The Effects of Parental Nurturing Attitudes on Gifted and Nongifted Children's Self-Esteem (부모 양육태도가 영재교육대상자와 일반 학생의 자아존중감에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aims to analyze the influence of parents' nurturing attitude on the children's self-esteem by comparing and analyzing the self-esteem of target children of gifted and talented education (GATE) and nongifted children with parents' nurturing attitude. The targets of this study are total 656 children in total. This study can be summarized as below. First, the self-esteem of target children of GATE turned out to be higher than that of nongifted children in overall, social, domestic and school life. Second, the nurturing attitude of parents felt by the target children of GATE is, from both father and mother, more affectionate, autonomous, achievement-oriented and rational. The parents of target children of GATE are more free in communication and fathers are aggressively in education; compared to parents of nongifted children, they put more importance on the course of achievement and help their children's achievement with actual way compared to the parents of nongifted children. Third, the relevance between self-esteem and parents' nurturing attitude is different in sub-areas. The self-esteem at home is the most relevant with parents' nurturing attitude, and the self-esteem at school is more affected by other factors than by the parents' nurturing attitude.

An Exploration of Science Enrichment Learning Program for the Science Gifted in General Elemetary and Secondary School (일반 초중등학교에서 과학영재를 위한 과학 심화학습 프로그램의 탐색)

  • In order to explore the science enrichment learning program for the science gifted in general elemetary and secondary schoo1,the identification of the science gifted, gifted education methods and science education cumculums were investigated through literature survey. Admitting the Renzulli's enrichment triad model and three dmensional scienctific factors as context, process and content, the snow ball program was explored. Identification methods and science education cumculum of enrichment learning for the science gifted were presented. In the snow ball program, it was presented that each factor of three dimensional scienctific factors was focused in the different ways due to the levels or the ages of students. The examples of the snow ball program and science education cumculum of enrichment learning for the science gifted were illustrated.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the difference in APM. perfectionistic tendencies, and stress between the scientifically gifted and the regular students. As a result, The scientifically gifted students showed higher in APM score. The scientifically gifted students showed higher in perfectionistic tendencies but no significant differences was found. On the contrary, the regular students showed significantly higher in stress. This research analyzed the hypothesis that the gifted students would receive higher score in perfectionism and the stress.

  • As humanity embarks on its learning journey in the 21st century, education needs to take on new dimensions. This discourse focuses on the essentials of what educators could do to promote creative development in young gifted and talented students.Current practices in Singapore's Gifted Education Programme are shared. Future possibilities of educating the young gifted studentson their creative attributes like Piirto's 7 Is, brain functions, energy levels or intensities, volition, virtues and other personal and interpersonal skills will be explained. Gifted students are the captains of their own ships, the pilot of their own planes. Teaching them about their creative potential is the first step in awakening their consciousness from within. It is up to them to decide to become more creative with support from parents and teachers thereafter.

The Relationships among Scientifically Gifted Students' Science Related Attitudes, Learning Motivation and Learning Strategy (과학 영재의 과학에 대한 태도와 학습동기 및 학습전략과의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among scientifically gifted students' science related attitudes, learning motivation and learning strategy. Subjects were 135 middle school students enrolled at a Center for Science Gifted and Talented Education. There was no difference among talented divisions according to science related attitudes. But the score of the female students were higher than that of the male in learning motivation and learning strategy. Some significant correlation coefficients were between learning motivation and learning strategy. Also significant correlation coefficients were among 'career interest in science' domain, 'leisure interest in science' and 'social implication of science.'

  • This paper reports on student, parent, and teacher perspectives of the characteristics of the mathematically gifted. The data are extracted from a two-year qualitative study that examined multiple perspectives, school policy documents and program provision for 15 mathematically gifted and talented students aged from 10 to 13 years. The findings have implications for identification and program provision.

Assessing Korean Middle School Students' Spatial Ability: Comparison between Gifted Students and General Students (한국의 중학교 영재학생과 일반학생의 공간 능력의 차이에 관한 연구)

  • Spatial ability has been valued as one component of intelligence and as an talented domain. The researchers agree that spatial ability is associated with the achievements in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines and important in STEM education. The purpose of this study is to assess Korean middle school students' spatial ability and compare Gifted Students and General Students' spatial ability. For this purpose, 'The Revised PSVT:R' was translated into Korean and administered 509 Korean middle school students, and also internal consistency reliability evidence and construct validity evidence of 'The Revised PSVT:R' were examined. This study explored the spatial ability of Korean middle school students (graded 7 through 9), and investigated association between spatial ability and students' mathematics achievement, the students' spatial ability according to their gender and grade level. As a result, this study shows that gifted students were better than general students in spatial ability. And there were significant correlations between spatial ability and mathematics, science, Korean language achievement. According to these results, spatial ability should be included as one of the important components in identifying students for gifted education programs.

Influencing Factors on Deliberate Practice among Musically Talented Adolescents: On Passion and Achievement Goals (음악재능 청소년의 계획적 연습에 영향을 미치는 요인: 열정과 성취 목적을 중심으로)

  • This study was to examine whether musically talented adolescents' passion and achievement goals influence their deliberate practice. Of the musically talented adolescents surveyed from two arts high schools in Seoul, Korea, 597 completed and returned the questionnaires. Their average age was 17.4 years. Paired t-test on musically talented adolescents' passion(i.e., harmonious passion, and obsessive passion) and achievement goals(i.e., mastery goals, performance-approach goals, and performance-avoidance goals) indicated that harmonious passion were higher than obsessive passion. Mastery goals were higher than performance-approach goals. And performance-approach goals were higher than performance-avoidance goals. Independent t-tests were measured between high and low deliberate practice(DP) groups. High DP group showed higher harmonious and obsessive passion, and mastery and performance goals than low DP group. It was also found that two types of passion(i.e., harmonious and obsessive) positively influenced on deliberate practice via mastery goals.

A study of optimism level in the sifted (영재들의 낙관성 수준에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to inverstigate the optimism level of the gifted; to verify the differences in optimism level according to the types of the gifted; and to compare the optimism level of the gofted with that of mainstream students. 332 high school students participated in this study. They consisted of 45 science of gifted, 50 athletics gifted, 60 music gifted, 60 art gifted, 57 academic gifted, and 60 mainstreams students. The findings of this study were as follows: First, the optimism level of gifted was somewhat pessimistic. Second, the optimism levels of academic gifted and sciencd gifted was higher than that of athletic gifted and artistic gifted. Third, nonsignificant difference was found in the optimism level between gifted students and mainstream students.

The Performance Process Analysis of Goldberg Machine Activities based on Gender of Elementary Gifted Students (초등영재학생의 성별에 따른 골드버그 장치 활동 수행과정 분석)

  • In this study, by examining the characteristics of boys and girls which would appear in the performance process of Goldberg machine activities, it would be attempted to provide the implications for the development and teaching methods of gifted and talented programs. The object of study was organized into separate 2 groups of boys and girls by each, composed of a total of 16 people among 5th graders of the gifted class in elementary school, located in Gyeonggi province. The final assignment was to make the Goldberg machine in order to have the beads get to the target spot latest, in which the analysis was implemented qualitatively by participating in and observing the performance process of students. After dividing the Goldberg machine activities into the steps of planning, production, outcome, assessment and reflection, their analysis results are as follows: First, in the planning stage, the girls explained minutely the process of Goldberg machine in writing, whereas the boys represented it visually simply. Second, in the production stage, the boys showed the task commitment by trying to realize the machine as designed initially, but the girls showed their appearance to represent it simply and easily. Third, in the sophistication and efficiency of the machine production, the boys were superior to the girls, and in the creativity and diversity of the use of materials, the girls were more excellent. Fourth, in the assessment and reflection, the boys evaluated it individually, and the girls showed their appearance to evaluate it by reflecting others'thinking. Hence, when developing and teaching the gifted and talented programs, it would be required that the teaching and learning contents be recomposed by considering the gender, or that the various class strategies be sought. Further, the broader and more systematic studies, on the performance process of gifted students based on the gender, should be carried out.
