Movement of pesticides applied for crop protection to the non-target environmental compartments has increasingly concerned in recent. A special review on groundwater leaching potential of pesticides registered in Korea was done by using the data submitted on half-life and adsorption of the pesticides in/on soil. Groundwater ubiquity score(GUS) of pesticides as a leaching potential was calculated by using domestic trial data on pesticide half-life in paddy or upland soils and Koc data bases of Oregon State University (OSU), British Pesticide Safety Directorate and Sweden. Of total 382 pesticides reviewed, domestic half-lives of 107 pesticides were for paddy soil and 297 pesticides for upland soil. And total 317 Koc values were collected 148 pesticides from OSU DB and 276 pesticides from UK/Sweden DB. Very highly leachable pesticides were 18 and highly leachable pesticides were 44 among 313 pesticides classified by GUS.
To develop a value-added individually quick frozen (IQF) intermediate product from cultured sea mussel Mytilus edulis, we prepared IQF half-shelled roasted sea mussels (HRM) and IQF half-shelled boiled sea mussels (HBM). The processing conditions and quality metrics of the mussels were examined. The HRM and HBM were produced by washing and removing the byssus of raw sea mussels, followed by electric roasting or boiling. The roasted or boiled sea mussels were half-shelled, lightly washed with 3% saline water, rapidly frozen for 2 hours at -35℃, glazed, and packaged with a plastic film bag. The HRM and HBM had volatile basic nitrogen contents of 11.5 and 12.6 mg/100 g, and amino nitrogen contents of 607.9 and 534.2 mg/100 g, respectively. The HRM and HBM had hardness values of 4.31 and 2.99 kg/㎠, shearing force values of 992.2 and 507.7 g, free drip values of 8.9% and 10.2%, and expressible drip values of 7.0% and 8.1%, respectively. The free amino acid contents of the HRM and HBM were 763.1 and 560.7 mg/100 g, respectively. These results demonstrate that HRM have superior qualities compared to HBM and can serve as high-end shellfish when cooked.
As of 2010, apartment occupies more than half of all houses in Korea. It took just half a century since 1960 when apartment was introduced to ordinary people for the first time. The apartment has spread over the nation very swiftly since then. This phenomena needs more inclusive explanations than the investigations into the government's policies or economical situations. Without satisfaction and consensus of people, the universal spread of apartment might be fairly unrealizable. In this vein, the research and analysis has been performed in order to grasp the picture of everyday life's discourse based on the related articles from five major newspapers and five women's magazines during 1960~1989. From the articles' discourses we tried to understand how modern apartment has been accepted and evaluated through people's living life in it. First, the discourse of living life was generated mostly by housewives through the comparison between apartment and traditional house. Second, the most influential aspect of apartment's popularization was the convenience of efficient housekeeping system by modern equipment and home appliance installed in apartment. This efficiency could allow housewives to perform various urban activities such as work, shopping, and simple going out. Third, the satisfaction from efficiency and privacy brought about a sense of alienation at the same time. As a result, the rapid proliferation of apartment in Korea could be attained not only by the institutional driving forces but through the fulfillments of Korean people's housing needs from modern everyday life.
The purpose of this study was to develop a Quality of Life(QOL) scale for breast cancer patients in Korea and to test the validity and reliability of the instrument. To achieve the purpose of the study, a questionnaire was developed to interview 10 breast cancer patients and distributed to 155 patients with breast cancer in Korea. For data analysis, SPSS WIN 8.0/PC were used. Item analysis and factor analysis were carried out to test validity of the QOL scale. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ and Guttman split half coefficient were used to test reliability of the scale. The results were as follows; As a result of the item analysis, 27 items were selected from the total of 34 items. 6 factors were selected by factor analysis. Six factors were labeled as 'response to cancer diagnosis and treatment', 'family well-being', 'physical concerns', 'psychological well-being', 'spiritual well-being', and 'economic concerns'. Six factors were explained by 72.236% out of the total variance. The first factor explained 20.738% and the second factor explained 16.593%, which were major factors for Korean breast cancer patients. Chronbach's ${\alpha}$ coefficient of the tool was .9120, and Guttman split-half coefficient was .8148. The scale was identified to be a tool with a high degree of reliability and validity. Therefore, this scale can be effectively utilized for assessment of Quality of Life of patients with breast cancer in Korea.
This research involved a survey on the dietary patterns of children and adolescents living in group homes, to find out their wrong eating habits and to devise measures for correcting their problems. The BMIs of the subject children and adolescents in group homes were measured, and the result showed that although many of them appeared to have normal weights, about 42.2% were actually underweight. Most of them had meals regularly, three times a day at fixed times. However, half of them frequently skipped breakfast because of the lack of time in the morning. In addition, more than half of them had the habit of having imbalanced diets, especially with low vegetable intake. The score for their satisfaction toward meals at group homes were highest (3.97) with the taste of food, while it was relatively lower (3.61) with the variety of food than with the other items. The average score for their snack intake was 3.47, showing that the majority of them had the habit of eating snacks, while the largest portion (26.0%) of them preferred bread and cookies. According to the result of the analysis on their food intake, overall calorie intake was about 82~96% of estimated energy requirements, while that of the male subjects aged 12 or older was about 82% of the standard energy requirements. Their overall intake of calcium and potassium was lower than recommended nutrition intake, but sodium intake was higher than 3 times recommended intake. Especially, in addition to calcium and potassium, the male subjects aged 15 or older showed low intake of dietary fiber, iron, zinc, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin C and folate also; whereas the female subjects aged 15 or older showed low intake of iron, zinc, riboflavin and folate also. Taken together, it was concluded that government level of dietary life-related support and management would be necessary for the healthy growth and development of children and adolescents in group homes.
The effect of mixed treatments of wood vinegar and sulfonylurea-based herbicides on weed control, yield and yield components, and quality of rice was investigated. Two herbicides were tested namely: imazosulfuron-ethyl+thiobencarb[ethyl-1-(2-chloroimidazo[1,2-$\alpha$]pyridin-3-ylsulfonyl)-3-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl) urea+S-4-chlorobenzyl diethyl(thiocarbamate)], and bensulfuronmethyl+butachlor [methyl $\alpha$-[(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-ylcarbamoyl)sulfamoyl]-o-toluate+N-butoxymethyl-2-chloro-2',6'-diethylacetanilide]. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications and 5 treatments. Treatments used were recommended(RH: 100%) and half-recommended(HRH: 50%) application rates of each herbicide. Half-recommended application rates were combined with 1 mL wood vinegar $500mL\;water^{-1}$(500) and 1 mL wood vinegar $1000mL\;water^{-1}$(1000) wood vinegar. Plots for no herbicide treatments were also prepared and used as control. Results showed that wood vinegar significantly increased efficacy of HRH in bensulfuron-methyl+butachlor while high efficacy was already obtained in HRH treatment of imazosulfuron-ethyl+thiobencarb. Wood vinegar did not improve the efficacy of imazosulfuron-ethyl+thiobencarb but improved rice yield. Significantly similar rice yields were obtained in the HRH+1000 WV and RH treatments of both herbicides. There were no significant variations in the yield components among the treatments; however, differences in yield can be attributed to the variations in the spikelet number and ripening ratio. Data on rice quality analysis did not show clear trend on the effects of the treatments on grain appearance and nutritional quality.
The biological half-life and dissipation rate of azoxystrobin in crown daisy were calculated to establish the pre-harvest residue limits (PHRLs). The pesticide residues were calculated after washing with five different processes to propose an effective process in the household and conducted a risk assessment to confirm dietary safety. Azoxystrobin was sprayed according to the critical good agricultural practices (cGAP) in two different field trials, and the samples were harvested 7 times. The limit of quantitation was 0.02 mg/kg, and the mean recoveries of azoxystrobin were within the range of 70~120% with below 20% coefficient variation at the concentration of 0.02 and 0.2 mg/kg . The biological half-lives were 7.4 and 4.7 days, and the dissipation rate constants were 0.0872 and 0.1217 in fields 1 and 2, respectively. The average removal rates were 58.13~78.13% by the different washing processes, and there were significant differences between the washing processes (one-way ANOVA analysis and post-hoc Duncan test, p-value<0.05). The residues of azoxystrobin in crown daisy were safe levels from farm to fork after application with the critical good agricultural practice (cGAP) registered in Korea.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of the Korean version of Life Balance Inventory (K-LBI) and to present the relationship between life balance and sensory processing. Methods : K-LBI was constructed through forward and backward translation. Convergent validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability were tested for college students. To verify convergent validity, correlation analyses between K-LBI and Korean version of Perceived Stress Scale, Korean version of Satisfaction With Life Scale, and Adult Self Report-Achenbach system of empirically based assessment were performed. Split-half reliability and test-retest reliability were also obtained for reliability verification. We performed the correlation analysis between K-LBI and Korean version of Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile. Results : A significant correlation was found between K-LBI and the scales for convergent validity. A favorable split-half reliability and test-retest reliability were calculated. The positive correlations were found between relationship life balance and sensory sensitivity/sensation avoiding quadrants. The negative correlation was found between challenges life balance and low registration. Conclusion : This study shows that K-LBI is a valid and reliable tool in Korea. It also provides an in-depth understanding of the relationship between life balance and sensory processing.
Background: Valproic acid is widely used in the treatment of generalized tonic-clonic and partial seizures. The carbapenem class is the most potent and widest spectrum of antimicrobial activity. Concomitant administration of carbapenems and valproic acid has been reported to decrease the serum concentration of valproic acid, which is sometimes associated with seizures. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the changes in valproic acid concentration and half life and the frequency of seizure during concomitant administration of valproic acid and carbapenems. Method: This study was performed retrospectively on total 40 cases with identified valproic acid concentration during concomitant administration of valproic acid and carbapenems at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital from February 1st, 2006 to October 31st, 2011. Patients were classified into 3 groups: ertapenem group (n=14), imipenem group (n=12), meropenem group (n=14). Results: The mean serum concentrations in each group during combined treatment were $9.50{\pm}8.84$, $21.88{\pm}8.17$ and $10.62{\pm}8.67$ mg/L, respectively (p < 0.001). The mean half-lives in each group during concurrent use of valproic acid and carbapenems were $3.18{\pm}0.81$, $4.63{\pm}1.97$ and $2.67{\pm}1.69$ hr, respectively (p < 0.001). The valproic acid serum concentration decreased by 75.5%, 54.1% and 84.1% and the half-life of valporoic acid decreased by 65.6%, 35.7% and 73.5%, respectively. Total cases with seizure were 12(30%) with 5(35.7%) in the ertapenem group, 3 (25.0%) in the imipenem group and 4(28.6%) in the meropenem group (p=0.911). There were no specific factors to influence on seizure development during combined treatment. Conclusion: Concurrent use of carbapenems and valproic acid should be avoided. If concomitant administration is essential, very close serum concentration monitoring and clinical observation are necessary.

BACKGROUND: It is hard to control the agricultural products exceeding MRL (maximum residue limit) before forwarding. Therefore, NAQS (National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service, South Korea) established PHRL (pre-harvest residue limit) on agricultural products during their cultivation periods. This study was performed to set the PHRLs of peach during cultivation period, and also to estimate biological half-lives for residues of clothianidin and fluquinconazole. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two groups of peach were treated under Korean GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) with application time, single and triple treatments. Sample was collected over 14days (each after 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 days. 8times), and clothianidin and fluquinconazole were analyzed by HPLC/DAD and GC/ECD, respectively. CONCLUSION: The biological half-life of clothianidin in single treatment and triple treatment was 5.2days and 7.0days. That of fluquinconazole was also 3.9days and 4.1days, respectively. The PHRL of peach on 10days before harvest was 1.4 mg/kg in clothianidin and 1.8 mg/kg in fluquinconazole.
