In this paper a nonlinear finite element analysis model is established for cold-formed steel zed-section purlins subjected to uplift loading. In the model, the lateral and rotational restraints provided by the sheeting to the purlin are simplified as a lateral rigid restraint imposed at the upper flange-web junction and a rotational spring restraint applied at the mid of the upper flange where the sheeting is fixed. The analyses are performed by considering both geometrical and material nonlinearities. The influences of the rotational spring stiffness and initial geometrical imperfections on the uplift loading capacity of the purlin are investigated numerically. It is found that the rotational spring stiffness has significant influence on the purlin performance. However, the influence of the initial geometric imperfections on the purlin performance is found only in purlins of medium or long length with no or low rotational spring stiffness.
Many papers which deal with the dynamic instability of shell-like structures under the STEP load have been published. But, there have been few papers related to the dynamic instability of hybrid cable domes. In this study, the dynamic instability of hybrid cable domes considering geometric nonlinearity is investigated by a numerical method. The characteristic structural behaviour of a cable dome shows a strong nonlinearity, so we determine the shape of a cable dome by applying initial stress and examine the indirect buckling mechanism under dynamic external forces. The dynamic critical loads are determined by the numerical integration of the nonlinear equation of motion, and the indirect buckling is examined by using the phase plane to investigate the occurrence of chaos.

Pressure hulls of submerged structures are generally designed as circular cylinders, spheres or cones with form of axisymmetric shell of revolution to withstand the high external pressure of deep ocean. The compressive buckling (implosion) due to hydrostatic pressure is the main concern of structural design of pressure hull and many design codes are provided for it. It is well-known that the buckling behavior of thin shell of revolution is very sensitive to the initial geometric imperfections introduced during the construction process of cutting and welding. Hence, the theoretical solutions for thin shells with perfect geometry often provide much higher buckling pressures than the measured data in tests or real structures and more precise structural analysis techniques are prerequisite for the safe design of pressure hulls. So this paper dealt with various buckling pressure estimation techniques for unstiffened circular cylinder under hydrostatic pressure conditions. The empirical design equations, eigenvalue analysis technique for critical pressure and collapse behaviors of thin cylindrical shells by the incremental nonlinear FE analysis were applied. Finally all the obtained results were compared with those of the pressure chamber test for the aluminium models. The pros and cons of each techniques were discussed and the most rational approach for the implosion of circular cylinder was recommended.

In this paper, the dynamic snapping of the 3-free-nodes spatial truss model was studied. A governing equation was derived considering geometric nonlinearity, and a model with various conditions was analyzed using the fourth order Runge-Kutta method. The dynamic buckling phenomenon was observed in consideration of sensitive changes to the force mode and the initial condition. In addition, the critical load level was analyzed. According to the results of the study, the level of critical buckling load elevated when the shape parameter was high. Parallelly, the same result was caused by the damping term. The sensitive asymmetrical changes showed complex orbits in the phase space, and the critical load level was also becoming lowly. In addition, as the value of damping constant was high, the level of critical load also increases. In particular, the larger the damping constant, the faster it converges to the equilibrium point, and the occurrence of snapping was suppressed.
Many researcher's efforts have made a significant advancement of space frame structure with various portion, and it becomes the most outsanding one of space structures. However, with the characteristics of thin and long term of spacing, the unstable behavior of space structure is shown by initial imperfection, erection procedure or joint, especially space frame structure represents more. This kind of unstable problem could not be set up clearly and there is a huge difference between theory and experiment. Moreover, the discrete structure such as space frame has more complex solution, this it is not easy to derive the formulation of design about space structure. In this space frame structure, the character of rise-span ratio or load mode is represented by the instability of space frame structure with initial imperfection, and snap-through or bifurcation might be the main phenomenon. Therefore, in this study, space frame structure which has a lot of aesthetic effect and profitable for large space covering single layer is dealt. And because that the unstable behavior due to variation of inner force resistance in the elastic range is very important collapse mechanism, I would like to investigate unstable character as a nonlinear behavior with a geometric nonlinear. In order to study the instability. I derive tangent stiffness matrix using finite element method and with displacement incremental method perform nonlinear analysis of unit space structure, star dome and 3-ring star dome considering rise-span $ratio(\mu}$ and load $ratio(R_L)$ for analyzing unstable phenomenon.
Many papers which deal with the dynamic instability of shell-like structures under the STEP load has been published but there have been few papers related to the dynamic instability of hybrid cable domes. And also there are a few researches which treat the essential phenomenon of the dynamic buckling using the phase for investigating occurrence of chaos. In this study the indirect buckling of hybrid cable domes considering geometric nonlinearity are investigated numerically and compared it with the static critical load The dynamic critical loads are determined by the numerical integration of the geometric nonlinear equation of motion and the mechanism of the indirect buckling is examined by using the phase curves.
The influence of spacers on the behaviour and ultimate capacity of intermediate length CFS open section columns under axial compression is investigated in this paper. The focus of the research lies in the cross- section predominantly, failed by distortional buckling. This paper made an attempt to either delay or eliminate the distortional buckling mode by the introduction of transverse elements referred herein as spacers. The cross-sections investigated have been selected by performing the elastic buckling analysis using CUFSM software. The test program considered three different columns having slenderness ratios of 35, 50 & 60. The test program consisted of 14 pure axial compression tests under hinged-hinged end condition. Models have been analysed using finite element simulations and the obtained results are compared with the experimental tests. The finite element package ABAQUS has been used to carry out non-linear analyses of the columns. The finite element model incorporates material, geometric non-linearities and initial geometric imperfection of the specimens. The work involves a wide parametric study in the column with spacers of varying depth and number of spacers. The results obtained from the study shows that the depth and number of spacers have significant influence on the behaviour and strength of the columns. Based on the nonlinear regression analysis the design equation is proposed for the selected section.

Based on third-order shear deformation shell theory, the present paper investigates post-buckling properties of eccentrically stiffened metal foam curved shells/panels having initial geometric imperfectness. Metal foam is considered as porous material with uniform and non-uniform models. The single-curve porous shell is subjected to in-plane compressive loads leading to post-critical stability in nonlinear regime. Via an analytical trend and employing Airy stress function, the nonlinear governing equations have been solved for calculating the post-buckling loads of stiffened geometrically imperfect metal foam curved shell. New findings display the emphasis of porosity distributions, geometrical imperfectness, foundation factors, stiffeners and geometrical parameters on post-buckling properties of porous curved shells/panels.
One of the most common applications of ferrocement is the manufacturing of thin stiffened plates which are prone to buckling. This study focuses on the investigation of the behavior of a ferrocement plate, stiffened in both directions by means of an appropriate grid of ribs. In the present paper detailed three-dimensional numerical Finite Element models are formulated for the simulation of the behavior of the structure under study, which are able to take into account both the geometric and material non-linearities that are present in the subject at hand (plasticity, cracking, large displacements). The difference among the formulated models lies on the use of different types of finite elements. The numerical results obtained by each model are compared and the most efficient model is determined. Finally, this model is in the sequel used for the further investigation of the effect of different parameters on the ultimate load capacity, such as the initial out-of-plane imperfection of the plate and the interaction between the axial loads in both directions.

Single-layer latticed domes, which ore consisted of slender linear elements, are able to transmit external loads to the structure by in-plane forces, therefore spatial structures can be constructed with the merit of its own lightweight. But, as external load reaches to any critical level at which each member has not material nonlinearity, the single-layer latticed dome shows unstable phenomenon. In particular, pin-connected single-layer latticed domes have much complicate unstable phenomena that are combined with nodal buckling and member buckling. Furthermore, single-layer latticed domes are very sensible to the initial imperfection which occurred inevitably in construction. In this study, we are going to grasp the characteristics of instability for the latticed dome by finite element method considering geometrical nonlinearity.
