  • Patients with chronic renal failure, many of which treated with hemodialysis, present a high prevalence of impaired muscle strength which suggest that muscle mass parameters may be used as markers for changes in muscle in these patients. Measurement of handgrip strength (HGS) is a common, simple, and quick measure of muscle function an indicator of overall muscle strength which has been associated with physical activity and several anthropometric traits. Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) are biochemical markers associated with inflammatory processes which are a common consequence of dialysis. Additionally, hemodialysis patients frequently present signs of malnutrition and depression. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate if muscle and biochemical markers could be used to predict the risk of depression in hemodialysis patients. Several anthropometric parameters, nutrient intake, depression state and the serum levels of ICAM-1 and IGF-1 were determined and Pearson's correlation coefficient and/or Spearman's correlation coefficient were used to test the correlation between them. Our results do not show a correlation between HGF, IGF-1 and ICAM-1 with the depression status of the patients, but mid-arm muscle circumference (MAMC) was statistically and positively correlated with depression. Additionally, ICAM-1 levels were negatively correlated with HGS, MAMC, and IGF-1. Overall, the results of the present study suggest that HGS may be used as an indicator of cardiovascular diseases and MAMC may be a good predictor of the level of depression in hemodialysis patients, although further studies are required.

  • Purpose: This study explored influencing factors on quality of life (QoL) above middle-aged women in relation to demographic factors, health-related factors, menopausal status, metabolic syndrome (MS) and its risk factors. Methods: This study was secondary data analysis from the Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013~2015 that utilized a complex, multi-stage probability sample design. Study sample of 2,310 was inclusive of (28.8%) of women who were over 40. To evaluate the factors that would influence an impaired quality of life, $x^2$ test, GLM, and logistic regression analysis were done. Results: Level of quality of life was lower in women with late post-menopause(over 10 years since menopause) than women with pre-menopause. Factors influencing impaired QoL were as follows: graduated middle school and elementary school or less (OR=2.43, 4.42, respectively, p<.05), no job (OR=1.92, p<.001), stress (OR=1.92, p=.001), depression (OR=1.93, p=.001), insufficient sleep (OR=1.64, p=.003), late post-menopause (OR=2.61, p=.044) and over 85cm of waist circumference (OR=1.76, p=.01). Conclusion: These results suggest that late post-menopause may be an independent factor influencing an impaired QoL. To promote post-menopausal womens' health, a nursing strategy is required to teach women how to manage levels of stress, depression, insufficient sleep, and abdominal obesity through health education, nutritional counselling, and physical activity program.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand depression in women with endometriosis and to identify the factors influencing depression. Method: The instruments used were the Beck Depression Inventory for depression, Lemaire Scale for endometriosis syndrome, Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale-Community form (MUIS-C), the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, and Quality of Life (Endometriosis Health Profile Questionnaire; EHP-5) by Jones et al. The Subjects of Study were 118 outpatients diagnosed with endometriosis from 7 hospitals in Busan City and Kyungsangnam-do. Data was collected from Aug 1, 2004 to Jan 31, 2005. For statistical analysis of collected data, frequency analysis, analysis of variance, and stepwise multiple regression analysis were used with the SPSS statistical program. Result: The general characteristic showing a statistically significant difference in depression in the women with endometriosis was marital status. The score of the depression showed a significantly positive correlation with the score of endometriosis TSD(r= .464, p= .000), uncertainty(r= .393, p= .000), and quality of life(r= .543, p= .000). Depression showed a significantly negative correlation with the score of self esteem(r= - .557, p= .000). Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of depression in the women with endometriosis was self-esteem ($R^2$=0.311). A combination of self esteem, quality of life, and total symptom distress accounted for $50.0\%$ of the variance in depression in women with endometriosis. Conclusion: The influencing factor on depression in women with endometriosis was self- esteem, quality of life, and endometriosis TSD. Further studies need to be done to identify methods of overcoming and the presentation of depression in endometriosis.

  • This study intends to examine how the subjective health perception of drinkers influences the depression trajectory change by using longitudinal data for elderly drinkers. This study has set up a balanced panel by combining the results from "Aging study panel research" conducted in the year 2006 (1st), 2008 (2nd), 2010 (3rd), 2012 (4th). A total of 543 elderly drinkers, who have responded to each research have been selected as targets for the final analysis. In the analyses, descriptive statistics and Latent Growth Modeling were conducted to examine the causal relationship between the observed and latent variables. The results are as follows: First, it was found that there was a negative correlation-with statistical significance-between the initial value of subjective health perception and the initial status of depression symptom. Second, there was a positive correlation between the initial value of subjective health perception and the changes of depression symptom. This indicates that elderly drinkers with high health perception usually have high degree of depression change; however, this does not mean it was statistically significant. Third, there was a statistically significant correlation between subjective health perception change and depression symptom change. It was found that the depression change level would be low if the subjective health perception change level was high. Thus, we can assume that the depression symptoms of elderly drinker c would slow down if the subjective health perception level increases.
