This paper proposes the novel control of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). This STATCOM system consists of cascade multilevel inverter which employs H-bridge inverter(HBI) The STATCOM system is modeled in the d-q transform matrix. This model is used to design a controller. The selective harmonic elimination method(SHEM) allows to keep the total harmonic distortion (THD) low in the output voltage. The switching method produces the staircase type waveform in cascade multilevel inverter. To balance the DC voltages in HBIs capacitor, the rotated switching scheme is newly proposed in this paper. The proposed control scheme is verified in the simulated results.
This paper examines the application of high voltage static var compensator(SVC) with cascade multilevel inverter which employs H-bridge inverter(HBI). This method has the primary advantage that the number of voltage levels can be increased for a given number of semiconductor devices when compared to the conventional control methods. The SVC system is modeled using the d-q transform which calculates the instantaneous reactive power. This model is used to design a controller and analyze the SVC system. From the mathematical model of the system, the design procedures of the circuit parameters L and C are presented in this thesis. To meet the specific total harmonic distortion(THD) and ripple factor of the capacitor voltage, the circuit parameters L and C are designed. Simulated and experimental results are also presented and discussed to validate the proposed schemes.
In this paper, configuration of $1-{\phi}$ seven-level boost DC-link cascade based reversing voltage multilevel inverter (BDCLCRV MLI) is proposed for uninterrupted power supply (UPS) applications. It consists of three level boost converter, level generation unit and full bridge circuit for polarity generation. When compared with conventional boost cascaded H-bridge MLI configurations, the proposed system results in reduction of DC sources, reduced power switches and gate drive requirements. Inverter switching is accomplished by providing appropriate switching angles that is generated by any optimization switching angle techniques. Here, round modulation control (RMC) method is taken as the optimization method and switching angles are derived and the same is compared with various switching angles methods i.e., equal-phase (EP) method, and half-equal-phase (HEP) method which results in improved quality of obtained AC power with lowest total harmonic distortion (THD). Reduction in DC sources and switch count makes the system more cost effective. A simulation and prototype model of $1-{\phi}$ seven-level BDCLCRV MLI system is developed and its performance is analyzed for various operating conditions.
This paper describes a transformerless static synchronous campensator (STATCOM) system based on cascade H-bridge multilevel inverter with star configuration. It is designed not only for the dynamic and continuous compensation of the reactive power but also for the improvement of power quality of existing wind power plant. Especially, when the induction generator of wind turbine is directly connected to the grid, reactive power are occurred by exiting current. so a reactive power compensation system based on the cascade H-bridge multilevel STATCOM is proposed because the output power quality and controllability of reactive power are required by grid code in many different countries. Using various The proposed reactive power control strategy using a STATCOM is compared with the conventional scheme using fixed-size of capacitor bank through various simulation results.
This paper proposes a practical design and development for CHBM inverter based on Power Electronics Building Blocks (PEBB). It is shown that the expansion and modularization characteristics of the CHBM inverter are improved since the individual inverter modules operate more independently, when using the PEBB concept. The proposed design and control methods are described in detail and the validity of the proposed system is verified experimentally in various industrial fields.

This paper deals with the design and implementation of an efficient topology for cascaded multilevel inverters with reduced part counts. In the proposed design, a well-established basic unit is first developed. The series extension of this unit results in the formation of the proposed multilevel inverter. The proposed design minimizes the number of power electronic components including insulated-gate bipolar transistors and gate driver circuits, which in turn cuts down the size of the inverter assembly and reduces the operating power losses. An explicit control strategy with enhanced device efficiency is also acquired. Thus, the part count reductions enhance not only the economical merits but also the technical features of the entire system. In order to accomplish the desired operational aspects, three algorithms are considered to determine the magnitudes of the dc voltage sources effectively. The proposed topology is compared with the conventional cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter topology, to reflect the merits of the presented structure. In continue, both the analytical and experimental results of a cascaded 31-level structure are analyzed. The obtained results are discussed in depth, and the exemplary performance of the proposed structure is corroborated.
Recently, Switching devices become cheaper, depending on the multi-level inverters are considered as the power-conversion systems for high-power and power-quality demanding applications. The multi-level inverters can reduce the THD(Total Harmonic Distortion) as the output which is similar sinusoidal waveform by synthesizing several capacitor DC voltages. However it has some disadvantages such as increased number of components, complex PWM control method. Therefore, this paper is proposed the new multi-level inverter topology using an new H-bridge output stage with a bidirectional auxiliary switch. The proposed topology is the 4-level 3-phase PWM inverter with less switching part than conventional multi-level inverters and reactive power control possible. In order to understand the new multi-level inverter, topology analysis and switching patterns and modes according to the current loop are described in this paper. The proposed multi-level inverter topology is validated through PSIM simulation and the experimental results are provided from a prototype.
The H-bridge inverter is the fundamental power cell of the cascaded distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM). Thus, cell reliability is important to the compensation performance and stability of the overall system. The concept of the power electronics building block (PEBB) is an ideal solution for the power cell design. In this paper, an H-bridge inverter-based “plug and play” HPEBB is introduced into the main circuit and the controller to improve the compensation performance and reliability of the device. The section that discusses the main circuit primarily emphasizes the design of electrical parameters, physical structure, and thermal dissipation. The section that presents the controller part focuses on the principle of complex programmable logic device -based universal controller This section also analyzes typical reliability and anti-interference issues. The function and reliability of HPEBB are verified by experiments that are conducted on an HPEBB test-bed and on a 10 kV/± 10 Mvar DSTATCOM industrial prototype.
