  • Preference of stink bugs to various leguminous seeds was evaluated by using VTS (Video Tracking System) in laboratory. Major soybean stink bugs such as bean bug, Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius), one-banded stink bug, Piezodorus hybneri (Gmelin), eastern green stink bug, Nezara antennata (Scott), and sole bug, Dolycoris baccarum (L.) were significantly most attracted to Cheongjakong, a soybean variety, baited fish-net trap, followed by soybean varieties Ilpumgeomjeongkong and Taekwangkong, a peanut variety Daekwangdangkong, a kidney bean variety Gangnangkong, and a adzuki bean variety Jungwonpat, respectively in a soybean field. VTS observation in laboratory showed that R. pedestris and D. baccarum had significantly higher frequency of visit on Cheongjakong, followed by Ilpumgeomjeongkong. However, P. hybneri, N. antennata and Halyomorpha halys (Stal) had significantly higher number of visits on Cheongjakong, Seonnogkong and Jinpumkong, followed by Ilpumgeomjeongkong. The sojourned time of stink bugs, however, was significantly longer on Cheongjakong regardless of species of the bugs. Accordingly, Cheongjakong was evaluated as the most preferred soybean seed by fish-net trap and VTS. Thus, VTS is found to be an effective means to evaluate the food preference of stink bugs.

  • This study was evaluated the effect of attractant or repellent plants for establishing push-pull strategy for insect pest management of organic Chinese cabbage cultivation. The attractant or repellent effect of Ten plants, marigold, rye, Chinese chive, lettuce, chicory, Nongwoo-chicory, crown daisy, Treviso, green leaf mustard, and red leaf mustard were evaluated against diamondback moth, striped flea beetle, aphids, brown-winged stink bug and cabbage stink bug in organic Chinese cabbage field in Seosan in 2012. Of the ten repellent or attractant plants, rye and chicory attracted significantly brown-winged stink bug and cabbage stink bug, respectively. Aphids ate attracted significantly to the rye rather than the other plants. Leaf mustard was attracted cabbage stink bug and brown-winged stink bug in order. Cabbage stink bug was attracted by only a combination of lettuce and Chinese chive. Diamondback moth, striped flea beetle, aphid, brown-winged stink bug and cabbage stink bug were significantly repelled by single or combined cultivation of crown daisies, Treviso, and leaf mustard in organic Chinese cabbage cultivation. The results above-mentioned indicate that selected insect-attractant and -repellent plants can be used as tools for integrated pest managements of Chinese cabbage.

  • This study was conducted to develope the observing methods for density of stink bugs in soybean reproductive stage. The adults and nymphs of bean bug, Riptortus clavatus, red-banded shield bug, Piezodous hybneri, green stink bug, Nezara antennata, Sole bug, Dolycoris baccarum, and brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys were observed by three observing methods such as beating, sweeping net, and visual counting methods in the full bloom (R2), full pod (R4) and beginning maturity (R7) of soybean. As a result, total number of stink bugs observed was the highest with 5,214.2 by beating method, and then was 2,581.8 by visual counting method, and was the lowest with 103.1 by sweeping net method. Total number of stink bugs observed by the beating and visual counting methods was P. hybneri, followed by N. antennata, H. halys, R. clavatus and D. baccarum with clear difference in observed number of each stink bugs while total number of stink bugs observed by sweeping net method was very low in the range of 18 to 23. Accordingly, the observed density of stink bugs exception of R. clavatus adult by beating method was generally high. However, the number of R. clavatus adult was more observed by flushing method than that by beating method from the beginning bloom (R1) to full maturity (R8), and was more observed at morning time than that at afternoon time. Therefore, two observation methods that flushing method for R. clavatus and beating method for the other stink bugs were recommended for the occurring density of stink bugs in soybean because both bean bug and pentatomidae stink bugs have distinct behavior characteristics such as flying and dropping.

  • The susceptibility of five stink bugs species collected soybean fields in Milyang in 2006 to seven insecticides was evaluated using electric auto-sprayer. The insecticide deltamethirn had the lowest median lethal concentration ($LC_{50}$) of 0.4 to 2.3 ppm regardless of stink bugs species while phenthoate had the highest concentration for one-banded stink bug (Piezodorus hybneri), green stink bug (Nezara antennata), sloe bug (Dolycoris baccarum), and brown marmorated stink bug, (Halyomorpha halys); and fenthion for bean bug (Riptortus clavatus). The average $LC_{50}$ for stink bugs to seven insecticides was lowest at 7.5 ppm for R. clavatus, followed by 16.6 ppm for H. halys, 17.6 ppm for D. baccarum, 19.1 ppm for N. antennata, and 28.4 ppm for P. hybneri. The relative tolerance ratio (TR), which is the TR of 90 percent lethal concentration ($LC_{90}$) of stink bugs to the recommended concentration, was the lowest in fipronil for R. clavatus, P. hybneri and D. baccarum; fenitrothion for N. antennata; and fenthion for H. halys. The relative average TR was lowest at 0.09 for R. clavatus, followed by 0.26 for D. baccarum, 0.30 for N. antennata, 0.37 for P. hybneri, and 0.39 for H. halys. Therefore, insecticides susceptibility was highest for R. clavatus and lowest for P. hybneri while the relative average TR was lowest for R. clavatus and highest for H. halys. Accordingly, it is expected that stink bugs can be effectively controlled with by spraying insecticides in soybean field because the relative average TR value of stink bugs was below 1.0, indicating high susceptibility of stink bugs to insecticides.

  • Stink bugs do damage on various crops including upland crops and tree fruits. Especially, yellow-brown stink bug (Halyomorpha halys ($St{\aa}l$)) and brown-winged green (Plautia stali) are severely damaged on apple orchard. Using seven insecticides - dinotefuran WP, etofenprox WP, chlorpyrifos WP, cabaryl WP, chlothianidin SC, flonicamid WG, and bifenthrin WG - registered on apple, contact and residual toxicities were tested on both male and female of P. stali and H. halys that preferred apple fruit. Contact toxicity of dinotefuran WP was excellent on male P. stali 48 hours after treatment (HAT) with 96.7% and significant on male Halyomorpha halys 48 HAT with 74.5% but the others had low effect. Contact toxicity on these stink bugs were higher in male than female. All insecticides except flonicamid, residual effects were all effective on both male and female of P. stali, while chlorpyrifos and bifenthrin were showed higher residual toxicity on both male and female of H. halys in laboratory condition. Two insecticides, chlorpyrifos and bifenthrin, were selected for the field test. Bifenthrin have a high residual effect on P. stali until 5 days after treatment, but have a low residual toxicity on H. halys in the field test. Chlorpyrifos showed higher residual toxicity in the laboratory, however, showed low residual efficacy on two species stink bug onto the field.

  • Attractiveness of stink bugs to various colors, heights and locations of fish-net traps incorporated with aggregation pheromones was determined. Bean bug, Riptortus pedestris Fabricius, was most attracted to yellow color trap, followed by white, black, green, blue and brown. R. pedestris and one-banded stink bug, Piezodorus hybneri Gmelin, were most attracted to fish-net traps placed 80 cm above the ground regardless of sexes of two species of stink bugs. Between the sexes, however, R. pedestris females were more attracted to 40 and 80 cm above the ground than the males at those heights although the attraction was not significantly different at 120 and 160 cm heights. P. hybneri females tended to be attracted to 40 and 80 cm height traps but the attraction was the opposite at 120 and 160 cm heights. The highest attraction of R. pedestris was observed in a perilla field with no significant difference in the soybean field and border area in which no crop were cultivated between the perilla and soybean fields. R. pedestris was also more attracted to the sweet persimmon orchard than the soybean and medicinal crops fields, which was a significant difference between the two fields.

  • The embryonic and postembryonic developments of Nezara antennata Scott were observed in 5 different rearing cages such as A (Cylindrical, ${\phi}\;10cm{\times}4cm$), B (Cylindrical, ${\phi}\;14.5cm{\times}2.8cm$), C (Rectangle, $6.5L{\times}6.5cmW{\times}10cmH$), D (Cylindrical, ${\phi}$ 9cm in bottom & ${\phi}$ 11.5 cm in $upper{\times}10.8cm$) and E (Cylindrical, ${\phi}\;15cm{\times}7.5cm$) containing soybean and peanut seeds as food, and sponge soaked with water under laboratory condition of $24^{\circ}C$ and 15L : 9D. Hatchability ranged from 93 to 97%. Nymphal duration was shortest of 6 days in the 1st instar and longest of 10 days in the 5th instar. The nymphal duration was 38 to 39 days observed in the rearing cages. Emergence rate was in the range from 53 to 62% with highest in A and B cages. Adult longevity was 65 to 75 days for male, and 67 to 74 days for female, and was longest in the B cage. Total number of eggs laid by female adult was in the range from 51 to 56 without significant difference in the rearing cages, and was the most in the B cage. Accordingly, the reproductive rate of N. antennata for 1 generation was within 25 to 33 times, and was highest in the B rearing cage. Therefore, it could be concluded that B cage is most suitable for stable rearing of N. antennata under laboratory condition.

  • The seasonal occurrence trends of the brown-winged green bug, Plautia stali, and the brown malmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys, were monitored in sweet persimmon orchards in southern region of Korea using light traps (in 2000 and 2001), and aggregation pheromone traps (methyl (E, E, Z)-2 ,4, 6-decatrienoate)) of P. stali (in 2001). Light trap data showed that H. halys started to occur from the end of June, and reached its peak in early or mid August, while P. stali was mostly attracted to the traps from mid July to late August without any distinct attraction peak. Both species did not occur after September in the persimmon orchards studied. The attraction patterns of both species to aggregation pheromone traps were different from those observed in light traps. Both species were attracted to the pheromone traps from mid May to late August. The peak occurrence of H. halys could not be detected due to low catches. However, the period of peak attraction for P. stali was from late June to late August depending on the geographical locations. The aggregation pheromone traps of P. stali attracted more number of P stali than H. hails, but the light traps showed a reverse pattern. In both species, more females were attracted to the aggregation pheromone traps than males. The difference of attraction patterns between 2 types of traps was discussed in relation to content of soluble tannin in persimmon fruits.

  • Attractiveness of different amounts of methyl (E,E,Z)-2,4,6-decatrienoate, the aggregation pheromone of brown-winged stink bug, Plautia stali (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), was tested using different kinds of dispensers. A lure filled with hexane was used as a control treatment. There were no differences in the attractiveness of the pheromone to P. stali and Halyomorpha halys among dispensers (polyethylene-vial, rubber septum, and polyethylene tube). Traps baited with 7, 20, 40, 50, and 60 mg of pheromone were tested for their attractiveness. For females, the 40 mg trap attracted highest number of P. stali, even though there were no significant differences among pheromone amounts. For males, the 40 and 50 mg traps attracted significantly more bugs than the 7, 20, and 60 mg traps and the control traps. Based on these results, the pheromone dispenser impregnated with 40 mg of pheromone will be practical in monitoring P. stali in the field.
