  • The experiment was conducted to investigate the potential for environmentally friendly cultivation of cv. Haryeong, which was bred by the National Institute of Highland Agriculture in 2006, through evaluation of the late blight field resistance at the farmer's practices level. cv. Haryeong showed higher field resistance to late blight as 590.3 in mean Area Under the Disease Progress Curve (AUDPC) during the cultivation period than cv. Superior as 1377.7 in AUDPC. However there was no observed different trend among the experimental treatments. Mean of tuber yield of cvs. Haryeong and Superior were 2,870 kg/10a and 2,301 kg/10a, respectively, and in all experimental treatments Haryeong was 25% higher than those of Superior. Mean of dry matter content of Haryeong and Superior were 18.1% and 16.1%, respectively, and there were no significant differences among the experimental treatments. cv. Haryeong was confirmed as a suitable cultivar for environmentally friendly cultivation in this experiment. In the future, additional research on fertilization and disease management will be required.

  • Potato cv. 'Haryeong' was bred with high solids, resistance to late blight and good culinary quality. It has been registered as new potato variety in 2005. Tuber necrosis symptoms such as severe superficial necrosis, raised surface lesions and ringed necrotic areas were found in tubers of 'Haryeong' during storage of seed potatoes in 2010. Potato virus Y (PVY) was detected from these symptomatic tubers by the analysis of RT-PCR using a primer set specific to coat protein gene of PVY. The nucleotide sequence of RT-PCR product ($PVY^{Hkr}$) was determined and compared to those of other strains, such as $PVY^{Kor}$, $PVY^N$, $PVY^{NTN}$, $PVY^O$, and $PVY^C$ registered in GeneBank. The result showed that $PVY^{Hkr}$ was exactly the same as $PVY^{Kor}$, Korean isolate reported in 2005, except two nucleotides. To verify the PVY was responsible for the tuber necrosis symptoms shown in the tubers of 'Haryeong', a bioassay was done using two viruses (PVY and Potato leafroll virus) and five potato cultivars ('Haryeong', 'Superior', 'Atlantic', 'Dejima', and 'Chubaek'). As expected, the same necrosis symptom appeared in tubers of 'Haryeong' infected with PVY only during the storage period.

  • In order to compare salt tolerance among potato cultivars (Solanum tuberosum L.), in vitro plants of each cultivar were cultured on the Murashige and Skoog's medium containing different levels of NaCl (0, 75, 150, and 225 mM). The suitable level of NaCl for a comparison of the shoot and root growth between potato cultivars was 75mM. Shoot length and weight were better in 'Dejima', 'Superior', 'Jayoung', and 'Haryeong' than in other cultivars such as 'Goun' and 'Atlantic'. Normal root growth was observed in 'Seohong', 'Superior', and 'Haryeong', while 'Goun', 'Atlantic', 'Dejima', 'Jowon', and 'Chuback' showed no root. Proline contents in all the cultivars increased as affected by NaCl levels, then the increase amount was fewer in the cultivars showed a better growth in both shoot and root than in others showed a poor growth. As a result of this study, 'Superior' and 'Haryeong' were determined as salt tolerant cultivars and therefore using these cultivars it would be possible to potato production at salt arable land such as reclaimed tidal.

  • This study was conducted to investigate proper mixed cultivation system of potato and succeeding crops (Chinese cabbage and Radish) in 2009. Potato varieties, 'Superior' a middle maturing variety and 'Haryeong' a late maturing variety were used. After potato harvest, succeeding crops of Radish and Chinese cabbage were planted on July 22th in 'Superior' variety plot and Aug. 3rd in 'Haryeong' variety plot. Potato crop was harvested in proper time, after 15, 30, 45 and 60 days. and a suitable potato variety for succeeding crops among 'Superior' and 'Haryeong' was checked. 'Superior' variety was observed to be low rotting, deformity and greening at Chinese cabbage and Radish treatment plot than non-treatment plot. In addition, high yields of potato was maintained in succeeding crop treatments.

  • A potato cultivar, Haryeong, was released for table stock in 2005 and has been supplied to farmers since 2010. Black dot has been known as a disease causing tuber blemishes in the cultivar, which is primarily an issue in storage. To investigate the effect of curing periods on disease occurrence, four periods (1, 3, 6 and 9 weeks) of curing were applied on Haryeong tubers harvested from the highlands (800 m a.s.l) in September. Tubers were stored at $2-3^{\circ}C$ and 80-90% RH for 6-7 months and were visually checked for disease occurrence. Tuber infection was characterized by barely visible small black spots on tubers and dark sooty lesions in stolon end of tubers. Another symptoms were observed on the upper surface of tubers which showed irregular, small to large, and depressed areas of brown to blackish skin with necrotic lesions inside. Results showed decrease in black dot depending on the curing period that ranges 18-48, 3-35, 0-14 and 0-3% at 1, 3, 6 and 9 weeks curing, respectively. During the storage, however, percentage weight loss of tubers and percentage of tubers with sprouts increased slightly with increasing the curing period from 1-3 to 6-9 weeks.

  • Since the cultivation of resistance cultivar is essential for organic agriculture, Phytophthora late blight resistance of 16 advanced potato clones obtained from the potato breeding laboratory at the National Institute of Highland Agriculture was evaluated. Resistance of the clone was examined through artificial inoculation in the laboratory and in the field. Dominant isolates of the pathogen in Gangwon province produced abundant sporangia on leaves of most clones showing susceptibility. The number of sporangia ranged from $10^{7{\sim}8}sporangia/ml$ in the susceptible clones at 7 days after inoculation. However, one clone is resistant in organic farming fields. Disease incidence was 2.3% using the resistant clone. The area under disease progress curve(AUDPC) was 75.5. Contrarily, disease incidence of the susceptible variety was 100% and the AUDPC was 1773.5 during the same cultivation period. The resistance clone named as 'Haryeong' is considered suitable for organic potato cultivation in Gangwon province in Korea.

  • Thermally expandable microsphere and aerogel composite was prepared by chemical compositization. Microsphere can produce synergies with aerogel, especially an enhancement of mechanical property. Through condensation between sulfonated microsphere and hydrolyzed silica sol, chemically-connected composite aerogel could be prepared. The presence of hydroxyl group on the sulfonated microsphere was observed, which was the prime functional group of reaction with hydrolyzed silica sol. Silica aerogel-coated microsphere was confirmed through microstructure analysis. The presence of silicon-carbon absorption band and peaks from composite aerogel was observed, which proved the chemical bonding between them. A relatively low thermal conductivity value of $0.063W/m{\cdot}K$ was obtained.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the chemical properties and functionality of probiotic potato juice fermented by Lactobacillus casei. Free sugar content (especially glucose) of potatoes decreased by fermentation, but organic acid contents increased by fermentation. Although the free amino acid content of Superior juice significantly decreased after fermentation, Haryeong significantly increased after fermentation. ${\gamma}$-Aminobutyric acid, a functional amino acid, was detected at high levels in all samples and slightly decreased with fermentation, but not significantly. The total polyphenol content of potato juice showed insignificant changes in all samples by fermentation. The hydroxyl radical scavenging activity of all samples was more than 90%, and most of the activity was maintained after fermentation. The nitrite scavenging ability of all samples greatly decreased with fermentation; however a SOD-like activity slightly increased with fermentation, except for Haryeong. There was a significant xanthine oxidase inhibitory effect in fresh potato juice (more than 45%) and a low loss by fermentation. From our results, most of the chemical properties and functionality of potato juice are maintained after fermentation, although free sugar content and nitrite scavenging activity decline. Thus probiotic potato juice fermented by lactic acid could be used as a functional beverage.

  • Robust and hydrophobic tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) based silica aerogel was synthesized by supercritical alcohol drying with surface modification using the phenyl based silica co-precursor (PTMS). The aerogels were synthesized by hydrolysis and polycondensation reaction in which TEOS and PTMS in methanol were reacted together in presence of oxalic acid and ammonium hydroxide as the catalysts. Supercritical alcohol dried PTMS/TEOS composite silica aerogel were examined for the hydrophobicity, chemical interaction, surface morphology, and textural characteristics. The hydrophobic silica-based aerogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to investigate the presence of functional groups and chemical bonds. The prepared silica demonstrates hydrophobicity (76°-149°), a high specific surface area (398 ㎡/g to 739 ㎡/g). The present investigation provides a simple approach to synthesize hydrophobic and thermally stable silica aerogels.

  • SnO2 has the wide bandgap which allows it to be used as the photocatalyst. There are many studies to enhance the photocatalytic properties of SnO2. In this study, 3-dimensional SnO2 aerogel was synthesized using epoxide-initiated sol-gel method for the optimal specific surface area. Also, graphene oxide (GO) was added before the gelation process of the aerogel to maximize the specific surface area. Addition of 0.5 wt% of GO would possibly enhance the specific surface area by 1.7 times compared with the bare tin oxide aerogel. Furthermore, enhanced specific surface area could degrade 67.3% of initial Rhodamine B in 120 minutes. To compare with the bare SnO2 aerogel, 0.5 wt% GO addition to SnO2 could double the reaction rate of the photocatalytic degradation.
