  • Valves, which are used to supply or block the flow of cryogenic pressurant in the pressurization system of liquid-propellant propulsion system in a launch vehicle, are pneumo-actuated valve, solenoid valve, pyro-valve, etc. Both pneumo-actuated valve and solenoid valve have more complex structure and are heavier than pyro-valve. For this study, a couple of pyro-valves, which are applicable to cryogenic and high-pressure fluid (cryogenic gaseous helium), have a simple structure, and are comparably light, are designed, manufactured, and tested (proof-pressure/leakage tests, performance test, vibration test, helium supply tests).

Inactivation of Microorganisms and Enzymes in Foxtail Millet Takju by High Hydrostatic Pressure Treatment (초고압 처리에 의한 좁쌀탁주의 미생물 살균 및 효소 불활성화)

  • High hydrostatic pressure was applied to Foxtail Millet Takju to investigate the effects of high pressure on inactivation of microorganisms and enzymes. Total bacteria, lactic acid bacteria and yeast in untreated Takju were $6.8{\times}10^7,\;1.3{\times}10^8\;and\;8.4{\times}10^7\;CFU/mL$, respectively. Total bacterial count in Takju reduced to $2.2{\times}10^5\;CFU/mL$, while lactic acid bacteria and yeast were sterilized completely when heated at $65^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Lactic acid bacteria and yeast decreased with the increase of treatment pressure, and pressurization of 400 MPa for 10 min at room temperature sterilized completely the lactic acid bacteria and yeast in Takju. Total bacteria were not sterilized with pressurization of even 600 MPa at room temperature. Total bacteria were completely sterilized at $66^{\circ}C/400\;MPa/60\;min\;and\;66^{\circ}C/600\;MPa/10\;min$. Pressurization of Takju caused a partial inactivation of ${\alpha}-amylase$, and after pressurization at 600 MPa for 10 min at room temperature, 73.2% of the original activity remained. The activity of glucoamylase increased with the increase of treatment pressure. Treatment at $66^{\circ}C/400\;MPa/10\;min$ reduced the activity of ${\alpha}-amylase$ by 59.7% and glucoamylase by 20.5%. ${\alpha}-Amylase$ was inactivated to less than 1.2% of the original activity at $66^{\circ}C/600\;MPa/30\;min$.

Effects of High Pressure on pH, Water-binding Capacity and Textural Properties of Pork Muscle Gels Containing Various Levels of Sodium Alginate

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of sodium alginate (SA) and pressurization levels on pH, water-binding and textural properties of pork muscle gels (PMG) containing salt. Ground lean pork with 1.0% NaCl and a given amount of SA (0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0%, respectively), was pressurized to 100, 200 or 300 MPa and subsequently gelled by heating. Results showed that addition of SA into pork muscle enhanced water-holding capacity (WHC) of PMG (p<0.05) as SA increased from 0.25% to 1.0%, with pH slightly increased (p>0.05). A decrease (p<0.05) was observed in all textural parameters (hardness, cohesiveness, springiness and chewiness). Pressurization had no effect on the tendency of WHC to increase or the decrease of the textural parameters. However, the effectiveness of pressurization to enhance textural properties of PMG was significant at some SA levels, especially ${\geq}200MPa$ and at ${\leq}0.75%$ SA levels. Different combinations of pressure and SA levels could bring about variation in textural properties of PMG while SA enhanced WHC of pork muscle. The multiformity of the texture will open up a wide range of technological possibilities for the manufacture of pork-based restructured low-fat products.

Developing the Construction Guideline for ZEB Based on Air-tightness of Public Buildings in Korea (국내 비주거용 건물의 기밀성능 측정 결과를 통한 기밀 시공 가이드라인 개발)

  • Since the design Standard for Energy Conservation in Building was implemented in 2008 for the first time, building elements such as window and door should satisfy the minimum criteria to apply for a building. Though its regulation does not cover the whole building yet, recent demand to reduce energy consumption in building sector grows rapidly year by year and also draws a lot of interest to ensure the whole building level. For example, a Zero energy building, one of low-energy buildings, requires a customized solution to resolve the air leakage issue to meet the standards in achieving the high level of air tightness. In this study, six non-residential buildings were tested by fan pressurization method to observe the air tightness of whole building to suggest the construction guideline for air tightness of low-energy building. Five out of six tested buildings showed 0.27 to 1.16 h-1 of number of air changes except one community center. These buildings were carefully constructed not only for building planning but also for parts where there was a concern of air leakage, thereby securing high levels of air-tightness. The construction skills were developed as a checklist to manage and supervise the construction site. It is our suggestion to use this checklist at construction sites for ZEB with the high level of air-tightness.

The Numerical Simulation of the Pressure wave for G7 Test Train in the Tunnel (G7 시제 차량의 터널내부 압력파에 대한 수치 해석)

  • A numerical simulation has been performed to estimate the transient pressure variation in the tunnel when G7 test train passes through the test tunnel in the Kyoeng-Bu high-speed railway. A modified patched grid scheme is developed to handle the relative motion between a train and a tunnel. Also, a hybrid dimensional approach is proposed to calculate the train-tunnel interaction problem efficiently. An axi-symmetric unsteady Euler solve using the Roe's FDS is used for analyzing a complicated pressure field in tunnel during the test train is passing through the tunnel. Usually, this complex phenomenon depends ell the train speed, train length, tunnel length, blockage ratio between train and tunnel cross-sectional area, relative position between train and tunnel, etc. Therefore, numerical simulation should be done carefully in consideration of these factors. Numerical results in this study would be good guidance to make test plans, test equipments selection and to decide their measuring locations. They will also supply important information to the pressurization equipment for high-speed train.

  • Atmospheric pressure in a tunnel rises in proportion to the square of train’s speed as it enters a tunnel. This pressure difference propagates into the train and cause aural discomfort to the passengers. In order to alleviate the aural discomfort of them. a new ventilation system has been designed and tested. This system controls the charged and discharged by flow rate by detecting the air pressure generated outside and inside of the train. Test to confirm the fundamental performance of the system was carried out. Consequently, this system was found to be able to alleviate the aural discomfort effectively. Application of the system to TGV-K running in the speed range of 350km/h is considered to have good propospect.

  • In this study, we developed a pressing device which can reproduce the pressure of concrete inside the conveying pipe as a part of the basic study to development of high fluidity concrete under high pressure pumping. Using this pressing device, we evaluated a absorption properties of aggregate that are crushed coarse aggregate, river gravel and lightweight coarse aggregate according to pressure of coarse aggregate and aggregate inside a high fluidity concrete, focused on the reduction of unit water quantity by pressure. In addition, it was evaluated the compressive strength of high fluidity concrete about before and after of pressive. Test a result, case of condition under the high pressure of 250 bar, absorption ratio of crushed coarse aggregate and river gravel were not increased above the surface absorption, absorption ratio of lightweight coarse aggregate was increased than the surface absorption.

Numerical Study on Air Egress Velocity of Ancillary Room Pressurization Systems in Apartment Fires (공동주택 화재 시 부속실 가압 시스템의 방연풍속에 관한 수치해석적 연구)

  • In this study, numerical simulations were performed on the air egress velocity of pressurization systems in an ancillary room when a fire occurred in an apartment house. The relationship between the air supply flow rate of a damper and air egress velocity at a fire door is predicted to be linear. Additionally, a minimum flow rate of the damper, which meets national fire safety standards for air egress velocity, i.e., 0.7 m/s can be estimated. Air egress velocity at the fire door is analyzed according to the supply air direction and installation height of the damper. When the damper has an upward supply air direction and is installed at a high level, the egress velocity at the top section of the fire door is larger, whereas the soot concentration at the ancillary room is lower than when the supply direction of the damper is downward. Therefore, it is found that increasing the air egress velocity at the top section of the fire door helps to efficiently prevent the inflow of smoke.

Burst Behavior for Mechanically Machined Axial Flaws of Steam Generator Tubings

  • It has been reported that some events of a rupture of seam generator tube have occurred in nuclear power plants around the world. Main causes of the leakage are from various types of corrosion in the steam generator(SG) tubings. Primary water stress corrosion cracking(PWSCC) of steam generator tubings have occurred in many tubes in Korean plant, and they were repaired using sleeves or plugs, In order to develop proper repair criteria, it is necessary to ascertain the leak behavior of the tubings. A high pressure leak and burst testing system was manufactured. Various types of Electro Discharged Machined (EDM) notches were developed on the SG tubes. Leak rate and burst pressure were measured on the tubes at room temperature. Burst pressure of the part through wall defected tubes depends on the defect depth, Water flow rates after the burst were independent of the t1aw types; tubes having 20 to 60 mm long EDM notches showed similar flow rates regardless of the defect depth. A fast pressurization rate gave the tube a lower burst pressure than the case of a slow pressurization.
