  • Sweep geometric models are based on the notion of moving a curve, surface or solid along some path. Sweeping allows definition of prismatic shell surfaces in a simple way, This paper describes an application of sweep geometric models for the optimization of prismatic shells. This geometric model is integrated with finite element formulations. A nine-node degenerated shell element is adopted to calculate the response of prismatic shells. Several examples we presented to demonstrate the process of optimization. From numerical examples, it is observed that sweep geometric models provide an efficient and reliable way of obtaining optimal solutions for a large class of prismatic shell structures.

  • In this paper, design optimization for mixed-flow pump impellers and diffusers has been studied using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code and DOE (design of experiments). We also discussed how to improve the performance of the mixed-flow pump by designing the impeller and diffuser. Geometric design variables were defined by the vane plane development, which indicates the blade-angle distributions and length of the impeller and diffusers. The vane plane development was controlled using the blade-angle in a fixed meridional shape. First, the design optimization of the defined impeller geometric variables was achieved, and then the flow characteristics were analyzed in the point of incidence angle at the diffuser leading edge for the optimized impeller. Next, design optimizations of the defined diffuser shape variables were performed. The importance of the geometric design variables was analyzed using $2^k$ factorial designs, and the design optimization of the geometric variables was determined using the response surface method (RSM). The objective functions were defined as the total head and the total efficiency at the design flow rate. Based on the comparison of CFD results between the optimized pump and base design models, the reason for the performance improvement was discussed.

  • A sectional analysis of trunk-lid carried out by using the equilibrium approach based on the force balance together with geometric relations and plasticity theory. In computing a force balance equation, it is required to define a geometric curve approximating the shape of sheet metal at any step of deformation from the interaction between the die and the deformed sheet. The trunk-lid panel material is assumed to possess normal anisotropy and to obey Hill's new yield criterion. Deformation of each section of trunk-lid panel is simulated and composed to get the three-dimensional shape by using CAD technique. It was shown that the three-dimensional shape composition of the two-dimensional analysis.

  • This study is aimed to assess the stability of cable bridge by determining the geometric shape of the suspension bridge among the domestic coastal structures in public use after their completion of construction and the displacement of the target suspension bridge after public use. For this purpose, this study calculated the length between pylon piers for each period, sag, sag ratio and the displacement of pylon. Compared to the management standards for each step across different pylon behaviors of the target suspension bridge, this study found that the target suspension bridge behaves stably within the maintenance standards. To identify the behaviors of a suspension bridge accurately, the priority is put on the determination of geometric shape. Therefore, it is required to determine the surveyed shape model on a regular basis across public use period and increased traffics, which is expected to contribute considerably to ensuring the stability of the suspension bridge in its maintenance.

  • Two rotational motions of the 5-axis machine tool maximize the degree of freedom of the tool axis vector, which improves tool accessibility; however, this lowers feed speed and rigidity, which impairs machining stability. In addition, cutting efficiency is lowered when compared with a flat end mill because typically, the ball-end mill is used when machining by rotational motion. This study increased cutting efficiency by using a corner radius flat end mill during impeller roughing. Furthermore, we proposed a fixed controlled machining of the rotary motion using geometric shape information to improve the feed speed and machining stability. Finally, we proposed a finishing tool path generation method using a vector net to increase the convenience and practicality of tool path generation. To verify its effectiveness, we compared the machining time, shape accuracy, and surface quality of the proposed method and an existing dedicated module.

  • A variational formulation for plane elasticity problems is derived based on an isogeometric approach. The isogeometric analysis is an emerging methodology such that the basis functions in analysis domain arc generated directly from NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) geometry. Thus. the solution space can be represented in terms of the same functions to represent the geometry. The coefficients of basis functions or the control variables play the role of degrees-of-freedom. Furthermore, due to h-. p-, and k-refinement schemes, the high order geometric features can be described exactly and easily without tedious re-meshing process. The isogeometric sensitivity analysis method enables us to analyze arbitrarily shaped structures without re-meshing. Also, it provides a precise construction method of finite element model to exactly represent geometry using B-spline base functions in CAD geometric modeling. To obtain precise shape sensitivity, the normal and curvature of boundary should be taken into account in the shape sensitivity expressions. However, in conventional finite element methods, the normal information is inaccurate and the curvature is generally missing due to the use of linear interpolation functions. A continuum-based adjoint sensitivity analysis method using the isogeometric approach is derived for the plane elasticity problems. The conventional shape optimization using the finite element method has some difficulties in the parameterization of boundary. In isogeometric analysis, however, the geometric properties arc already embedded in the B-spline shape functions and control points. The perturbation of control points in isogeometric analysis automatically results in shape changes. Using the conventional finite clement method, the inter-element continuity of the design space is not guaranteed so that the normal vector and curvature arc not accurate enough. On tile other hand, in isogeometric analysis, these values arc continuous over the whole design space so that accurate shape sensitivity can be obtained. Through numerical examples, the developed isogeometric sensitivity analysis method is verified to show excellent agreement with finite difference sensitivity.

  • Purpose: Sex determination can be done by morphological analysis of different parts of the body. The mastoid region, with its anatomical location at the skull base, is ideal for sex identification. Statistical shape analysis provides a simultaneous comparison of geometric information on different shapes in terms of size and shape features. This study aimed to investigate the geometric morphometry of the inter-mastoid triangle as a tool for sex determination in the Iranian population. Materials and Methods: The coordinates of 5 landmarks on the mastoid process on the 80 cone-beam computed tomographic images(from individuals aged 17-70 years, 52.5% female) were registered and digitalized. The Cartesian x-y coordinates were acquired for all landmarks, and the shape information was extracted from the principal component scores of generalized Procrustes fit. The t-test was used to compare centroid size. Cross-validated discriminant analysis was used for sex determination. The significance level for all tests was set at 0.05. Results: There was a significant difference in the mastoid size and shape between males and females(P<0.05). The first 2 components of the Procrustes shape coordinates explained 91.3% of the shape variation between the sexes. The accuracy of the discriminant model for sex determination was 88.8%. Conclusion: The application of morphometric geometric techniques will significantly impact forensic studies by providing a comprehensive analysis of differences in biological forms. The results demonstrated that statistical shape analysis can be used as a powerful tool for sex determination based on a morphometric analysis of the inter-mastoid triangle.

  • Inserting a nozzle assembly into a removed cutting space during a continuous cutting operation is necessary in rock excavation using an abrasive waterjet. In this study, a combined two nozzle assembly is used to secure enough removal width. The shape of the cut space is affected by the geometric parameters (standoff distance, nozzle angle, and vertical distance between the nozzle tips) of the combined nozzle assembly. Abrasive waterjet cutting tests are performed with various geometric parameters for granite rock specimens. Optimized geometric parameters for the nozzle inserting process are determined and verified through the experimental tests.

  • Shell-typed structures can make resistance to external forces efficiently, and have merits to construct the large-span structures with thin thickness. This merits are highly depending on the shape of structure. Therefore designers want to the optimum shape, but it is not so easy to find the shape. So far there are many schemes to find more optimum shape, and those methods have their own characteristics. In this study, the authors introduce a relatively easy approach to find optimum shape by the finite element method considering geometric nonlinearity. We are finding the optimum shape of a shell-typed structure using line elements, and compared the results by various analytic models.
