  • Many interference in blood should be considered for non-invasive blood glucose level monitoring by near-infrared spectroscopy because blood glucose concentration is about 0.1% (w/v) in normal state. In this study, we investigated the influence of other blood components on blood glucose level monitoring by near-infrared spectroscopy. It carried out by newly developed portable type-NIR system (1100∼2200 nm). Spectrum features of NIR diffuse spectral data were investigated for some blood compnents powder such as hemoglobin, blood serum albumin, urea, uric acid, ascorbate, glucose, cholesterol and as adding glucose powder into other blood components powder mixture. • In electrochemical glucose sensing, the enhancement of the sensitivity and the response time is essential in developing stable and reliable sensors, especially for continuous glucose monitoring. We developed a method to increase the sensitivity and to shorten the response time for the sensing upon the appropriate addition of single wall carbon nanotube onto the osmium polymer-based hydrogel electrode. Also, the background stabilization is dramatically enhanced.

  • Commercially available continuous glucose sensors require the operation stability for more than two weeks. Typically, the sensor comprises a sensing layer and an over-coating layer for the stable operation inside the body. In the sensing layer, enzymes and mediators are cross-linked together for the effective sensing of the glucose. The over-coating layer limits the flux of glucose and works as a biocompatible layer to the body fluids. Here, we report the simple preparation of the flux-limiting layer by the condensation of polyethyleneimine (PEI), tri-epoxide linker, and trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether (PTGE). The sensor is constructed by a layer-by-layer drop-coating of the sensing layer containing glucose dehydrogenase and the PEI-derived blocking layer. It is stable for more than 14 days, which is enough for the sensor in the continuous monitor glucose monitoring (CGM) system.

  • Diabetes mellitus is an abnormally high glucose level in the bloodstream. Several pharmaceuticals are administered to diabetic patients to control their glucose levels. Early diagnosis and proper glycemic management are essential in this situation to prevent further progression and complications. Biosensor-based detection has progressed and shown potential in portable and inexpensive daily assessment of glucose levels because of its simplicity, low cost, and convenient operation without sophisticated instrumentation. This review discusses various systemic aspects of non-invasive glucose monitoring, including materials for monitoring and managing diabetes.

  • An animall health monitoring system in Gyeongnam area(near Chinju) was studied to analysis of biochemical risk factors in 617 herds. Clinical serum factors such as glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase(GOT), glutamate pyruvate transaminase(GPT), Ca, P, Mg, glucose, and cholesterol were measured with automatic biochemical analyzer(Ra-X7T Techmmicon, USA). In serum analysis, 613 cattle were within normal llimits(GOT: 9.5-85 IU-dl, GPT: 25-77IU/dl, total protein: 5.8-8.5g/dl, Ca: 4.2-12.4mg/dl, P: 4.6-9.7mg/dl, Mg: 1.5-3.0mg/dl, glucose: 48-120mg/dl, Cholesterol: 70-170mg/dl), the other cattle showed high glucose and high cholesterol level. It is proposed that clinical serum factors to be estimated may be valuable for developing of animal health monitoring system model.

  • Purpose: The purpose of study was to compare blood glucose in capillary finger-prick blood and gingival crevice blood using a self-monitoring blood glucose device among patients with gingivitis or periodontitis. Methods: Thirty patients with gingivitis or periodontitis and bleeding on probing (BOP) were chosen. The following clinical periodontal parameters were noted: probing depth, BOP, gingival bleeding index, and periodontal disease index. Blood samples were collected from gingival crevicular blood (GCB) and capillary finger-prick blood (CFB). These samples were analyzed using a glucose self-monitoring device. Results: Descriptive statistical analysis has been carried out in the present study. Data were analyzed using a Pearson's correlation coefficient and Student's t-test. A r-value of 0.97 shows very strong correlation between CFB and GCB, which was statistically highly significant (P<0.0001). Conclusions: The authors conclude that GCB may serve as potential source of screening blood glucose during routine periodontal examination in populations with an unknown history of diabetes mellitus.

  • A highly interferent-resistive membrane, poly-5-amino-1-naphthol (poly-5A1N), underlied beneath enzymeembedded poly-1,3-phenylendiamine (poly-m-PD) network for miniturized continuous monitoring glucose sensors. The enzyme layer was prepared from a mixed solution of glucose oxidase (GOx) and m-PD monomer by simple electrolysis. The mass change of poly-5A1N was monitored by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) in situ and the corresponding thickness was measured. Successive electropolymerization of poly-5A1N and poly-m-PD create a several tens nm-thick bilayer showing excellent selectivity for $H_2O_2$ and low activity loss of immobilized enzymes.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the effects of continuous self monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) on glycemic control in diabetic patients. Methods: Among the diabetic patients who visited the department of internal medicine in H hospital from April 1 to October 27 2008, 76 patients were divided into the experimental group (n=39) and control group (n=36). The experimental group was required to measure blood glucose levels at least twice every other day using SMBG; their compliance was aided by weekly telephone reminders for 3 months after discharge. Glycated hemoglobin, fasting blood sugar and postprandial 2 hours glucose level, triglyceride and high density lipoprotein were measured before and after the study. Results: Baseline characteristics were not different between the experimental and control groups. Three months later, there was a significant difference in postprandial glucose between the two groups (t=-2.042, p=.045). Conclusion: There was significant improvement of glycemic control after the use of continuous SMBG, suggesting its value in strict glycemic control and the merit of an aggressive education program.

  • Rapid strides are being made to bring to reality the technology of wearable sensors for monitoring patients' physiological data.We study the problem of automatically detecting anomalies in themeasured blood glucose levels. The normal daily measurements of the patient are used to train a hidden Markov model (HMM). The structure of the HMM-its states and output symbols-are selected to accurately model the typical transitions in blood glucose levels throughout a 24-hour period. The learning of the HMM is done using historic data of normal measurements. The HMM can then be used to detect anomalies in blood glucose levels being measured, if the inferred likelihood of the observed data is low in the world described by the HMM. Our simulation results show that our technique is accurate in detecting anomalies in glucose levels and is robust (i.e., no false positives) in the presence of reasonable changes in the patient's daily routine.
