  • We report the formation of inner cladding modes in the optical fiber having an inner cladding structure. The inner cladding layer located between the core- and the cladding- layers of a conventional fiber might have, so called, inner cladding mode(s). The brief history of the inner cladding fiber and the spectral properties of the inner cladding mode are presented. By utilizing fiber gratings, the spectral properties of the inner cladding mode formed in Dispersion Compensating Fiber (DCF) are discussed. It was observed that one resonant peak of a long-period fiber grating was not sensitive to the variation on the cladding surface. With a fiber Bragg grating, a small group of unusual resonant Peaks was observed between the main Bragg Peak and the series of usual Peaks resulted from the mode coupling to counter-propagating cladding modes. Within the DCF by using fiber gratings, it is noted, at least one mode can be coupled to the inner cladding mode and a few outer cladding modes are severely affected by the inner cladding of the fiber.

  • We present the precise visual measurement method of rotational displacements using two different moire fringes simultaneously generated by repeated sinusoidal gratings. We investigate the variation of moire fringes depending on rotational displacements through computer simulation and experiment using a rotator in detail. The moire fringes are composed of the wide linear fringe part with a long period and the narrow linear fringe part with a short period. These parts are superior to the angle detection of more than 12 degrees and less than 12 degree, respectively. Additionally, the method can be visually used in the determination of the rotational direction by observing the moire fringe's direction.

  • We have studied the hybrid method for reconstructing apodized chirped fiber Bragg gratings, using both an analytic estimation of grating parameters and an optimization algorithm. The Hilbert transform of the reflection spectrum was utilized to estimate grating parameters, and then the layer-peeling algorithm was used to obtain refined parameter values by the differential-evolution optimization process. Calculations for a fiber Bragg grating with wavelength chirp rate 2 nm/cm were obtained with an accuracy of $6{\times}10^{-5}nm/cm$ for the chirp rate and $3{\times}10^{-9}nm/cm$ for the index modulation, with much improved calculation speed and high reliability.

  • A gutter-shaped U grating is a facility that is installed at the sides of a road to provide pedestrians with a rainwater-free road. The previous studies on this facility focused mainly on the progress of the efforts that are being made to improve its performance and interception efficiency so as to prevent damages in regional areas due to the heavy rains caused by climate change. The studies on its maintenance, however, are still inadequate. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze and compare the life cycle costs and performance evaluations of the steel and magic gratings, which are installed in apartments. The results of the study show that the replacement period and rate of gratings differ depending on where they are installed. The initial capital investment cost of a magic grating installed at a road where many vehicles pass is quite high, but in terms of its maintenance and entire-life-cycle costs, its total expenses are lower than those of a steel grating. The results of this study are expected to serve as preliminary data for the selection of an adequate grating that is suitable for particular places in the design phase of construction projects.

  • We propose a centralized passive-optical-network monitoring scheme using the resonance-spectrum properties of a Fabry-Perot cavity based on fiber Bragg gratings. Each cavity consists of two identical uniform fiber Bragg gratings and a varying cavity length or grating length, which can produce a unique single-mode resonance spectrum for the drop-fiber link. The output spectral properties of each cavity can be easily adjusted by the cavity length or the grating length. The resonance spectrum for each cavity is calculated by the transfer-matrix method. To obtain the peak wavelength of the resonance spectrum more accurately, the effective cavity length is introduced. Each drop fiber with a specific resonance spectrum distinguishes between the peak wavelength or linewidth. We also investigate parameters such as reflectivity and bandwidth, which determine the basic performance of the fiber Bragg grating used, and thus the output-spectrum properties of the Fabry-Perot cavity. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is verified using the Optisystem software for a simplified 1 × 8 passive optical network. The proposed scheme provides a simple, effective solution for passive-optical-network monitoring, especially for a high-density network with small end-user distance difference.

  • Photosensitive amorphous materials are attractive for the formation of several optical elements by a specific laser beam irradiation. For example the optical fiber gratings prepared by UV laser irradiation are one of the key elements for the recent worldwide progress of wavelength division mutiplexing optical fiber network. This paper reviews the representative studies on the photosensitive materials and the origin of photosensitivity in amorphous oxide materials.

  • Diffraction modes of holographic grating were fabricated with polyurethane acrylates(PUA). Two types of silica (AEROSIL 200 and AEROSIL R812) were added to reduce the shrinkage of polymer matrix. It was founded that shrinkage of PUA composite film was reduced with the addition of silica. HPDLC based PUA/silica composite also showed high diffraction efficiency. The morphology of the resultant gratings was analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and Tg of the polymer matrix by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis(DMTA).

  • In this paper we fabricated a fiber device composed of cascaded long-period fiber gratings between which a birefringent erbium-doped fiber was inserted and proposed its application as a polarization-controlled interleaved signal gating fiber device. Because the core and cladding modes of the fabricated fiber device have polarization-dependent phase difference due to the birefringence of the erbium-doped fiber, its interference spectrum can be modulated by varying the input polarization.
