Fast CU Decision Method for HEVC Encoder (HEVC 부호기에서의 고속 CU 결정 방법)

  • 현재 표준화가 진행 중인 HEVC (High-efficiency video coding) 는 기존의 동영상 표준과 마찬가지로 여러 기술들이 혼합된 하이브리드 영상 부호화 프레임 워크 구조를 따르고 있다. 특히, 다양한 크기의 부호화 단위 (Coding Unit : CU), 예측단위 (Prediction Unit : PU), 변환 단위 (Transform Unit : TU) 의 사용으로 인해 HD 이상의 영상에 대하여 기존의 H.264/AVC 보다 약 40%의 압축률 향상을 보이고 있다. 하지만 그로 인하여 부호화기 복잡도가 약 3 배 이상 증가하는 것으로 나타났으며 이는 실시간 부호화가 요구되는 분야에서 큰 문제가 될 것이다. 본 논문은 HEVC 부호화기 복잡도를 낮추기 위하여 최적의 CU 를 결정하는 과정 중 조기에 CU 를 결정하는 고속 CU 결정 방법을 소개한다. 실험 결과, 제안된 방법은 HM과 비교하여 PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) 의 손실이 거의 없이 최대 약 58%의 부호화 시간을 절약하였다.

  • In this paper, we suggest a new video coding method using hierarchical block mode structure extension. It is based on the conventional H.264 block modes but adds hierarchically extended block modes to cover large resolution sequences. It is shown by experimental results that the proposed method can achieve a higher coding gain for HD sequences.

  • 2013년 1월에 완성된 HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) 표준은 full HD (High Definition) 해상도를 뛰어넘는 UHD (Ultra High Definition) 초고해상도 영상 서비스 수요를 반영하였으며, 기존의 H.264/AVC 대비 두 배 이상의 압축 성능을 달성하였다. 이러한 초고해상도 영상 서비스와 더불어 현실과 유사한 고명함도 (HDR : High Dynamic Range) 및 광색역 (WCG : Wide Color Gamut) 영상에 대한 수요 또한 증가하고 있다. 이러한 시장의 수요를 반영하여, HDR/WCG와 관련된 국제 표준 단체들에서는 활발한 표준화를 진행하고 있다. 본 고에서는 MPEG에서 진행되는 HDR/WCG 영상의 표준 기술동향에 대해 살펴보고, HDR/WCG 영상의 부호화 효율에 영향을 미치는 기술적 이슈들에 대해 소개한다.

  • 본 논문에서는 듀얼 스트림 기반의 지상파 양안식 3DTV 서비스를 위하여, 상용제품의 MPEG-2 인코더와 AVC/H.264 인코더를 이용하여 부호화할 경우, 두 개의 인코더에서 출력되는 MPEG-2 전송스트림을 입력받아 좌우 영상의 스트림을 프레임단위로 동기화하는 방법을 제안한다. 제안하는 동기화 방법은 좌우 HD-SDI 신호의 수직 보조 데이터 공간(VANC-Vertical ANCillary data space)에 동기정보를 삽입하고, 이 동기정보를 바탕으로 2 개의 DTV 인코더에서 출력되는 좌우영상의 전송스트림을 동기화할 수 있도록 한다. 따라서, 본 논문에서 동기정보는 기존의 상용 DTV 인코더에서 프레임 단위로 부호화를 지원하는 폐쇄자막(Closed caption) 구문에 따라 VANC 에 삽입하는 방법을 제안한다.

  • Along with the development of network transmission technology, the IPTV market is growing in fast pace. Additionally the UHD resolution broadcasting system along with user experience (UX) that provides better service to user has attracted attention recently since there are not enough research has been done with differentiated the UX that can enhance the UX yet. Therefore we proposed a low complexity syntax level image stitching implementation technique that run with multi-view services, which makes possibility to view multiple channel or video contents on the screen at the same time. Simulation results have demonstrated the liability and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by showing that capability of generating more than 80 frames per second by stitching four Full-HD size videos into UHD frame.

A Study on the HEVC Video Encoder PMR Block Design (HEVC 비디오 인코더 PMR 블록 설계에 대한 연구)

  • HEVC/H.265 is the latest joint video coding standard proposed by ITU-T SG 16 WP and ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC29/WG 11. In H.265, pictures are divided into a sequence of coding tree units(CTUs), and the CTU further is partitioned into multiple CUs to adapt to various local characteristics. Its coding efficiency is approximately two times high compared to previous standard H.264/AVC. However according to the size of extended CU(coding unit) and transform block, the hardware size of PMR(prediction/mode decision/reconstruction) block within video encoder is about 4 times larger than previous standard. In this study, we propose a new less complex hardware architecture of PMR block which has the most high complexity within encoder without any noticeable PSNR loss. Using this simplified block, we can shrink the overall size the H.265 encoder. For FHD image, it operates at clocking frequency of 300 MHz and frame rate of 60 fps. And also for the test image, the Bjøntegaard Delta (BD) bit rate increase about average 30 % in PMR prediction block, and the total estimated gate count of PMR block is around 1.8 M.

Cross-layered Video Information Sharing Method and Selective Retransmission Technique for The Efficient Video Streaming Services (효율적인 영상 스트리밍 서비스를 위한 Cross-layer 영상 정보 공유 방법 및 선택적 재전송 기법)

  • In this paper, we proposed cross-layered approach of video codec and communication system for the efficient video streaming service. Conventional video streaming is served by divided system which consist of video codec layer and communication layer. Its disintegration causes the limitation of the performance of video streaming service. With the cross-layered design, each layer could share the information and the service is able to enhance the performance. And we proposed the selective retransmission method in communication system based on the cross-layered system that reflect the information of encoded video data. Selective retransmission method which consider the characteristics of video data improves the performance of video streaming services. We verified the proposed method with raw format full HD test sequence with H.264/AVC codec and MATLAB simulation. The simulation results show that the proposed method improves about 10% PSNR performance.

Fast Non-integer Motion Estimation for HEVC Encoder (HEVC 부호화기를 위한 고속 비정수 움직임 추정)

  • The latest video coding standard, HEVC can improve the coding efficiency significantly compared with the H.264/AVC. However the HEVC encoder requires much larger computational complexities. The longer 8-tap interpolation filter of the HEVC which is used in a non-integer motion estimation is one of the reasons and this paper aims to reduce the computational complexities. First of all, three shorter-tap interpolation filters for a motion estimation process are tested rather than the use of a standard interpolation filter. In addition, the fast searching strategies to reduce the number of comparisons for choosing the best non-integer motion vector are proposed. Finally, the interpolation process is selectively applied according to the searching strategy. By combining all of the techniques, the experimental results show that the encoding times can be reduced by 13.6%, 18.5% and 21.1% with the coding efficiency penalties of 0.7%, 1.5% and 2.5%, respectively. For the full-HD video sequences, the coding efficiency penalties are reduced to 0.4%, 1.1% and 1.6% at the same level of the encoding time savings, which shows the effectiveness of the proposed schemes for the high resolution video sequences.
