  • The evaluation of shear modulus (or shear wave velocity) profile of site is very important in the various fields of geotechnical engineering. To obtain shear wave velocity profile, various in-situ seismic methods using surface waves have been developed. These surface wave based in-situ seismic methods have their own strength and weakness. In this study, new seismic site characterization method using the harmonic wavelet analysis of wave (HWAW) was proposed to overcome some of weaknesses in the existing surface wave based seismic site characterization methods. HWAW method which is based on time-frequency analysis using harmonic wavelet transform have been developed to determine phase and group velocities of waves. In order to estimate the applicability of HWAW method, field tests were performed. Through field applications and comparison with other test results, the applicability of the proposed method were verified.

  • Based on the nonlinear spring model coupled with perturbation method, 2nd harmonic waves generated by oblique incident ultrasound on nonlinear crack interface were calculated and investigated. Reflected and transmitted waves from the interface were determined and analyzed at various angle of incidence for the cracks with different interfacial stiffness in order to estimate the 2nd harmonic generation of incident ultrasound. It was shown in computer simulation that the 2nd harmonic components changed much with the increase of incidence angle in both reflected and transmitted wave, but became very small when the incident angle approached toward 90 degree. It can be concluded that the 2nd harmonic component of reflected wave has a meaningful amplitude as much as the transmitted 2nd harmonic wave from partly closed crack.

  • An analysis of dynamic responses is carried out on monoclinic anisotropic system due to a buried harmonic line source. The load is in the form of a normal stress acting along an arbitrary axis on the plane of symmetry within the orthotropic materials: In case that the line load is acting along the symmetry axis normal to the plane of symmetry, plane wave equation is coupled with verital shear wave and longitudinal wave. However, if the line load is acting along an arbitrary axis normal to the plane of symmetry, plane wave equation is coupled with vertical shear wave, longitudinal wave and horizontal shear wave. We first considered the equation of motion in a reference coordinate system, where the line load is coincident with a symmetry axis of the orthotropic material. Then the equation of motion is transformed into one with respect to general coordinate system with azimuthal angle by using transformation tensor. Plane wave solutions of monoclinic systems are derived for infinite media. Finally complete solutions for the plane harmonic wave are obtained by calculating the inverse of the integral transforms, in which bulk wave poles are avoided by deforming the contour of the integration to the complex plane. Numerical results for examples of orthotropic material belonging to monoclinic symmetry are demonstrated.

  • This paper proposes a highy efficient inverter circuit for fluorescent lamp inverters using two state capacitors. A waveform of full-wave rectification used as a direct current power supply at fluorescent lamp inverters contains a lot of harmonic wave from inrush current which is generated near the maximum of input voltage with purse shape when voltage smoothing capacitor is charged. Therefore, In order to suppress inrush current which will result in harmonic wave, This paper proposed a method to control abrupt charging current by use of charging voltage at pre-state capacitor. As the result of it, power factor comes to be improved through the suppression of harmonic wave generation at supply current. Validity as to this experiment is confirmed through simulation.

  • The evaluation of shear modulus is very important in various fields of civil engineering. In this paper, the site characterization method using HWAW method is applied to determine shear wave velocity profile of two test sites in order to verify the field applicability of HWAW method. Shear wave velocity profiles by HWAW method are compared with shear wave velocity profiles by SASW test and PS-Suspension Logging test. Through field applications, it is shown that HWAW method can minimize the effect of noise and lateral non-homogeneity of the site and determine detailed local shear wave velocity profile of site.

  • This paper deal with the harmonic reduction technique in three-phase square-wave inverter system formed by single-phase inverter. To reduce the harmonics six single-phase inverters are used for forming multi-phase inverter and zig-zag connected output transformer for eliminating the harmonic 6(2k-1)$\pm$1 orders. And an ac filter is furnished at output side. Computer simulations show that the THD of the output voltage can be reduced immensely.

  • PWM techniques which eliminate and reduce harmonics of output voltage in PWM Inverter driving System with fluctuating input volotage are described. First, harmonic factors are analyzed from harmonic equation of general PWM waveform and by examination of control possiblity of each factor, controllable factor is selected. Applying controllable factor to NPWM, PWM techniques using reference wave and carrier wave modulation are introduced. Actually, by the experiment applied with this strategy, the reduction of harmonics of output voltage is confirmed.

  • A method to increase the output voltage of the PWM inverter within linear range is considered. A new modulation wave is used, which is made by injecting the third harmonic wave into the sinusoidal wave. The optimum region for improving the output voltage keeping the linear control characteristic is obtained by digital simulation. Furthermore, the distortion factor in the optimum region is less than that calculated when the maximum output voltage can be obtained in the sinusoidal PWM inverter.

  • Closed cracks are difficult to detect using conventional ultrasonic testing because most incident ultrasound passes completely through these cracks. Nonlinear ultrasound inspection using sub-harmonic frequencies a promising method for detecting closed cracks. To implement this method, a sub-harmonic phased array (PA) is proposed to visualize the length of closed cracks in solids. A sub-harmonic PA generally consists of a single transmitter and an array receiver, which detects sub-harmonic waves generated from closed cracks. The PA images are obtained using the total focusing method (TFM), which (with a transmitter and receiving array) employs a full matrix in the observation region to achieve fine image resolution. In particular, the receiving signals are measured using a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) to collect PA images for both fundamental and sub-harmonic frequencies. Oblique incidence, which is used to boost sub-harmonic generation, inevitably produces various surface waves that contaminate the signals measured in the receiving transducer. Surface wave interference often degrades PA images severely, and it becomes difficult to read the closed crack's position from the images. Various methods to prevent or eliminate this interference are possible. In particular, enhancing images with signal processing could be a highly cost-effective method. Because periodic patterns distributed in a PA image are the most frequent interference induced by surface waves, spatial frequency filtering is applicable for removing these waves. Experiments clearly demonstrate that the spatial frequency filter improves PA images.
