  • In this study, a process model and optimization design direction for a hydrogen production plant through ammonia decomposition are presented. If the reactor decomposition rate is designed to approach 100%, the amount of catalyst increases and the devices that make up the entire system also have a large design capacity. However, if the characteristics of the hydrogen regeneration process are reflected in the design of the reactor, it becomes possible to satisfy the total flow rate of fuel gas with the discharged tail gas flow rate. Analyzing the plant process simulation results, it was confirmed that when an appropriate decomposition rate is maintained in the reactor, the phenomenon of excess or shortage of fuel gas disappears. In addition, it became possible to reduce the amount of catalyst required and design the optimized capacity of the relevant processes.

  • The production of hydrogen via water electrolysis (i.e., green hydrogen) using renewable energy is key to the development of a sustainable society. However, most current electrocatalysts are based on expensive precious metals and require the use of highly purified water in the electrolyte. We demonstrated the preparation of a non-precious metal catalyst based on CuCo2O4 (CCO) via simple electrodeposition. Further, an optimization process for electrodeposition potential, solution concentration and electrodeposition method was develop for a catalyst-substrate integrated electrode, which indicated the highly electrocatalytic performance of the material in electrochemical tests and when applied to an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer.

  • Urea oxidation reaction (UOR) via electrochemical oxidation process can replace oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for green hydrogen production since UOR has lower thermodynamic potential (0.37 VRHE) than that of OER (1.23 VRHE). However, in the case of UOR, 6 electrons are required for the entire UOR. For this reason, the reaction rate is slower than OER, which requires 4 electrons. In addition, it is an important challenge to develop catalysts in which both oxidation reactions (UOR and OER) are active since the active sites of OER and UOR are opposite to each other. We prove that among the NiFe2O4 nanoparticles synthesized by the hydrothermal method at various synthesis temperatures, NiFe2O4 nanoparticle with properly controlled particle size and crystallinity can actively operate OER and UOR at the same time.

  • Lithium Ion capacitor (LIC) is a new storage device which combines high power density and high energy density compared to conventional supercapacitors. LIC is capable of storing approximately 5.10 times more energy than conventional EDLCs and also have the benefits of high power and long cycle-life. In this study, LICs are assembled with activated carbon (AC) cathode and pre-doped graphite anode. Cathode material of natural graphite and artificial graphite kinds of MAGE-E3 was selected as the experiment proceeds. Super-P as a conductive agent and PTFE was used as binder, with the graphite: conductive agent: binder of 85: 10: 5 ratio of the negative electrode was prepared. Lithium doping condition of current density of $2mA/cm^2$ to $1mA/cm^2$, and was conducted by varying the doping. Results Analysis of Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer (ICP) was used and a $1mA/cm^2$ current density, $2mA/cm^2$, when more than 1.5% of lithium ions was confirmed that contained. In addition, lithium ion doping to 0.005 V at 10, 20 and $30^{\circ}C$ temperature varying the voltage variation was confirmed, $20^{\circ}C$ cell from the low internal resistance of $4.9{\Omega}$ was confirmed.

  • The electrolyte added the chlorosulfuric acid ($HSO_3Cl$) as an additive was tested for the electrolyte in all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) to increase the thermal stability of electrolyte. The electrolyte property was measured by the CV (cyclic voltammetry) method. The maximum value of a voltage and current density in the electrolyte added $HSO_3Cl$ was higher than that in the electrolyte non-added $HSO_3Cl$. The thermal stability of the pentavalent vanadium ion solution, which was tested at $40^{\circ}C$, increased by adding $HSO_3Cl$. The performances of VRFB using the electrolyte added and non-added $HSO_3Cl$ were measured during 30 cycles of charge-discharge at the current density of $60mA/cm^2$. An average energy efficiency of the VRFB was 72.5%, 82.4%, and 81.6% for the electrolyte non-added $HSO_3Cl$, added 0.5 mol of $HSO_3Cl$, and added 1.0 mol of $HSO_3Cl$, respectively. VRFB using the electrolyte added $HSO_3Cl$ was showed the higher performance than that using the electrolyte non-added $HSO_3Cl$.

  • Hydrogen-dimethy ether(DME) partially premixed compression ignition(PCCI) engine combustion was investigated in a single cylinder compression ignition engine. Hydrogen and DME were used as low carbon alternative fuels to reduce green house gases and pollutant. Hydrogen was injected at the intake manifold with an injection pressure of 0.5 MPa at fixed injection timing, $-210^{\circ}CA$ aTDC. DME was injected directly into the cylinder through the common-rail injection system at injection pressure of 30 MPa. DME inejction timing was varied to find the optimum PCCI combustion to reduce CO, HC and NOx emissions. When DME was injected early, CO and HC emissions were high while NOx emission was low. As the DME injection was retarded, the CO and HC emissions were decreased due to high combustion efficiency. NOx emissions were increased due to the high in-cylinder temperature. When DME were injected at $-30^{\circ}CA$ aTDC, reduction of HC, CO and NOx emissions was possible with high value of IMEP.

  • Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) are parasites that attack many field crops and orchard trees, and affect both the quantity and quality of the products. A root-colonizing bacterium, Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6, possesses beneficial traits including strong nematicidal activity. To determine the molecular mechanisms involved in the nematicidal activity of P. chlororaphis O6, we constructed two mutants; one lacking hydrogen cyanide production, and a second lacking an insecticidal toxin, FitD. Root drenching with wild-type P. chlororaphis O6 cells caused juvenile mortality in vitro and in planta. Efficacy was not altered in the fitD mutant compared to the wild-type but was reduced in both bioassays for the mutant lacking hydrogen cyanide production. The reduced number of galls on tomato plants caused by the wild-type strain was comparable to that of a standard chemical nematicide. These findings suggest that hydrogen cyanide-producing root colonizers, such as P. chlororaphis O6, could be formulated as "green" nematicides that are compatible with many crops and offer agricultural sustainability.

  • New concept ramjet propulsion system with liquid bipropellant rocket using "Green Propellant" hydrogen peroxide for launch stage is proposed. In this novel concept, hydrogen peroxide gas generator produces hot oxygen at launch stage and kerosene injects to this jet in combustor. For basic study of this new concept ramjet system, investigation of auto-ignition characteristics and combustion of decomposed hydrogen peroxide and kerosene was conducted. In various test cases, auto-ignition and stable combustion was verified. The combustion temperature of 400°C and Fuel/Oxidizer mixture ratio of 0.6 were the limit of auto ignition. Through the experiment results, the possibility of novel concept combined propulsion system using hydrogen peroxide gas generator is ascertained.

  • Exploring the basic concepts for the design of CO2-philic molecules is important due to the possibility for “green” chemistry in supercritical CO2 as substitute solvent systems. The Lewis acid-base interactions and C?H…O weak hydrogen bonding were suggested as two key factors for the solubility of CO2-philic molecules. We have performed high level quantum mechanical calculations for the van der Waals complexes of CO2 with trimethylphosphate and trimethylphosphine oxide, which have long been used for metal extractants in supercritical CO2 fluid. Structures and energies were calculated using the MP2/6-31+G(d) and recently developed multilevel methods. These studies indicate that the Lewis acid-base interactions have larger impact on the stability of structure than the C?H…O weak hydrogen bonding. The weak hydrogen bonds in trimethylphosphine oxide have an important role to the large supercritical CO2 solubility when a metal is bound to the oxygen atom of the P=O group. Trimethylphosphate has many Lewis acid-base interaction sites so that it can be dissolved into supercritical CO2 easily even when it has metal ion on the oxygen atom of the P=O group, which is indispensable for a good extractant.

  • The effects of binary solvent mixtures with various ratios of toluene and ethanol on the properties of slurries and green sheets were investigated. Viscosity of slurry was changed by varying the ratio of solvent mixture which affected the solubility of binder. The relative solvency behavior of a solvent mixture could be predicted with the Hildebrand solubility parameter(${\delta}$) and hydrogen bonding index( ${\gamma}$). The minimum viscosity, the best dispersion of binder, was reached at the composition of toluene:ethanol=4:6, which corresponded to our forecast. The mechanical properties of green sheets related to evaporation of solvents were influenced by the composition of the solvent mixture. At the azeotrope the skin was formed on a drying cast during the drying process because of fast evaporation. At a range of concentrations over 50wt% toluene, green sheets could not be fully dried at low temperature due to excessive toluene. The mechanical properties of green sheets were excellent at the azeotrope-like composition of toluene:ethanol=4:6 which has a little excess of toluene over the azeotrope.
