  • Mt. Apsan is well known to be one of the most popular tourist sites around Daegu. Annually, more than 16 million persons visit Mt. Apsan. Although, in the mountain there are varieties of geomorphic and geological resources, there has been less concern to utilize the resources for geo-tourism. For example, there are about 10 valleys within Mt. Apsan and various landforms are scattered around the valleys. In this context, this study, based on field surveys centering around Gosangol valley, Anjiranggol valley and Dalbigol valley, focuses on exploring ways towards developing Mt. Apsan as an example geo-tourist site. The main findings are as follows: 1) The main landforms of Mt. Apsan include river cliff, cavern, free face, mud crack, ripple mark, fold, sheeting joint, talus, alluvial fan, pot hole, fault line, gnamma, columnar joint and metamorphic rock. 2) The guide notes on the landforms are developed. 3) In order to raise a learning effect of visitors on geomorphic resources, 9 nature trails are designed according to valleys and the length of visitor's stay.

  • This study, which starting from Yangyang Jukdo's topography formation and questioning revealed in landscape guide and landscape commentary board, is to sort out the characteristics of Jukdo natural landscape through literature research, field observation research and stakeholder interview as part of the proper recognition of Jokdo landscape and search for landscape resources, and pursued a review of nominations and criticism. The results of this study are summarized as follows. Yangyang Jukdo is an island named because it was full of blue bamboo. From before the first half of the 14th Century. to the middle of the 18th Century., there was a Gwanlan-pavilion to see the sea and the bamboo in the west. The time when the original island, the Jukdo, have been a land-tied island connected with the land by the tombolo formed by the erosion of the sand. It is located at the end of the 14th Century. and before the middle of the 18th Century. In Jukdo, colorful weathered terrains, coastal terrain, and structural terrain formed by long-time weathering are found. Among them, the type of weathering, the tafoni style and the gnamma style are the scenic landscapes with the key stories of legend and poetry that are brought to Jukdo. In addition, there are seven kinds of letters caved in the rocks in Jukdo. The rocks found on the coast, basketball cannons, shrines, and sutras are seen as shrouds based on a Taoist hermit motifs and style. In addition, it can be interred from the photography of "jeongssisejeog" that the souvenir of Jukdo was the family of Chogyejeong of mid 18th Century. In terms of observational geography and poetry, Jukdo has been handed down a great deal of missionary color with key motifs such as 'Jukdo-seongoo', 'Jukdo-Dolgooyoo', or 'Stone mortar of Taoist hermit' It is proved that the pearl which is called 'The stone of the Taoist hermit' is a porthole formed in a separate space rather than the topography of the geomorphology in terms of shape, size and function. Currently named Shun-tang is a product of the ridiculous 'naming' of interest. The present landscape guide and commentary is not only incompatible with the place of Jukdo, but also does not match the traditional cultural landscape. Future scenery information such as guide signs and commentary boards should be improved in the direction of positively highlighting the stories and motifs related to the present that are present in order to enhance the landscape identity of Yangyang Jukdo.

  • Even though various geological attractions are distributed domestically, the geological attractions are rarely utilized as field course site. The purpose of this study is to make Seonangbawi area as the field course site after geological investigations are carried out in detail. Seonangbawi is located about 1km southeast from Songjiho beach in Gangwon-do. Seonangbawi area is simply composed of Cretaceous Seokcho granite with the overlay of Quaternary alluvium. Geological field course in the Seonangbawi area will be useful to the student and citizen for developing the knowledge of geological phenomena, such as the formation of granite and minerals, and weathering process. In addition, the student and citizen can develop the knowledge of the geological structures, such as joint (N50E/80NW, N40W/84SW), fault (N42W/83SW), foliation (N32E/54SE), and dyke (N35E/40SE, N26W/63SW), and geographical features, such as tor, taforni, groove, and gnamma in the field. Accordingly, the Seonangbawi area is the best place to learn various geological and geographical phenomena and to discuss the origin of Seonangbawi with limited space.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate a feasibility of a small mountain as a field work site on geological features in Earth sciences classes at all levels. Mt. Geumdang with the height of 305 meters from the sea level is located in the metropolitan city of Gwangju, southern part of Korea. The study reviews the human and natural geography, geological features, geomorphic resources, landscapes, and conveniences of the mountain for a possibility of meaningful field work. The population within the distance of 5 km from the mountain stands at about 620,000 and 170,000 of them are students and teachers. Mt. Geumdang has a warm temperature climate with low rainfall throughout the year, so it seems suitable for a field survey. Road network and public transportation system around the area are well-developed and easily accessible. Mt. Geumdang shows various rock type and geological structures. The basement rock is Gwangju granite, which is plutonic body of the Jurassic period. Also, granophyre (micrographic granite) and various volcanic rocks distributed as bedded tuff, lapilli tuff, and rhyolite of the Cretaceous period. Many andesitic and felsic dykes were intruded into the rock by joint system. In Mt. Geumdang, many geomorphic resources are found such as U shaped mountain, joint, fault, lamination, gnamma, tor, cliff, groove, block stream and block field, regolith, and saprolite. It has a beautiful mountain scenery including the view of whole shape of Mt. Mudeung, panoramic view of the town, Pungam lake, World Cup stadium and sunrise and sunset. Furthermore, the area has ecologic study facilities related to geology, emergency medical and convenience facilities for field works. In conclusion, Mt. Geumdang is highly feasible for geological field studies at all levels.

  • In order to reveal formation factors and developmental processes of tafoni this study was conducted with petrological analysis including microscopic observation, measurement of water content and water analysis at Golgulsa temple in Gyeongju, South Korea. The direction of the entrance to tafoni at Golgulsa temple tends to coincide with the direction of slope, and this is thought to be related to the direction of wind flow and water supply. Tafoni's initial developmental processes is judged to have grown as a result of a breakaway of rock fragments along with beddings and cracks in rock. Then, tafoni have been enlarged along at the spots that sufficiently accommodate water supply depending on the direction of wind. The results of water analysis of the stagnant water in gnamma implies that a high meltage of Na and Cl compared to other inland areas can be from the adjacent shore. The effects of such saline substances on rock weathering and development of taponi are currently under way through electronic microscopy and geochemical analysis.

  • In this study we examined the geomorphological and geological characteristics of the granite landforms in the Iksan area. Moreover we investigated the source areas of stones which are used to build the Mieruksaji west stone pagoda. Joint is most identifiable geomorphological and geological structure in the Iksan area. Direction of J1 joint appears to be N71°E∼EW, and that of J2 joint ranges N20°W∼N20°E. Cross-pattern joint is predominant in the study area, and linen.-pattern vertical joint is also observed. Tor and corestone are easily found as geomorphological features in the study area. Corestones forming for are almost 2∼3 m across and 2∼3 m or over 5 m high. Their hardness is mainly of hammer bounce. Tower-type and castle-type of for are characteristic in the Mireuksan granites. Other geomorphological features such as tafoni, gnamma are also observed in the study area. Petrographical and geochemical features of the stones used for the Mireuksaji west stone pagoda are compared with those of the granites cropped out nearby, and indicate that the stones from the Mieruksaji west stone pagoda are quite similar to the Mireuksan granites. In the Mireuksan we can easily find lots of old traces for rock cutting.

  • In this study, a total of 80 rock formations in the romantic road(Nangmangado) were investigated and analyzed and the results are as follows. The area in where the rock formations landscape is seen the most is Yangyang(43 formations), and the formations are most densely concentrated in Jukdo beach when seen from the site group. The most observed landform is weathering landform(61%) and the rest is comprised of coastal landform(24%) and structural landform(15%). For weathering landform, Tafoni takes up the largest portion (33%) and is followed by Corestone(27%), Tor(22%), Gnamma(10%), Groove(4%) and Exfoliation(4%). Considering academic value, rarity and accessibility overall, the 35 landforms are expected to have high utility value as tourism resources and topography filed course. And out of these 35 landforms, 11 are concentrated in Dongsan beach in Yangyang. Therefore, it seems worthy to consider developing Dongsan beach under the name of "Dongsan Coast Rock Park(Tentative Name)" to be actively utilized as tourism resources. The landforms which are evaluated as highly valuable for geomorphology filed course are a total of 16 areas including Fan rock and Op rock formations. In these areas, typical weathering landforms are concentrated in one spot and two or three other types of landform can also be additionally observed, allowing the place to be highly efficient for field education.
