Purpose: This study aims to understand if heterogeneous news is evenly consumed and distributed on portals as it examines people's news use and engagement behaviors and news credibility. Focusing on the four behaviors of news use, i.e., viewing news by keyword search, viewing news from subscribed sources, viewing news from the list of most-viewed news, and reading comments, and the three behaviors of news engagement, i.e., sharing news, 'liking' or 'recommending' news, and posting comments, this study investigates the relation between each of the behaviors and portal news credibility. Research design, data and methodology: From 2022 News Audience Survey in Korea, this study conducts a regression analysis to investigate the relations between each behavior and news credibility. Results: The results show a positive relation for the former two news use behaviors and the latter two news engagement behaviors, and a negative relation for the latter two news use behaviors. Conclusions: The positive relations between active news use and engagement behaviors and portal news credibility indicate that news consumers are more likely to use and engage in attitude-consistent news rather than attitude-challenging news, implying that heterogeneous news is less likely to be consumed and distributed evenly on portals across all news users.
This paper deals with the analysis of rock slope stability using the distinct element method. This method consists in analysis of the interaction of discrete block assemblage delimited by elementary joints, which permits to consider the heterogeneous, anisotropic and discontinuous features of the rock mass. In particular, we were able to show that this method, and especially the BRIG3D software, is an outstanding tool which gives informations of greatest interest in order to analyze the toppling mechanisms. We have confirmed the fundamental role of the rock mass structure with different simulations. In the case of toppling phenomena, the essential parameter is the dip of major discontinuities. It has an influence on the intensity and volume of deformations. The anisotropic and heterogeneous features of the rock mass play also an important role. It is proved by insertion of thick rock bars in the structure or varying rock block sizes in the mass. These models modified considerably the stress distribution and the deformation distribution. Finally, we have analyzed the influence of mechanical parameters such as friction angle and tangential stiffness.

Performance enhancement is one of the most important issues in high performance distributed computing systems. In such computing systems, online users submit their jobs anytime and anywhere to a set of dynamic resources. Jobs arrival and processes execution times are stochastic. The performance of a distributed computing system can be improved by using an effective load balancing strategy to redistribute the user tasks among computing resources for efficient utilization. This paper presents a multi-class load balancing strategy that balances different classes of user tasks on multiple heterogeneous computing nodes to minimize the per-class mean response time. For a wide range of system parameters, the performance of the proposed multi-class load balancing strategy is compared with that of the random distribution load balancing, and uniform distribution load balancing strategies using simulation. The results show that, the proposed strategy outperforms the other two studied strategies in terms of average task response time, and average computing nodes utilization.

This paper considers an integrated inventory-distribution system with a fleet of heterogeneous vehicles employed where a single warehouse distributes a single type of products to many spatially distributed retailers to satisfy their dynamic demands and the product is provided to the warehouse via procurement ordering from any manufacturing plant or market The Problem is formulated as an Mixed Integer Programming with the objective function of minimizing the sum of inventory holding cost (at the warehouse and retailers), and transportation cost and procurement ordering cost at the warehouse, subject to inventory-balancing constraints, ordering constraints, vehicle capacity constraints and transportation time constraints. The problem is Proven to be NP-hard. Accordingly, a Lagrangean heuristic procedure is derived and tested for its effectiveness through computational experiments with some numerical instances.

Multi-server Markovian retrial model with heterogeneous servers is analyzed. Arriving customers constitute the MMAP(Marked Markovian Arrival Process). Distribution of the primary customers among the servers is performed randomly depending on the type of a customer and the number of the server. Customers from the orbit have the exponential service time distribution with a parameter depending on the server only. The choice of the server for a retrial is made randomly as well. Multidimensional continuous time Markov chain describing operation of the model is investigated by means of reducing to asymptotically quasi-toeplitz Markov chaius.

Fracture toughness of heterogeneous brittle materials such as poly crystalline ceramics used to present the size (thickness) effect as well as statistically distributed results. There is belief that both(size effect and scatter) must be associated with each other. However, no generally accepted theory has been established so far. Using statistical approach, a probabilistic modeling for the fracture toughness which describes the thickness effect was attempted in this paper, Weibull distribution of specific fracture energy(SFE)at local areas and Griffith criterion are applied to the model. In addition, the newly developed model was verified with experimental results of alumina.
The clustering environment with heterogeneous workstations provides the cost effectiveness and usability for executing applications in parallel. The load balancing is considered as a necessary feature for the clustering of heterogeneous workstations to minimize the turnaround time. Since each workstation may have different users, groups. requests for different tasks, and different processing power, the capability of each processing unit is relative to the others' unit in the clustering environment Previous works is a static approach which assign a predetermined weight for the processing capability of each workstation or a dynamic approach which executes a benchmark program to get relative processing capability of each workstation. The execution of the benchmark program, which has nothing to do with the application being executed, consumes the computation time and the overall turnaround time is delayed. In this paper, we present an efficient task distribution method and implementation of load balancing system for the clustering environment with heterogeneous workstations. Turnaround time of the methods presented in this paper is compared with the method without load balancing as well as with the method load balancing with performance evaluation program. The experimental results show that our methods outperform all the other methods that we compared.

As more mobile devices are equipped with multi-core CPUs and are required to execute many compute-intensive multimedia applications, it is important to optimize the systems, considering the underlying parallel hardware architecture. In this paper, we implement and optimize ray-tracing application tailored to a given mobile computing platform with multiple heterogeneous processing elements. In this paper, a lightweight ray-tracing application is specified and implemented in Kahn process network (KPN) model-of-computation, which is known to be suitable for the description of real-time applications. We take an open-source C/C++ implementation of ray-tracing and adapt it to KPN description in the Distributed Application Layer framework. Then, several possible configurations are evaluated in the target mobile computing platform (Exynos 5422), where eight heterogeneous ARM cores are integrated. We derive the optimal degree of parallelism and a suitable distribution of the replicated tasks tailored to the target architecture.
Frailty estimates from the proportional hazards frailty model often lead us to conjecture the heterogeneity in frailty such that the variance of the frailty varies over different covariate groups (e.g. male group versus female group). For such systematic heterogeneity in frailty, we consider a regression model for the variance components in the proportional hazards frailty model, denoted by the MLFM. However, in many cases, the observed data do not show any statistically significant preference between the homogeneous frailty model and the heterogeneous frailty model. In this paper, we propose a Bayesian model averaging procedure with the reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo which selects the appropriate model automatically. The resulting regression coefficient estimate ignores the model uncertainty from the frailty distribution in view of Bayesian model averaging (Hoeting et al., 1999). Finally, the proposed model and the estimation procedure are illustrated through the analysis of the kidney infection data in McGilchrist and Aisbett (1991) and a simulation study is implemented.
