  • Since the dredging reclaimed land consisting of soft ground is very weak in support, the difficult and complex factors should be considered in the design to calculate accurate bearing capacity of soft ground. Recently, various reinforcement construction methods of soft ground have been designed for dredged landfills, but the stabilities are predicted by calculating conventional Meyerhof (1974) equation for trafficability in soft ground. Conventional equations increase economic costs by underestimating bearing capacity of weak ground in order to ensure constructive safety, so a modified equation has been proposed from the literature. The paper attempts to experiment and compute important factors, such as stitching fiber and seam tensile strength of geotextiles, that are not theoretically considered and can be identified in the field. In addition, The evaluation of the bearing capacity of the modified equation is verified to be stable for trafficability through the plate bearing test performed on site.

  • Many industrialized countries of the world have many problems about the reuse of waste landfill area because the increase of terminated waste disposal landfill. Especially, the effective use of the terminated waste disposal landfill nearby the urban area has been demanded, because of the lack of the usable land. However, the reuse of terminated waste disposal landfill site is needed an adequate stabilization of ground for increasing the bearing capacity and reduce the allowable settlement for the given structure. This study is to evaluate the applicability of geosynthetics for the increment of bearing capacity of solid waste landfill ground. The in-situ cyclic plate loading tests were performed to determine the dynamic and static behaviors of reinforced ground with geosynthetics. Four series of test were conducted with variations of geosynthetics, number of geogrid layer. Based on the cyclic plate load test results, the bearing capacity ratio, subgrade modulus of ground, and the elastic rebound ratio were determined.

  • The problems like a deterioration of loading bearing capacity, an exaggeration of settlement and lateral deformation are able to be generated, meanwhile structures are built in soft ground. Top-Base method is belonged to a rigidity mat foundation method which is used to surface treatment of soft ground. This method makes an effect to increase the bearing capacity of foundation using friction force, and prevent the differential settlement. Further more, the In-Situ Top-Base method has advantages in the phase of economic effect by reduction of the construction cost and offers an expediency on construction comparing with precast products. This paper presents the way of the estimation of bearing capacity for In-Situ Top-Base method through field plate load test in soft ground. It utilizes the results to a future design by analyzing the properties in the existing study and designs through these analysis and calculating the top-base method's reasonable range.

  • This paper deals with numerical analysis on a high-$T_c$ superconducting (HTS) electrodynamic suspension (EDS) simulator according to the variation of the ground conductor conditions. Because the levitation force of EDS system is formed by the magnetic reaction between moving magnets and fixed ground conductors, the distribution of the magnetic flux on a ground conductor plays an important role in the determining of the levitation force level. The possible way to analyze HTS EDS system was implemented with 3D finite element method (FEM) tool. A plate type ground conductor generated stronger levitation force than ring type ground conductor. Although the outer diameter of Ring3 (335 mm) was larger than that of Ring2 (235 mm), the levitation force by Ring2 was stronger than that by Ring3. Considering the results of this paper, it is recommended that the magnetic flux distribution according to the levitation height and magnet current should be taken into account in the design of the ground conductors.

  • Soil deformation on the off-load ground is significantly affected by soil conditions, such as soil type, water content, and etc. Thus, the soil characteristics should be estimated for predicting vehicle movements on the off-load conditions. The plate-sinkage test, a widely-used experimental test for predicting the wheel-soil interaction, provides the soil characteristic parameters from the relationship between soil stress and plate sinkage. In this study, soil stress under the plate-sinkage situation is calculated by the DEM (Discrete Element Method) model. We developed a virtual soil bin with DEM to obtain the vertical reaction forces under the plate pressing the soil surface. Also parametric studies to investigate effects of DEM model parameters, such as, particle density, Young's modulus, dynamic friction, rolling friction, and adhesion, on the characteristic soil parameters were performed.

  • One of the most challenging issues facing shallow seismic survey is how to generate large amplitude of high frequency signal with small seismic sources. We tested the performance of the most commonly used shallow seismic source, hammer, with four plates: PE, nylon, aluminum, and steel plates. We compared their signal powers in terms of impulsive forces, accelerations, and ground vibration velocities caused by hammer impacts. According to a previous work, hammer blowing to an aluminum plate would generate the largest amplitude among four combinations. However, it was found in this experimental research that aluminum plate delivers seismic wave energy to the ground less than that generated with steel or PE plate. Even though the amplitude is relatively small, plastic plates could provide seismic pulses of 180 ~ 200 Hz in the bandwidth, and it seems to be very hard to generate seismic energy over the frequency of 250 Hz.

  • Sampling disturbance can often introduce considerable errors in the laboratory estimation of geotechnical properties of soils. Accordingly, it causes inappropriative results in analysing field behavior. Therefore, a screw plate load test, one of in-situ test technique, is developed in this study, because in-situ testing techniques have advantages for the estimation of reliable geotechnical parameters. The screw plate load test, which was modified from the plate load test, conducts an experiment underneath ground by inserting a spiral type of auger screw. In this study, the structure and characteristics of the screw plate load test device are introduced in detail and the reliability of the device is examined through the analysis of the laboratory test results.

  • For the design of spread foundation and the stability evaluation, we compared and analyzed it for theoretical, empirical bearing capacity formulas, and various settlement computation formulas, by conducting the plate bearing test at the site of A and B, which consisted of gneiss weathered soil. In addition, we considered the effective method of stability evaluation by carrying out the plate bearing test carried out on the ground consisted of weathering soil of gneiss. Consequently, it was found out that the allowablebearing capacity by the theoretical formula of Terzaghi was too excessive in comparison with the result of the plate bearing test and the Terzaghi-Peck method, which was used widely domestically in designing the spread foundation. It was more effective for a stable design. As a result of the plate bearing test carried out, on the ground consisted of weathering soil. It was found that reviewing the stability by the bearing capacity calculated with load-settlement curve. It is evaluated in a safer side than the point of view of the settlement.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the mechanical behaviour of the plate on a Winkler's foundation according to the soil-structures relative stiffness and the applicability of the conventional analysis method. For the above purpose, Winkler's constant of 4, 15, 25 and 100kg/$cm^2$/cm was considered and the plate thickness of 20, 30, 50, 100 and 150cm was adopted. Results obtained from the numerical examples are summarized as follow: 1. The effects of elastic foundation is considerable for plates with small flexural rigidity. 2. As the Winkler's constant increases, the bending moment in the plate becomes localized near the loading point. 3. The stresses evaluated by the conventional method not correct even for rigid ground such as rock. 4. If the relative stiffness of the plate is very large, for example the plate thickness is larger than 100cm, the conventional analysis method can be justified for the design purposes. 5. On assumption the flexural rigidity of the plate is infinite, the interaction of soil and plate can be ignored in design consideration. The numerical examples in this paper show that when the plate thickness is more than 100cm, the effects of elastic foundation almost disappear. In practical design, soil-plate interaction should be taken into account, because the 100cm-thickness of the plate will not be practical value in usual sites.

  • When we excavate an underground to build basement, the ground anchors are needed to prevent collapse of neighboring ground, subsidence and movement. Ground anchor construction required shore sheet piles, wales and struts as to maintain secure excavation. Existing box-type bracket using head part of ground anchor can not be possibly adjustable to the boring angle because the brackets are manufactured with unified angle in a factory. Also, box-type brackets have imperfection and instability caused by inequable force. In this study, a new bracket system is proposed. The bracket's side plate is reinforced and the angle of boring can be controlled. To investigate the structural performance of presented brackets, FEM analysis has been performed by using ANSYS commercial program. As a result, this bracket shows sufficient stability for all angle case and the strength is increased about 24% than existing bracket.
