  • We propose a tunable flat-top bandpass filter to pass light in a customized wavelength band by using long-period fiber gratings (LPFG) structure. The LPFG structure is composed of a core mode blocker in between two LPFGs. The bandpass spectrum of the proposed structure is obtained in overlapped wavelength band of two LPFGs operating on the same modes. To analyze the properties, we introduce a mathematical matrix model for the structure. We theoretically demonstrate flexibility of the flat-top bandpass filter with various bandwidths.

  • Specular structural colors generated by two-dimensional periodic binary gratings are investigated theoretically. An approximate mathematical model of the grating specular structural colors is described, based on scalar nonparaxial diffraction theory, and the functional relationships of specular structural color and structural parameters of gratings are analyzed. Through this, the optimal condition for maximizing the color-representation range in the standard CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram is derived.

  • In this study, we studied the gamma-radiation effect of fiber Bragg gratings on the fiber re-coating methods. The fiber Bragg gratings were exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of 100 kGy at the dose rate of 104 Gy/min. In our experimental results, we confirmed that the fiber acrylate re-coating process leads to a slightly lower radiation sensitivity of FBGs.

  • We reported the diffraction analysis of the liquid crystal (LC) binary gratings and the surface anchoring energies for planar and homeotropic alignments. The planar and homeotropic anchoring energies were directly derived based on the linearly distorted director distribution near domain boundaries, in which the distorted lengths correspond to the extrapolation lengths into both planar and homeotropic regions. From the diffraction analysis for the LC binary gratings with various grating periods based on the linearly graded phase model, both distorted lengths into planar and homeotropic regions were simultaneously obtained. In this work, the planar and homeotropic anchoring energies were found to be about $1.4\;{\times}\;10^{-4}\;J/m^2$ and $0.9\;{\times}\;10^{-5}\;J/m^2$, respectively.

  • A tunable band-pass filter of fiber Bragg gratings incorporating the Sagnac loop interferometer configuration is presented. The proposed band-pass filter with extinction ratio 20 dB has practical advantages in terms of price and performance in comparison with the conventional band-pass filter using a circulator.

  • Holographic diffraction gratings which are the core element of the optical instruments such as a spectrophotometer have been fabricated using the photoresist as a recording material. A 488nm line from an argon laser is used in making the gratings. Transmission type surface-relief phase grating and reflection type which is fabsricated by coating the aluminum on the transmission type with thickness 2000\ulcornerare fabricated, the spatical frequency of which are 1200 lines/mm. Diffraction efficiency, scattered light and wave-front aberratin are measured to test the performance of the developed gratings. A marimum diffraction efficiency is given when light is incident at the Bragg angle. Theoretical efficiency is about 80%, but measured efficiency of the transmission type and reflection type is 50% and 45%, respectively.

  • High diffraction efficiency holographic gratings in silver halide emulsion were fabricated by using reversal bleaching process. The diffraction efficiencies of gratings were improved greatly by applying rapid drying procedure with isopropyl alcohol after bleaching with optimized developers. The dependency of diffraction efficiencies on the different groups of developers, the concentration of bleaching solutions, and the drying methods are investigated experimentally and the results were analyzed theoretically. Same as usual reversal bleaching process, the fabricated gratings showed very low scttering compared to those made by conventional bleach process. The maximum diffraction efficiency was 88%.

  • A holographic demultiplexer aimed at producing low polarization dependence loss using a long period volumetric diffraction grating inside photopolymer has been reported and experimentally demonstrated. To obtain the long period gratings, two kinds of gratings are recorded by angle of $4^{\circ}\;and\;6^{\circ}$ corresponding to the polarization dependence property of below 0.5 dB. From the experimental results, we demonstrate the 0.8 nm-spaced 21 channel holographic demultiplexer with the polarization dependence loss of less than -0.38 dB, the channel uniformity of 0.495 dB, and the channel crosstalk of -13 dB.

  • A novel optical coupling filter with finite-thickness metal-strip gratings printed on optical planar dielectric slabs is proposed, and Bragg conditions of the device are rigorously evaluated by using Modal Transmission-Line Theory (MTLT). The numerical results reveal that the guiding structures have filtering properties due to a leaky-wave stop-band while conventional DFB guiding structures consisted of dielectric gratings depend on a feedback-wave stop-band. Consequently, it shows that the optical coupling titter dependent on the leaky-wave filtering characteristics can be compounded of such optical devices as LD and optical fiber.

  • Holographic gratings in two kinds of photopolymers (PPs) were fabricated by optical interference method. Polyvinylalcohol (PVA) and polyvinylacetate (PVAc) were employed as polymer binders and photopolymerization of acrylamide (AA) was confirmed using infrared spectroscopy. Dynamic behavior of the diffraction efficiency was monitored and its temporal stability at room temperature was also observed. Additionally, the temperature dependence of these gratings was investigated in two PPs. The surface topographical change of the photopolymer layer was observed by atomic force microscope (AFM).
