designed an eddy current probe for evaluating damage on a TBC based on the finite element method (FEM) and validated its performance through an experiment. An FEM analysis predicted the sensitivity of the probe, showing that impedance change increases as the TBC thermally degrades. In addition, the effect of the magnetic shield concentrating magnetic flux density was also observed. Finally, experimental validation showed good agreement with the simulation result.

  • The response of honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) pollination on canola yield with reference to most suitable number of bee hive need per unit area of crops in order to meet optimum pollination needs and better economic yields by comparing number of hives and yield components an experiment was conducted at Beekeeping and Hill Fruit Pests Research, Station Rawalpindi during 2017-18 in complete randomized block design with two sets of four treatments for comparison: 1 hive acre-1, 2 hives acre-1, 3 hives acre-1 and 0 hive acre-1. The hives were kept inside the experimental area. Parameters were assessed: pollination density, pollinator's diversity, agronomic and economic yield. In case of pollination density, the cumulative mean abundance bee species revealed that at 1200 hours, Apis mellifera was the most abundant and frequent visitor with a mean population of 8.69 bees/plant followed by A. dorsata (0.72), Syrphid fly (0.2) and other pollinators. Minimum bee population was observed during 1400 hours, mainly due to the closure of flowers and partially due to high temperature (>35℃). Pollinator diversity revealed that A. mellifera was the most dominant pollinator of Brassica crop with highest abundance (71%). A. dosata ranked 2nd (16%) followed by A. florea (6%) respectively.

  • In order to implement practical alternatives to proactively cope with the agricultural drought, the potential vulnerability of irrigation pumping stations to agricultural drought was quantitatively evaluated. Data for the 124 pumping stations which are correlatable to the three proxy variables, i.e. exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity was collected by the Korea Rural Community Corporation, and then standardized considering distribution of each data set. Finally, the vulnerability index was calculated by multiplying the weights determined by the expert survey. The results showed that the vulnerability index ranged from 0.709 to 0.331 and the most vulnerable pumping stations such as Judam, Wongoo and Jinahn were mostly located in Gyeongbuk province likely because of the climatological characteristics with high temperature and low rainfall around this area. In addition, it was found that the adaptive capacity was a dominant factor comparing to exposure or sensitivity proxy variables in contributing to the vulnerability. It is therefore recommended that more practical alternatives should be employed to effectively reduce the vulnerability of an individual pumping station to agricultural drought. Furthermore, the corresponding data related to adaptive capacity should be systematically organized and managed at a field level to design reliable adaptation strategies.

  • The most important factor in the structural design of ships and offshore structures operating in arctic region is ice load, which results from ice-structure interaction during the ice collision process. The mechanical properties of ice related to strength and failure, however, show very complicated aspect varying with temperature, volume fraction of brine, grain size, strain rate and etc. So it is nearly impossible to establish a perfect material model of ice satisfying all the mechanical characteristics completely. Therefore, in general, ice collision analysis was carried out by relatively simple material models considering only specific aspects of mechanical characteristics of ice and it would be the most significant cause of inevitable errors in the analysis. Especially, it is well-known that the most distinctive mechanical property of ice is high dependency on strain rate. Ice shows brittle attribute in higher strain rate while it becomes ductile in lower strain rate range. In this study, the simulation method of ice collision to ship hull using the nonlinear dynamic FE analysis was dealt with. To consider the strain rate effects of ice during ice-structural interaction, strain rate dependent constitutive model in which yield stress and hardening behaviors vary with strain rate was adopted. To reduce the huge amount of computing time, the modeling range of ice and ship structure were restricted to the confined region of interest. Under the various scenario of ice-ship hull collision, the structural behavior of hull panels and failure modes of ice were examined by nonlinear FE analysis technique.

  • Rubber compounds have a high viscoelastic property. One of the viscoelastic behaviors during profile extrusion is the swelling of extrudate, and the amount of swelling varies with operational conditions in extrusion. It is well recognized that the elastic portion in the viscoelastic property plays an important role in the extrudate swell. In this study computer simulation of the die swell at the capillary die for several rubber compounds has been performed using commercial CFD code, Polyflow. A non-linear differential viscoelastic model, Phan-Thien-Tanner (PTT) model, was used in the computer simulation. Non-isothermal behavior was considered in the calculation. Distribution of pressure, velocity and temperature in the reservoir and capillary die, and extrudate profiles were predicted through the simulation. The amount of the die swell fur the different rubber compounds was investigated for various flow rates and three types of length to diameter of the capillary die. It is concluded that the PTT model successfully represented viscoelastic behavior of rubber compounds.

  • At a time when large amounts of data are being poured out, there are many changes in software architecture or data storage patterns because of the nature of the data being written, rather more read-intensive than writing. Accordingly, in this paper, the query model of Command Query Responsibility Segmentation (CQRS) pattern separating the responsibilities of commands and queries is used to implement an efficient high-capacity data lookup system in users' requirements. This paper uses the 2018 temperature, humidity and precipitation data of the Korea Meteorological Administration Open API to store about 2.3 billion data suitable for RDBMS (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB). It also compares and analyzes the performance of systems with CQRS pattern applied from the perspective of the web server (Web Server) implemented and systems without CQRS pattern, the storage structure performance of each database, and the performance corresponding to the data processing characteristics.

  • An efficient propylene/propane separation technology is needed to obtain high-purity propylene, which is a raw material for polypropylene synthesis. Since conventional cryogenic distillation is an energy-intensive process due to the similar physicochemical properties of propylene and propane, adsorptive separation has gained considerable interest. In this study, we have computationally investigated the changes in adsorption separation performances by arbitrarily controlling the adsorption strength of open metal sites in two different types of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Through the evaluation of adsorptive separation performances in terms of working capacity, selectivity, and Adsorption Figure of Merit (AFM), we have suggested proper density and strength of adsorption sites as well as appropriate temperature condition to obtain optimal propylene/propane adsorptive separation performances.

  • The intrinsic kinetic parameters of steam-methane reforming reactions over commercial nickel-based catalyst were determined. The reaction rate equations were derived from the reaction mechanism-based Langmuir-Hinshelwood chemisorption theory. As the experimental variables for the kinetic study, the reaction temperature ranged from 630 to $750^{\circ}C$ and the steam-to-carbon ratio also varied from 2.7 to 3.5. Based on the experimental data, the efficient optimization algorithm was used to determine the intrinsic kinetic parameters due to the high-dimensional objective function. It is confirmed that the parameter estimation results showed good agreement with the experimental values. Thus, this proposed mathematical reaction model can be used as the basic information to design a catalytic reactor and to optimize operating conditions.

  • This paper has designed, fabricated, and analyzed the passive devices realized using low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) multi layer substrates by dividing into the shrinkage process and the non-shrinkage process. Using two types of ceramic materials with dielectric constant 7 or 40, we have fabricated the same shape of various elements in 2 different processes and compared the characteristics. For the substrate of dielctric constant 40, compared with the shrinkage process which has 17% shrink in the X and Y directions with 36% shrink in the Z direction, the non-shrinkage process has 43% shrink in the Z direction without shrink in the X and Y directions, so high dimensional accuracy and surface flatness can be obtained. The inductances and capacitances of the fabricated elements are estimated from measurement using empirical analysis equations of parameters and implemented as a design library. Depending on the substrate and the process, the inductance and capacitance depending on the turn number of winding and unit area have been measured, and empirical polynomials are proposed to predict element values.
