  • Precast hollow core slabs (HCS) are technically advanced products in the precast concrete industry, widely used in the last years due to their versatility, their multipurpose potential and their low cost. Using three dimensional FEM (Finite Element Method) elements, this study focuses on the stresses induced by the prestressing of steel. In particular the investigation of the spalling crack formation that takes place during prestressing is carried out, since it is important to assure the appropriate necessary margins concerning such stresses. In fact, spalling cracks may spread rapidly towards the web, leading to the detachment of the lower part of the slab. A parametric study takes place, capable of evaluating the influence of the tendon position and of the web width on the spalling stress. Consequently, after an extensive literature review on the topic of soft computing, an optimization of the HCS is performed by means of Genetic Algorithms coupled with 3-D FEM models.

  • The results of an investigation conducted to study the effect of crude oil contamination on the geotechnical properties of sand of presented. The effect of the degree of oil contamination on compaction characteristics, shear strength, and one-dimensional compression characteristics has been investigated. The test results indicate that the compaction characteristics are somewhat influenced by oil contamination. The angle of internal friction of sand (based on total stress basis) decreases due to the presence of oil within the pore spaces in sand. The compression characteristics of sand are significantly-influenced by oil contamination. The details of the tests conducted and the results are presented in the paper.

  • The results of a laboratory investigation for the influence of soil sties history, relative density of sand, pile surface condition depth and diameter on the behavior of piles in uplift are presented. Ultimate Uplife capacity depends not only on the relative density of sand but soil horizontal stress. The phenomena of critical depth can be explained by change of horizontal stress with depth. The value of Ktan tends to decreases with increasing pile diameter.

  • This paper presents the results of investigation on the influencing factors for GESC(Geogrid-Encased Stone Column) method in soft ground. A parametric study was then conducted on the influencing factors such as replacement ratio, geogrid stiffness and thickness of soft ground using stress-porepressure coupled analysis. The results indicate that the relationship between these parameters and settlement ratio, and the relationship between these parameters and stress concentration factor can be identified.

  • Tertiary unconsolidated mudstones spread throughout the eastern coast of Pohang area. Recently, the demand for high quality filling materials is increasing due to harbors and large-scale residential land development. But the features of the reclaimed land using soft mudstones have not been made clear yet. Unconsolidated rocks are diversely considered according to a different method of the applied geotechnical investigation. This study is examined that the applicability of mudstone as a harbor reclamation material through the laboratory test and pilot test. Expecially, it must be considered that the environmental characteristics of mudstone as a reclaimed materials.

  • This paper aims at the investigation of various seepage behavior when rainfall infiltarates into unsaturated ground and understanding of the mechanism for slope instability due to rainfall. For this purpose an experimental study is carried out for model slopes using the test equipment which can simulate various rainfall intensity. In addition, a numerical study is performed for the same dimension and boundary condition as the experimental model. From both the experimental test and numerical analysis the progress of wetting front with time, critical amounts of rainfall, and pore-water pressure development with time are know in detail and their effects on slope stability are described.

  • As a result of industrial advancement and land development, a number of highway slopes have been gradually formed and numerous problems related to their stability have been frequently caused. Generally, major factors for rock slope stability are lithology, slope inclination, slope height, degree of weathering, precipitation, condition of groundwater and so onl. Many complex factors are mostly involved in the collapse of rock slopes. In this study, a database for 94 collapsed Jungang highway slopes were set up using GIS program through literature search, site investigation, geological map and Korea tectonic province map. The analyses for the collapsed factor including sort of rock(by origin), tectonic province, highway direction, slope gradient and direction, degree of weathering, slope height were carried.

  • There has been a steady increase in geoenvironmental engineering projects where geotechnical engineering has been combined with environmental concerns. Many of these projects involve some investigation on geoenvironmental characteristics related to waste landfill and waste soil. This study was carried out to evaluate the geoenvironmental properties of sorted soil from unregulated landfill wastes. The physical, mechanical, and environmental Properties of sorted soil were investigated for utilization in civil works.

  • Behaviour of soil nailed walls in Korea has been analysed based on a number of field measurements. The investigation has included interface shear strength development at the nail-soil interface from pull-out tests, lateral ground displacements, tensile force distributions along soil nails and mobilised interface shear stress distributions. Insights into the soil nailed wall behaviour based on the shear transfer mechanism at the soil-nail interface and partial mobilisations of the interface shear strength, governed by relative shear displacement, are reported and discussed. It is expected that results from the current research can provide relevant parameters required for preliminary design of soil nailed walls in Korea.

  • It has been said from previous studies that the preconsolidation pressure (p$\sub$c/)of Nangton Rive. deposit is considerably less than the in situ effective burden pressure (p'$\sub$$\upsilon$ο/). Question has risen whether this small pc vale is due to under consolidation or unsuitable laboratory test including low small quality. As a cooperative research program between PHRI (Port and Harbor Research Institute) and Pusan National University, an extensive soil investigation was carried out at a site of Yangsan, Pusan, using the Japanese sampler. It Is found that although p$\sub$c/ value at the site is slightly greater than p'$\sub$$\upsilon$ο/, its over consolidation ratio (OCR) is quite small compared with aged normally consolidated clay in Japan.
