  • Although the industrial society gained people with material wealth, they were panic-stricken, felt in lack of everything, not to mention how fast the environment was destroyed. In the midst of this social flow, more and more people who became aware of the problems of the industrial society began to crave happy and beautiful lives through the combination of mental and physical health. This resulted in a new lifestyle called 'well-being'. Lohas, which has become a prominent figure through deep thoughts on social well-being is beyond the persuation of an individual's health and quality of life. Not only does Lohas propose a lifestyle for the mental and physical health of an individual, it also proposes sustainable consumption without hurting the world or the environment. The appearance of the Lohas provided an opportunity not only for people to look in a different aspect on the problems of pollution and ecosystem but to develop and design different products accordingly. Through furniture designs with the idea of lifestyles of health and sustainability applied, this thesis analyses how the main concept of the 3R-Recycle, Reuse, and Reduce is being applied and put to use productively in furniture design.

Therefore, I have drawn the elders' needs by investigating their characteristics through literature research and used such needs as a frame of analysis to analyze the bathroom furniture and products made in Korea and foreign countries. The analysis results indicate:First, the elders need entertainment, health care, environment-friendly, convenience, good accessibility, chair-based bath and space separation; second, both Korean-made and foreign-made bathroom products are difficult to be controlled, invisible of font, hard to sustain the elders' bodies, inconvenient to be used and etc; and third, the design to solve such problems should be with intuitive user interface, easy control, better accessibility, the elders' moving patterns and living habits considered, health care, pro-environmental product. This study puts emphasis on the reflection of socio-cultural characteristics in designing bathroom furniture & items for aging society and requires more bathroom products with various designs in the foreseeable future.

At the same time, eco-friendliness begins enjoying more attention for health and well-being reasons. Which is more important between functionality and eco-friendliness is a matter of personal taste and judgement. But eco-friendliness has become one of the more critical criteria for users to choose kitchen furniture. In order to grow into a global corporation, environmentally friendly design became essential. In addition, domestic and foreign consumers are increasingly interested in and spending on children's furniture, and demand for environment - friendly furniture for children's health and emotional development is increasing. In the era of universal consumer tastes due to massive mass production, it has been changed into a multi-product small-volume production period that reflects the preferences of various consumers, so that various types of furniture that meet individual preferences are required. Therefore, in this study, we investigated various personal opinions, perception, preference, propensity to use furniture, purchasing points, etc. for environmentally friendly children's furniture, and provided basic data for environmentally friendly children's furniture development that reflects consumer preference and requirements. • The increasing interest in environment-friendly products brought the new so-called 'health furnitures. 'Recently health-friendly-furnitures have gained a larger share in the furniture market, but the method of making health furnitures is still stuck in the primitive stage. For example, a bed with a stone or ceramic plate is one of the most famous health furniture to date. It needs a design fairly different from an ordinary bed that uses a mattress, but there has been little development on how different it would be. Therefore the purpose of this study is to develop a new design for a newly designed stone bed to make it n)ore competitive in the market. Its basic concept is to make an high-tech but human friendly bed. It should be natural and minimal, and it should have a royal grace on it. We worked on how to maximize every requirement and applied on it. Lastly, we had an eco-friendly final touch on our new bed with environment-friendly natural lacquer, so it could discharge volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde as little as possible.

  • This study explores terminology for legs and feet in the traditional Korean and Western furniture. Pieces of traditional Korean and Western furniture have been largely made of the eco-friendly material, natural wood, and thus important in the latest trends of wellness, such as LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) and a green period. Legs in traditional Korean furniture appeared in dinging tables, and the feet in wardrobes. The limited use of legs and feet seems to be influenced by floor-oriented lifestyles of Korean ancestors. In contrast, most pieces of Western furniture, which is from the chair and bed culture, have various styles of foot and leg. While th two groups are from different backgrounds, both of them have developed various legs and feet applying natural subjects such as animals and plants to each of their furniture including wardrobes, cabinets, dining tables, chairs, consoles, etc. It is also found that the traditional Korean furniture can be influenced by a traditional Chinese chair foot called Neabunmajae, which describes inner horse foot. Neabunmajae was known in Korean furniture legs and feet, but the terminology has not been known. The study suggests that terms which appear in traditional furniture but are unknown should be studied more.

However, the furniture for fast growing preschoolers has not various types because the domestic furniture market for children is mostly baby beds and the furniture for the education of children. Therefore, this study presents the concepts and types of the playable furniture reflecting emotional design for preschool children's healthy emotion and suggests the most appropriate type of playable furniture considering play behavior by age. In this study, we investigated the physical, cognitive, social, emotional and linguistic development characteristics and play behavior of preschoolers, and derived the right type of playground equipment and furniture, and examined the types of playable furniture to help the emotional development. We derived the items to be checked for developing the playable furniture by age for emotional development, and classified preschoolers' playable furniture into the use of learning, relaxation and storage, and suggested its basic type focusing on the cases of various playable furniture developed at home and abroad. As a result, the playable furniture was divided into three types. The first is the self-play type making possible self amusement, the second is module built-up-type that consists of furniture and modules or units and creates various patterns and can be modified through the self-assembly and disassembly, and the third is IT game type grafting IT skills and a variety of electronic games to furniture. We sorted these types into three classes (1-3 years old, 4-5, 6-7) according to age and presented the type of play for each age, the play element and representative image that can be introduced to this furniture. In this study, we provided the basic design types of age-specific emotional playable furniture by analyzing these results.
