수동저항부가 형성된 띠형 섬유보강재의 인발저항 특성 (Pullout Resistance of Geosynthetic Strip with Rounded Band Anchor)

  • 본 연구에서는 수동저항부를 형성시킨 띠형 섬유보강재의 인발저항 특성을 평가하기 위해 일련의 실내인발시험을 수행하였다. 이 띠형 섬유보강재는 중간에 길이방향으로 접힘홈이 형성되어 있어 보강재를 반폭으로 접어 콘크리트 블록에 직접 체결할 수 있고 후단부에는 보강재를 '${\cap}$' 형태로 세워서 수동저항부를 형성시킬 수 있다. 이 띠형 섬유보강재는 후단부에 수동저항부가 형성되어 있기 때문에, 흙과 보강재 사이의 표면마찰저항과 수동저항부에서의 지지저항력이 함께 발현되는 인발저항 특성을 가진다. 따라서, 인발저항 평가시 마찰저항과 지지저항을 각각 산정하여 설계에 반영해야 한다. 일련의 인발시험 결과 수동저항부를 형성시키면 인발저항강도가 10~65% 정도 증가하고 수직응력이 클수록 증가량이 점차 커지는 경향을 보이는 것으로 나타났으며, 이를 근거로 수동저항부 형성에 의해 발현되는 지지저항력 산정 방법을 제안하였다.

Impact of Three Categories of Supplements on In Sacco Ruminal Degradation of Urea-Treated and Untreated Straw Substrates

  • The objective of this study was to examine the impact of three categories of supplements on intake and diet induced difference on degradation of straw substrates. Sixteen crossbred cattle fitted with rumen cannula were randomly divided into 4 equal groups. Animals were fed on wheat straw ad libitum without any supplement except mineral mixture (control; $T_1$) or supplemented with concentrate mixture (CS; $T_2$) or green Lucerne (GLS; $T_3$) or urea-molasses block lick (ULS; $T_4$). Total dry matter intake in $T_2$, $T_3$ and $T_4$ was increased by 70, 54 and 49%, respectively compared to $T_1$ which was only 1.55 kg/100 kg B.Wt. Other than control animals, straw intake was less on $T_3$ than $T_2$ or $T_4$. In Sacco degradation of untreated and urea treated wheat or paddy straw in different treatments indicated that the supplements had a significant (p<0.01) impact on rapidly soluble (A) and insoluble but potentially degradable (B) fractions of straw. Urea treatment increased fraction-A but, provision of supplement improved fraction-B also. Effective degradation (ED) of OM was better on $T_2$. Rate of degradation (C) of OM and CWC was dependent on diet and type of straw but hemicellulose and cellulose were related to latter factor only. ED of cell wall carbohydrates (CWC) was similar in $T_2$ and $T_4$ but higher than $T_3$. CS was more effective in improving the degradation of both untreated and urea treated straw while ULS was effective on the former only. CS had more impact on superior quality straw while contrary was true with ULS. Although GLS improved intake and degradability of untreated and urea treated straws, its bulkiness affected the straw intake compared to other supplements.

Actin Cytoskeleton and Golgi Involvement in Barley stripe mosaic virus Movement and Cell Wall Localization of Triple Gene Block Proteins

  • Barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV) induces massive actin filament thickening at the infection front of infected Nicotiana benthamiana leaves. To determine the mechanisms leading to actin remodeling, fluorescent protein fusions of the BSMV triple gene block (TGB) proteins were coexpressed in cells with the actin marker DsRed: Talin. TGB ectopic expression experiments revealed that TGB3 is a major elicitor of filament thickening, that TGB2 resulted in formation of intermediate DsRed:Talin filaments, and that TGB1 alone had no obvious effects on actin filament structure. Latrunculin B (LatB) treat-ments retarded BSMV cell-to-cell movement, disrupted actin filament organization, and dramatically decreased the proportion of paired TGB3 foci appearing at the cell wall (CW). BSMV infection of transgenic plants tagged with GFP-KDEL exhibited membrane proliferation and vesicle formation that were especially evident around the nucleus. Similar membrane proliferation occurred in plants expressing TGB2 and/or TGB3, and DsRed: Talin fluorescence in these plants colocalized with the ER vesicles. TGB3 also associated with the Golgi apparatus and overlapped with cortical vesicles appearing at the cell periphery. Brefeldin A treatments disrupted Golgi and also altered vesicles at the CW, but failed to interfere with TGB CW localization. Our results indicate that actin cytoskeleton interactions are important in BSMV cell-to-cell movement and for CW localization of TGB3.

옥상녹화용 방근층 구성재료의 방근성능에 관한 실험적 연구 (Resistance to Root Penetration of Root Barrier for Green Roof System)

  • The purpose of this study is to test performances of 14 types of root barrier materials by applying testing plant: and soils suitable for weather and natural features of Korea. For testing Plants, Plioblastus pygmaed Mitford A and Pyracantha angustifolia have been selected. For testing soil, mixture of pearlite and peat moss in 3:1 ratio Testing container has been fabricated with duplicated structure having inner and outer containers. And the outer container has 2 hinges on its side wall to allow opening and closing. Wet rock wool with 50mm in thickness has been inserted between inner and outer containers to allow root to penetrate through root barrier material and continue to grow. We planted 12 Plioblastus pygmaed Mitford A. and 4 Pyracantha angustifolia per one testing container. Three testing samples have been made for 1 type of root barrier material, which become a total 42 specimens. Planted testing samples have been installed within the greenhouse, which will be observed regularly for 2 years from now on. We started test from July 11, 2008 and had performed intermediate observations every month for initial 3 months. From the 3rd intermediate observation on Sept. 18, we confirmed that 6 types of roe barrier materials have penetrated roots. Even though two types of them have been generally used as root barrier materials for roof planting system, all of three testing samples have a lot of penetrated roots. This result proves that it is not reasonable to introduce testing methods of root barrier from Europe. USA or Japan.

마우스복강비만세포에서 프로테아제 발현 표현형의 조직 의존적 변화 (Tissue-dependent variation of protease expression phenotype in mouse peritoneal mast cells)

  • To examine the fate of the injected peritoneal mast cells (PMCs), we injected PMCs (500 or $10^5$) derived from WBB6F1-green fluorescent protein(GFP) mice into stomach wall of $WBB6F1-W/W^v$ mice. When 500 PMCs were injected, the proportion of alcian blue $(AB)^+$ mast cells to $GFP^+$ mast cells in the muscle was 25.0% on day 1, but decreased to 0.9% on day 7. Then, it increased to 98.2% on day 35. In contrast,$GFP^+$ mast cells in the mucosa were not detectable on day 1, 3, and 7 after injection. On day 35, the proportion of $AB^+$ mast cells to $GFP^+$ mast cells in the mucosa was 97.0%. When $10^5$ PMCs were injected, the proportion of $AB^+$ mast cells to $GFP^+$ mast cells in the muscle was more than 88.2%, and that in the mucosa was more than 86.3% from day 1 through 35 after injection. These results indicated that percentage of degranulation on day 1, 3, 7, 14 after injection of 500 PMCs was significantly higher than that after injection of $10^5$ PMCs. Futhermore, when 500 PMCs were injected, protease expression phenotypes of PMCs changed from day 14 after injection. When $10^5$ PMCs were injected, protease expression phenotype of PMCs did not change after injection. Such degranulated PMCs may acquire the new phenotype and adapt the new tissue.

음료자동판매기의 그린디자인에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Green Design for a Drink Vending Machine)

  • 국민들의 생활수준 향상에 따른 생활패턴의 변화와 더불어 환경오염 문제가 날로 심각해져 가고 있다. 각종 폐기물의 급증으로 파괴되는 환경의 보전을 도모하기 이해 자원의 절약과 재활용 촉진이 불가피하게 되었다. 이러한 환경문제에 대한 인식과 더불어 국민들의 건강, 환경문제에 대한 인식이 점차 강화되고 무공해에 대한 갈망이 환경상품에 대한 욕구로 대체되어 환경소비주의를 대두시켰다. 음료자동판매기는 일회용 용기를 주로 사용하므로 환경문제와 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있고 따라서 그린디자인이 적용되어야만 하는 제품이다. 본 연구에서는 그린디자인의 배경 및 개념과 음료자동판매기의 분류, 구조 및 환경에 대해 조사하였다. 그것을 배경으로 하여 음료자동판매기의 그린디자인 전개방향에 대한 컨셉을 설정하였고 대안들을 분리수거형과 재사용형으로 선정하였다. 대안들을 다시 벽면부착형, 중앙설치형 및 데스크탑형의 셋 방향으로 포커스 모델을 제시하였다. 결론적으로 음료자동판매기의 디자인을 위해서는 환경 문제 해결을 위한 그린디자인, 사용 성을 높이기 위한 인간 공학적 배려와 주변환경과의 조화를 위한 조형이미지 등에 대한 연구가 필요하다.

Magnesium Uptake by the Green Microalga Chlorella vulgaris in Batch Cultures

  • The accumulation (internal and superficial distribution) of magnesium ions (Mg2+) by the green freshwater microalga Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) was investigated under autotrophic culture in a stirred photobioreactor. The concentrations of the three forms of Mg2+ (dissolved, extracellular, and intracellular) were determined with atomic absorption spectroscopy during the course of C. vulgaris growth. The proportions of adsorbed (extracellular) and absorbed (intracellular) Mg2+ were quantified. The concentration of the most important pigment in algal cells, chlorophyll a, increased over time in proportion to the increase in the biomass concentration, indicating a constant chlorophyll/biomass ratio during the linear growth phase. The mean-average rate of Mg2+ uptake by C. vulgaris grown in a culture medium starting with 16 mg/l of Mg2+ concentration was measured. A clear relationship between the biomass concentration and the proportion of the Mg2+ removal from the medium was observed. Of the total Mg2+ present in the culture medium, 18% was adsorbed on the cell wall and 51% was absorbed by the biomass by the end of the experiment (765 h). Overall, 69% of the initial Mg2+ were found to be removed from the medium. This study supported the kinetic model based on a reversible first-order reaction for Mg2+ bioaccumulation in C. vulgaris, which was consistent with the experimental data.

Late-term healing in an augmented sinus with different ratios of biphasic calcium phosphate: a pilot study using a rabbit sinus model

  • Purpose: The aim of this pilot study was to determine the osteoconductivity and dimensional stability of augmented sinuses using different ratios of biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) in a rabbit sinus model. Methods: Each sinus of New Zealand white rabbits (2.5-3.5 kg) was assigned to one of two groups: BCP with a hydroxyapatite to ${\beta}$-tricalcium phosphate (HA:${\beta}$-TCP) ratio of 70:30 (group TCP30) and BCP with an HA:${\beta}$-TCP ratio of 30:70 (group TCP70). After preparing a window in the antral wall of a sinus, the Schneiderian membrane was elevated, and the applicable material was grafted. A fluorochrome calcein green was injected five days before euthanizing the animals at four months post-surgery. The specimens were analyzed histologically, histomorphometrically, and by using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Results: Micro-CT analysis revealed that the total augmented volume and the new bone volume did not differ significantly between the two groups whereas the resorption of materials was greater in the TCP70 group. The trabecular thickness, number, and separation also did not differ significantly between the two groups. Histomorphometrically, the areas of total augmentation, new bone, and residual material, as well as the ratio of new-bone-material contact did not differ significantly between the groups. Histologically, the residual particles were more scattered in the TCP70 group than in the TCP30 group. The fluorescence of the calcein green did not differ notably between the two groups. Conclusions: The osteoconductivity and dimensional stability of the two BCPs with different ratios tested in this study were comparable after four months of healing. Therefore, we conclude that both BCPs show promise as a bone substitute for sinus augmentation.

Applied Horticultural Biotechnology for the Mitigation of Indoor Air Pollution

  • Exposure to indoor air pollution is an emerging world-wide problem, with growing evidence that it is a major cause of morbidity worldwide. Whilst most indoor air pollutants are of outdoor origin, these combine with a range of indoor sourced pollutants that may lead to high pollutant levels indoors. The pollutants of greatest concern are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter (PM), both of which are associated with a range of serious health problems. Whilst current buildings usually use ventilation with outdoor air to remove these pollutants, botanical systems are gaining recognition as an effective alternative. Whilst many years research has shown that traditional potted plants and their substrates are capable of removing VOCs effectively, they are inefficient at removing PM, and are limited in their pollutant removal rates by the need for pollutants to diffuse to the active pollutant removal components of these systems. Active botanical biofiltration, using green wall systems combined with mechanical fans to increase pollutant exposure to the plants and substrate, show greatly increased rates of pollutant removal for both VOCs, PM and also carbon dioxide ($CO_2$). A developing body of research indicates that these systems can outperform existing technologies for indoor air pollutant removal, although further research is required before their use will become widespread. Whilst it is known that plant species selection and substrate characteristics can affect the performance of active botanical systems, optimal characteristics are yet to be identified. Once this research has been completed, it is proposed that active botanical biofiltration will provide a cheap and low energy use alternative to mechanical ventilations systems for the maintenance of indoor environmental quality.
