  • Purpose : Sasang Constitutional Medicine explains the pathology peculiar to constitution and suggests treatment for each constitution. In Sasang Constitutional Medicine hwnan beings are classified on four groups; Taeyangin, Taeumin, 5oyangin, Soeumin. These four constitution has their's own symptoms and treatments. In treatment, control of mind inclination, that is to say, moderation takes a very important role. But the study on heredity in Sasang Constitutional Medicine has not done not biological study but also statistical study. So we used several statistical methods and analyzed 163 samples. Methods : We implemented Fishers exact test for adjusting chi-squared test, kappa coefficient to estimate agreement of parent's and children's constitutions, and finally plotted bi-plot using correspondence analysis. Results : From Fisher's exact test result, we could know that parent's and children'S constitution's distribution had significant difference. In kappa coefficient, mother and daughter's estimated value produced highest result. In correspondence analysis we only plotted the case of mother and son for easy interpretation. Conclusion : In the study of heredity of SaSang constitution, we cannot know exactly the heredity of constitution in terms of biology or genetics. But this research can be helpful for further analysis, that is, a study of biological or genetical aspects. And we could conclude that in statistical aspects the heredity in SaSang constitution is meaningful.

  • The purpose of this study was to establish objectives for ninth grade studies of heredity and evolution in middle school in an attempt to foster students' consciousness of bioethics, and it's additionally intended to develop and apply lesson plans handling different points at issue and to determine the effects of the lesson plans on the bioethics of middle school students. The subjects in this study were 152 ninth graders in a middle school, whose science scores were similar. An experimental group and a control group were made up of 76 students respectively, and a pretest was conducted with test paper developed by this researcher to assess their awareness of bioethics. The experimental group took lessons by using the teaching plans prepared in this study, and the control group received typical education according to the curriculum. And then a posttest was implemented with test paper developed in this study to compare the two groups. In addition their science grades were compared as well. The findings of the study were as follows: First, seven learning objectives were selected from three units related to bioethics in the third-year 8th category of heredity and evolution of middle school. Second, in order to attain the selected learning objectives, four session lesson plans were prepared. Third, the experimental group that studied using by the lesson plans made better progress in bioethics awareness and the gap between the two was statistically significant(t=6.61, p<.001). The former were ahead of the latter in consciousness about species equity(t=7.71, p<.001), the dignity of life (t=3.78, p<.001), human rights(t=2.99, p<.01) and equity among generations(t=2.66, p<.01), but not in awareness of the diversity of species. Fourth, there was no significant gap in science scores between the students studied according to the curriculum and those who received instructions by using the lesson plans developed in the study.

  • The sasang constitutional medicine has been believed to be inherited. To ensure the heredity of sasang constitution and to look into the heredity pattern, we statistically analyzed constitutional relationship between parents and their children, using 173 clinical data couples registered to SCIB(Sasang Constitution Information Bank). The following results are obtained: The sasang constitution can be believed to be inherited, because the constitutions of children, whose parents have same constitutions, are mostly the same as their parents'. And it seems that one constitution is predominant to the other according to combinations of constitutions because constitution ratio of children are uniformly 2 to 1 in case the constitutions of parents are not same. Also it was confirmed that any sex of parents is not predominant by Chi-square test.

  • The purpose of this paper was to investigated to the relationship between longevity and Sasang Constitution. The investigation of this paper is composed of 4 parts. First part is investigated to the distribution of sex constitution and constitutional form. Second part is the distribution of the special of body quality(blood pressure, Pulse, Respiration, heredity, stool frequency) and the disease. Third part is the relation of the longevity reason(diet, alcohol intake, smoking). Fourth part is the relationship between the QSCC II and longevity reason. The results were as follows : 1. In case of a macrobian, Soyangin is much more in constitution. 2. A macrobian is generally short and thin. 3. About the macrobian's strength of heredity, there is no any meaningful conclusion, but more studying relationship between heredity and longevity is needed. 4. A macrobian has normal condition in blood pressure, pulse and feces condition. 5. In case of macrobian, the portion of a light eater, non-smoker, and abstainer is high, they like warm food. 6. A macrobian who is active and diligent has high accomplishment and good sociality. Considering above conclusion, a macrobian is related to Soyangin in characteristic of constitution. In the future, more studying is needed whether the macrobian has kept their lives with their unique preservation of health or not.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the characteristics of human constitution adapting to environment. Human constitution adapting to climate zone is basically classified into four types: The $Af^{\ominus}$ constitution adapting to warm-humid climate, the $Aw^{\ominus}$ constitution adapting to warm-arid climate, the $Dw^{\oplus}$ constitution adapting to cold-arid climate and the $Df^{\oplus}$ constitution adapting to cold-humid climate. The ${\ominus}constitution$ can be changed into a ${\oplus}constitution$ by adapting to cold climate or by heredity combination with the ${\oplus}constitution$. The ${\oplus}constitution$ can be changed into a ${\ominus}constitution$ by adapting to warm climate or by heredity combination with the ${\ominus}constitution$. The four constitution types consequently can be classified into eight types: The $Af^{\ominus}$ constitution, the $Af^{\oplus}$ constitution, the $Aw^{\ominus}$ constitution, the $Aw^{\oplus}$ constitution, the $Dw^{\oplus}$ constitution, the $Dw^{\ominus}$ constitution, the $Df^{\oplus}$ constitution and the $Df^{\ominus}$ constitution. This study investigated the characteristics of fingers of people with these constitutions and confirmed that the fingers of the ${\ominus}constitution$ man are longer, slender and cooler than the fingers of the ${\oplus}constitution$ man.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of Semantic Network Program (SNP) instruction on learning achievement and motivation in high school biology classes. For this study, a SNP was designed by applying the recommendations in regard to student attention and satisfaction factors in Keller's ARCS theory. SNP instruction was conducted with an experimental group and a control group, each consisting of 62 high school biology class student. A pretest-posttest control group design was employed. The pre-test was used to analyze the learning achievement test, learning motivation test, and semantic forming test. For 4 weeks the experiment group was instructed using the developed SNP which centered on Keller's attention and satisfaction factors, and the control group was instructed via teacher-centered lectures based on the textbook. It was found that SNP instruction efficiently increased students' biology learning achievement (p<.001). It was also discovered that SNP instruction was effective in increasing Keller's motivation strategies on attention and satisfaction factors (p<.001). In addition, SNP instruction positively affected students' semantic formation (p<.001) and learning content retention (p>.05) in the heredity unit by aiding students in the area of active multimedia learning. An in depth interview with students in the class using SNP instruction showed that material learned via this method in biology had longer retention of problem-solving methods. Consequently, SNP instruction according to motivation strategies may high school biology teachers with meaningful teaching-learning methods strategies for the unit on heredity.

  • Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the awareness of breast cancer risk factors among female university students in 24 low, middle income and emerging economy countries. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 10,242 undergraduate university students (mean age 20.7, SD=2.9) from 25 universities in 24 countries across Asia, Africa and the Americas. Using anonymous questionnaires the awareness of links between breast cancer and heredity, diet, overweight, exercise, alcohol use, smoking and stress was assessed. Results indicated that 35.4% of the women were not aware that any of these risk factors could influence breast cancer, 43.8% were aware of a genetic link, and only 12.5%, 10.9% and 10.6% correctly identified alcohol use, overweight and physical inactivity, respectively, as factors causing breast cancer. Moreover, 13.3% rated dietary fat and 11.5% fibre as influencing breast cancer; both low-fat and high-fibre diets may be weakly protective against breast cancer, and smoking (19.4%) and stress (13.5%), the most commonly chosen breast cancer lifestyle risk factors, have less clear impact on breast cancer. There were marked country differences, e.g., in regards of being aware of genetic causes of breast cancer risk in female students from Ivory Coast, India, Madagascar, Nigeria and Laos below 30% and female students from Pakistan, Singapore, Turkey, Grenada and Philippines 60 or more percent. This study provides insight in the breast cancer risk perception of young women, which can be utilized in breast cancer awareness and prevention programmes.

  • Chestnut blight disease caused by Cryphonectria parasitica is widely distributed throughout chestnut tree plantations in Korea. We surveyed 65 sites located at 9 provinces in South Korea, and isolated 248 virulent and 3 hypovirulent strains of chestnut blight fungus. Hypovirulent strains had dsRNA virus in the cytoplasm, which is one of the typical characteristics of hypovirulent strains. In addition, they showed more characteristics of hypovirulent strains, i.e., suppressed conidiation, reduced pigmentation in colony color, and reduced phenol oxidase activity as well as reduced pathogenicity. Hypovirulent strains, KCPH-22, KCPH-135 and KCPH-136, had a genomic dsRNA band with the molecular weight of 12.7 kb, which is the L-dsRNA of CHV1. They also had a 2.7 kb defective dsRNA band. Single conidia isolated from hypovirulent strains were cultured and various phenotypes and absence of dsRNA bands were obtained from single conidial cultures, which means that hypovirulence transmission is unstable in asexual reproduction and variations in viral heredity by asexual reproduction. Biocontrol trial using hypovirulent strains was also carried out in the chestnut tree plantations, and canker expansion in the treated trees was stopped and healed by callus formation at the margin of the canker. These results show the potentials in successful biocontrol of chestnut blight if the vegetatively compatible hypovirulent strains could be directly used around the canker formed by compatible virulent strains.
