  • This paper presents an approach to derive probability models for use in structural reliability studies. Two main points are made. First, that it is possible to translate engineering and physics knowledge into a requirement on the form of a probability model. And second, that making assumptions about a probability model for structural failure implies either explicit or hidden assumptions about material and structural properties. The work is foundational in nature, but is developed with explicit examples taken from planar and general stress problems, the von Mises failure criterion, and a modified Weibull distribution.

  • The study of non-self-adjoint operator algebras on Hilbert space was only beginned by W.B. Arveson[1] in 1974. Recently, such algebras have been found to be of use in physics, in electrical engineering, and in general systems theory. Of particular interest to mathematicians are reflexive algebras with commutative lattices of invariant subspaces.

  • We present preliminary numerical simulations of tilted-disk accretion around a rotating black hole. Our goal is to explore whether hydrodynamic instabilities near the Bardeen-Petterson radius could be responsible for generating moderate-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations in X-ray binaries. We review the relevant general relativistic hydrodynamic equations, and discuss preliminary results on the structure and dynamics of a thin, Keplerian disk.

  • We use the (G'/G)-expansion method to seek the traveling wave solution of the Seventh-order Sawada-Kotera Equation. The solutions that we get are more general than the solutions given in literature. It is shown that the (G'/G)-expansion method provides a very effective and powerful mathematical tool for solving nonlinear equations in mathematical physics.

  • The M-AUSMPW+ scheme that can capture shock waves exactly with monotonic characteristics is modifided from AUSMPW+ by analyzing the cause of oscillation in shock regions. Firstly shock-capturing characteristics of general FVS including the AUSM-type schemes are investigated in detail, according to the difference between a cell-interface and a sonic transition position. The cause of oscillation is the improper numerical dissipation that could not represent the real Physics. The M-AUSMPW+ could capture shocks exactly without oscillatory behaviors in considering the sonic transition position and an cell-interface position.

  • The influence of nonlinear phenomena on the behavior of stationary forced flexural-gravity waves on the surface of deep water is investigated, when the perturbation of external pressure moves with near-resonant velocity. It is shown that there are three branches of bounded stationary solutions turning into asymptotic solutions of the linear problem with zero initial conditions. For the first time ice sheet destruction by turbulent fluctuations of atmosphere pressure in ice adjacent layer in wind conditions is studied.

  • This paper explores two such indexes----the Aerosol Free Vegetation Index (AFRI) and the Atmospherically Resistant Vegetation Index (ARVI). Comparisons were made with the NDVI (normalized vegetation index) to see if they indeed performed better. In general, the results showed that the AFRI and ARVI (with gamma=1) did indeed perform better than their NDVI counterpart study with the related channels were employed.

Optical phonon and scattering in uniaxial crystals

  • We investigate Frohlich-like electron--optical-phonon interactionsin uniaxial crytals based on the macroscopic dielectric continuum model. In general, the optical-phonon branches support mixed longitudinal and transverse modes due to the anisotropy. For heterostructures with double interfaces and superlattices, it is known that confined, interface, and half-space optical phonon modes exist in zincblende cystals. In uniaxial structures, additional propagating modes may exist in wurtzite heterosystems due to anisotropic phonon dispersion. This is especially the case when the dielectric properties of the adjacent heterostructure materials do not differ substantially. The dispersion relations and the interaction Hamiltonians for each of these modes are derived.

Simulating phase transition phenomena of the unitary cell model

  • Lattice process models are used to explain phase transitions in statistical mechanics, a branch of physics. The Ising model, a specific form of lattice process model, was proposed by Ising in 1925. Since then, variants of the Ising model such as the Potts model and the unitary cell model have been proposed. Like the Ising model, it is believed that the more general models exhibit phase transitions on the critical surface, which is based on the mathematical equation. In statistical sense, phase transitions can be simulated through Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). We applied Swendsen-Wang algorithm, a block Gibbs algorithm, to a general lattice process models and we simulate phase transition phenomena of the unitary cell model.

  • The results of the analyses of 431 doctoral disserations of science education (Dissertation Abstracts International. 1980-1984) are as follows : 1. It was recognized that many countries as well as USA(e.g. Canada, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, The Netherlands etc.) have deep interest in science education. 2. About 60% of dissertations had been focused on middle school (junior and senior)and college students as the subject of investigation. 3. Disciplines of science concerning the subject showed general science (35.6%), biology (18.3%), physics (11.4%), chemistry (11.4%), earth science (4.6%), and others (18.7%). 4. The number of dissertations belonging to experimental research was over 60 more than that of dissertations belonging to theoretical research. 5. In methodology of research, examination, test, questionaire were general method, and the field of research was focused mainly on the academic achievement.
