  • This paper studies relationship between global warming and trends of typhoon variation by using the meteorological long-term data. The results show that yearly mean typhoon's occurrence numbers decrease and maximum wind speeds strengthen gradually. These results are in accord with most of simulated results. While the normal course of typhoon is increased, the westward course of that is decreased. Typhoon trajectories show that the ratios of normal course 6 : westward course 3 : abnormal course 1 in the last 10 years. Among typhoons which affect to the Korea ones pass through the southern coast of Korea are the most. The numbers of typhoon pass through the western coast of Korea are decreased and those pass through the eastern coast of Korea show increasing trend lately. The notable point in relation to the global warming is that typhoon intensity is strengthened gradually. Watch and counterplan in the viewpoint of prevention to the meteorological disasters are required.

  • This paper presents experimental and numerical analysis results regarding the effects of an incomplete penetration defect on the fatigue lives of socket welded pipes. For the experiment, four-point bending fatigue tests with various defect geometries (defect depth and circumferential length) were performed, and test results are presented in terms of stress-life data. The results showed that for circumferentially short defects, the fatigue life tends to increase with increasing crack depth, but for longer defects, the trend becomes the opposite. Finite element analysis showed that for short defects, the maximum principal stress decreases with increases in crack depth. For a longer defect, the opposite trend was found. Furthermore, the maximum principal stress tends to increase with an increase in defect length regardless of the defect depth.

  • During summer (JJA) of 2004, a record-high temperature in Korea appeared at Miryang ($38.5^{\circ}C$ on July 30). Moreover, Miryang showed the most frequent occurrence (25 days in JJA) of the daily highest temperature among observational sites in Korea. Based on meteorological analysis, it is found that this phenomenon is caused by neither the global warming effect nor the urban climate effect. It is caused by the mesoscale and synoptic and/or global scale atmospheric circulations, as evidenced by several factors described below. Firstly, the hottest areas have normally occurred not at a point but over an area, particularly along an axis connecting Sancheong and Daegu. But in 2004, this axis has moved southward and locates over Namhae-Miryang due to northerlies that were induced by the heating effect related to the low snow-cover on the Tibet Plateau. Secondly, although the maximum temperature was the highest among observational sites in Korea, the daily mean temperature and the number of nights with air temperature over $25^{\circ}C$ were not the highest at Miryang. Thirdly, the downdraft induced by the second circulation of typhoon and abnormal development of the North-Pacific High were found to have exerted an important role.

  • In this study, in order to analyze the possibility of observing a typhoon track based on the Global Navigation Satellite System(GNSS), Typhoon NARI, the 11th typhoon of 2007, was analyzed in terms of the typhoon track as well as the local variation of perceptible water over time. The perceptible water was estimated using data obtained from observatories located on the typhoon track from Jeju to the southern coast of Korea for a total of 18 days from September 7(DOY 250) to September 24(DOY 267), 2007, including the period when the observatories were affected by the typhoon at full-scale, as well as one previous week and one following week. The results show that the trend of the variation of perceptible water was similar between the observatories near the typhoon track. Variation of perceptible water over time depending on the development and landing of the typhoon was distinctively observed. Several hours after the daily maximum of perceptible water was found at the JEJU Observatory, the first struck by the typhoon on the typhoon track, the maximum value was found at other observatories located on the southern coast. In the observation period, the time point at which the maximum perceptible water was recorded in each location was almost the same as the time point at which the typhoon landed at the location. To analyze the accuracy of the GNSS-based perceptible water measurement, the data were compared with radiosonde-based perceptible water data. The mean error was 0.0cm, and the root mean square error and the standard deviation were both 0.3cm, indicating that the GNSS-based perceptible water data were highly accurate and precise. The results of the this study show that the GNSS-based perceptible water data may be used as highly accurate information for the analysis of typhoon tracks over time.

  • This study examines the capability of the WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model in reproducing heavy rainfall that developed over the Korean peninsula on 26-27 June 2005. The model is configured with a triple nesting with the highest horizontal resolution at a 3-km grid, centered at Yang-dong, Gyeonggi-province, which recorded the rainfall amount of 376 mm. In addition to the control experiment employing realistic orography over Korea, two consequent sensitivity experiments with 1) no orography, and 2) no land over Korea were designed to investigate orographic effects on the development of heavy rainfall. The model was integrated for 48 hr, starting at 1200 UTC 25 June 2005. The overall features of the large-scale patterns including a cyclone associated with the heavy rainfall are reasonably reproduced by the control run. The spatial distribution of the simulated rainfall over Korea agreed fairly well with the observed. The amount of predicted maximum rainfall at the 3-km grid is 377 mm, which located about 50 km southeast from the observed point, Yang-Dong, indicating that the WRF model is capable of predicting heavy rainfall over Korea at the cloud resolving resolutions. Further, it was found that the complex orography over the Korean peninsula plays a role in enhancing the rainfall intensity by about 10%. The land-sea contrast over the peninsula was fund to be responsible for additional 10% increase of rainfall amount.

  • Causing by green house gas emission, global warming is being accelerated significantly. This global warming cause world climate to change quiet different than before and we call this phenomenon is Climate Change. Environmental Impact Assessment being implemented in Korea is to prevent predicted environmental impacts from deteriorating within the domestic information and situation. As the climate change is getting severe, new meteorological records can be occurred which is exceeded existing statistical data. According to KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) data, maximum value of precipitation and temperature in many regions changed with new data within last decade. And these events accompanied with landslides and flooding, and these also affected on water quality in rivers and lakes. According to impacts by climate change, disasters and accidents from heavy rain are the most apprehensive parts. And water pollution caused by overflowed non-point sources during heavy rain fall, fugitive dust caused by long-term drought, and sea level rise and Tsunami may affect on seaside industrial complex should be worth consideration. In this review, necessity of mutual consideration with influences of climate change was considered adding on existing guideline.

  • We present a new point-diffraction interferometer, which has been devised for the three-dimensional profile measurement of light scattering rough surfaces. The interferometer system has multiple sources of two-point-diffraction and a CCD camera composed of an array of two-dimensional photodetectors. Each diffraction source is an independent two-point-diffraction interferometer made of a pair of single-mode optical fibers, which are housed in a ceramic ferrule to emit two spherical wave fronts by means of diffraction at their free ends. The two spherical wave fronts then interfere with each other and subsequently generate a unique fringe pattern on the test surface. A He-Ne source provides coherent light to the two fibers through a 2${\times}$l optical coupler, and one of the fibers is elongated by use of a piezoelectric tube to produce phase shifting. The xyz coordinates of the target surface are determined by fitting the measured phase data into a global model of multilateration. Measurement has been performed for the warpage inspection of chip scale packages (CSPs) that are tape-mounted on ball grid arrays (BGAs) and backside profile of a silicon wafer in the middle of integrated-circuit fabrication process. When a diagonal profile is measured across the wafer, the maximum discrepancy turns out to be 5.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with a standard deviation of 1.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

  • The paper describes results of a sensitivity study on an optimum mooring cost as a function of safety factor and allowable maximum offset of the offshore floating structure by finding the anchor leg component size and the declination angle. A harmony search (HS) based mooring optimization program was developed to conduct the study. This mooring optimization model was integrated with a frequency-domain global motion analysis program to assess both cost and design constraints of the mooring system. To find a trend of anchor leg system cost for the proposed sensitivity study, optimum costs after a certain number of improvisation were found and compared. For a case study a turret-moored FPSO with 3 ${\times}$ 3 anchor leg system was considered. To better guide search for the optimum cost, three different penalty functions were applied. The results show that the presented HS-based cost-optimum offshore mooring design tool can be used to find optimum mooring design values such as declination angle and horizontal end point separation as well as a cost-optimum mooring system in case either the allowable maximum offset or factor of safety varies.

  • The global navigation satellite system (GNSS), which is the core technique for the location based service, adopts the direct sequence/spread spectrum (DS/SS) as its modulation method. The success of a DS/SS system depends on the synchronization between the received and locally generated pseudo noise (PN) signals. As a step in the synchronization process, the tacking scheme performs fine adjustment to bring the phase difference between the two PN signals to zero. The most widely used tracking scheme is the delay locked loop with early minus late discriminator (EL-DLL). In the ideal case, the EL-DLL is the best estimator among various DLL. However, in the band-limited multipath environment, the EL-DLL has tracking bias. In this paper, the timing offset range of correlation function is divided into advanced offset range (AOR) and delayed offset range (DOR) centering around the correct synchronization time point. The tracking bias results from the following two reasons: symmetry distortion between correlation values in AOR and DOR, and mismatch between the time point corresponding to the maximum correlation value and the synchronization time point. The former and latter are named as the type I and type II tracking bias, respectively. In this paper, when the receiver has finite bandwidth in the presence of multipath signals, it is shown that the type II tracking bias becomes a more dominant error factor than the type I tracking bias, and the correlation values in AOR are not almost changed. Exploiting these characteristics, we propose a novel tracking bias mitigation scheme and demonstrate that the tracking accuracy of the proposed scheme is higher than that of the conventional scheme, both in the presence and absence of noise.
