In this paper, a trench structure was fabricated by femtosecond-laser machining to eliminate thermal crosstalk in a multichannel variable optical attenuator (VOA), to prevent decreasing attenuation efficiency of the VOA. Trenches of a variety of widths and depths were fabricated on the VOA chips by femtosecond-laser processing. After the machining, attenuation according to current change was observed in each VOA chip module with trenches. As a result, we could observe high responsivity of attenuation and low power consumption, and that the heat of each channel barely influenced other channels.

The need for high-strength galvanized steel has recently increased because of the increased number of car consumers who want improved efficiency and exterior quality. High-strength galvanized steel with high corrosion resistance improves the durability of products and exterior quality. Furthermore, the gilt of zinc does not come off during machining because of the fine adhesive property of zinc. When these are welded, zinc has a lower melting temperature than iron, so zinc is more quickly vaporized than iron. Vaporized zinc can stick to electrodes, which increases spatter in welding transportation. Created spatter can enter the molten pool and develop into inner defects or blowholes and pits. Scattered spatter sticks to the product, which leads to the secondary cost of spatter removal. Therefore, in this study, comparisons of amounts of spatter generated are conducted according to the composition of shielding gas in the MIG and CMT processes to find optimal welding parameters.

-Part I- As market needs become more various, the production of smaller quantities of a wider variety of products becomes increasingly important. In addition, in order to meet demands for more efficient production, long-term unmanned factory operation is prevailing at a remarkable pace. Within this context, laser machines are gaining increasing popularity for use in applications such as cutting and welding metallic and ceramic materials. FANUC supplies four models of $CO_2$ laser oscillators with laser power ranging from 1.5㎾ to 6㎾ on an OEM basis to machine tool builders. However, FANUC has been requested to produce laser oscillators that allow more compact and lower-cost laser machines to be built. To meet such demands, FANUC has developed six models of Slab type YAG laser oscillators with output power ranging from 150W to 2㎾. These oscillators are designed mainly fur cutting and welding sheet metals. The oscillator has an exceptionally superior laser beam quality compared to conventional YAG laser oscillators, thus providing significantly improved machining capability. In addition, the laser beam of the oscillator can be efficiently transmitted through quartz optical fibers, enabling laser machines to be simplified and made more compact. This paper introduces the features of FANUC’s developed Slab type YAG laser oscillators and their applications. - Part II - All-solid-state lasers employing laser diodes (LD) as a source of pumping solid-state laser feature high efficiency, compactness, and high reliability. Thus, they are expected to provide a new generation of processing tools in various fields, especially in automobile and aircraft industries where great hopes are being placed on laser welding technology for steel plates and aluminum materials for which a significant growth in demand is expected. Also, in power plants, it is hoped that reliability and safety will be improved by using the laser welding technology. As in the above, the advent of high-power all-solid-state lasers may not only bring a great technological innovation to existing industry, but also create new industry. This is the background for this project, which has set its sights on the development of high-power, all-solid-state lasers with an average output of over 10㎾, an oscillation efficiency of over 20%, and a laser head volume of below 0.05㎥. FANUC Ltd. is responsible for the research and development of slab type lasers, and TOSHIBA Corp. far rod type lasers. By pumping slab type Nd: YAG crystal and by using quasi-continuous wave (QCW) type LD stacks, FANUC has already obtained an average output power of 1.7㎾, an optical conversion efficiency of 42%, and an electro-optical conversion efficiency of 16%. These conversion efficiencies are the best results the world has ever seen in the field of high-power all-solid-state lasers. TOSHIBA Corp. has also obtained an output power of 1.2㎾, an optical conversion efficiency of 30%, and an electro-optical conversion efficiency of 12%, by pumping the rod type Nd: YAG crystal by continuous wave (CW) type LD stacks. The laser power achieved by TOSHIBA Corp. is also a new world record in the field of rod type all-solid-state lasers. This report provides details of the above results and some information on future development plans.

Fresnel lens is a kind of refractive optical lens with various advantages. It has nearly flat shaped optical lens that has small mass. Fresnel lens has number of applications in the compact optical systems. Recently, demands of high quality Fresnel lens for small size optical systems such as illumination units, compact imaging systems, display units, information storage systems, optical detecting units had increased rapidly. Conventional manufacturing process of high quality Fresnel lens is direct machining. However, it is not suitable for mass production because of high cost and long cycle time. Replication method can provide cost effective mass production process. However, there are various issues about replication of Fresnel lens. Fresnel lens has number of sharp blade shape prism. In the replication process, this blade shape causes defects that can affect optical efficiency. In this study, replication processes; injection molding process and UV imprinting process, were developed and evaluated using Fresnel lens that has maximum pattern height of $250\;{\mu}m$ and aspect ratio of 1.5.

This paper described on the effect of residual stocks in internal grinding of tungsten carbide materials in order to improve the grinding efficiency as well as grinding accuracy. Though the fundamental investigation is carried out for tungsten carbide materials using electroplated diamond wheel, the residual stock after grinding process is effective to the grinding effciiency. The obtained results are as follows: (1) Under the depth of cut(t) is constant and decreasing the workpiece velocity(Vw), the resiudal stock after grinding is increased, but the difference is little less than the difference by table speed. (2) Increasing the wheel velocity, the residual stock after grinding is decreased. Therefore in order to minimize the residual stock, the wheel velocity should be increased as far as possible. (3) The surface foughness and out-of roundness increased with depth of cut and table speed, and decreased with wheel velocity, but it may as well adopt as much as polssible under the dimensional tolerance which is required for high efficiency grinding. (4) In order to remove residual stock, the spark-out grinding shoule be done, and it also can be improved about 20 .approx. 25% throughout spark-out grinding, and the number of optimal spark-out times were within 10 times.
In order to reduce the weight of parts and materials for the development of high-efficiency engines in accordance with the strengthening of automobile fuel efficiency regulations, the existing casting material is changed to a iron plate material, and plastic processing and turning operations are performed to lighten the weight and reduce the manufacturing cost. Among the pulley components applied to the damper pulley, the HUB product was manufactured by plastic machining instead of the existing casting process, and the inspection standardized for automating the inner diameter and parallelism measurement of the turning result of the new hub part with improved quality, and the inspection system for this Development of design and operation software to automate the inspection of the inner diameter and parallelism of the hub was described. The representative specifications of the development equipment are a hub inner diameter 22mm inspection system, a three-point inspection system with a parallelism of 0.15mm on the top.
This study has been focused on an effective surface finishing method combining ELID (ELectrolytic In-process Dressing) and MAP (Magnetic Assisted Polishing) for the nano-precision mirror grinding of glass-lens molding mould. ELID grinding is an excellent technique for mirror grinding of various advanced metallic or nonmetallic materials. A polishing process is also required for elimination of scratches present on ELID grinded surfaces. MAP has been used as polishing method due to its high polishing efficiency and superior surface quality. It also presents some techniques for achieving the nanometer roughness of the hard material such as WC-Co, which are extensively used in precision tooling material.

The finishing process for dies and molds is an important process because it has influence on final quality of products. And it is difficult to automatize finishing process so that the process has depended on expert's skill until now. However, recently a study on development of die automatic finishing machine has been progressed, and actually this machine is applied to fabrication of die. But the research about tooling system is not enough and finishing tool must have high machining efficiency and adaptability of curved surface. So, this study investigated the application of conductive elastic tool which is composed of metal-resin bonded pellet and elastic backing material. The metal-resin bonded pellet is used to finish the surface by conventional mechanical grinding or electro-chemial grinding method. And elastic backing material is used to follow the curved surface. So conductive elastic tool has long lifetime, uniform removal rate and adaptability of curved surface.

Photochemical and photothermal effects have correlation with each other and depend on laser wavelength. Multi-scanning laser ablation process of polymer with DPSS(Diode Pumped Solid State) 3rd harmonic Nd:YVO$_4$ laser with wavelength of 355nm is applied to fabricate three-dimensional micro shape. The DPSSL photomachining system can rapidly and cheaply fabricate 2D pattern or 3D shape with high efficiency because we only use CAD/CAM software and precision stages instead of complex projection mask. Photomachinability of polymer is highly influenced by laser wavelength and its own chemical structure. So the optical characteristics of polymers for 355nm laser source is investigated by experimentally and theoretically.

Diamond wheels with fine grains and multi-porous structures are newely trial developed for smoothing and mirror finishing materials. Grinding wheel must have performed both to remove tool marks efficienitly and to contact elastically with curved surfaces, that are employed for ultra precision and high performance grinding of difficult-to materials such as tungsten carbide alloy using tool and die materials, Diamond grains are bonded by a melamine resin to prevent the decrease of machining efficiency due to grain sinking within the bond materials. Also, highly foamed structures are developed to increase the flexibility of the grinding wheel, and to induce self-sharpening by increasing contact pressure between the grinding wheel and workpiece surfaces. In this paper, melamine-bonded diamond wheels try to manufacture, then the forming method of grinding wheel are suggested, and the grinding characteristics of melamine-bonded diamond grinding wheel are also illustrated.
