  • In this paper, we study spacelike rotational surfaces which are called boost invariant surfaces in Minkowski 4-space $\mathbb{E}^4_1$. We give necessary and sufficient condition for flat spacelike rotational surface to have pointwise 1-type Gauss map. Also, we obtain a characterization for boost invariant marginally trapped surface with pointwise 1-type Gauss map.

  • In this paper, we handle the Gauss map of a tubular surface which is constructed according to the parallel transport frame of its spine curve. We show that there is no tubular surface having harmonic Gauss map. Moreover, we give a complete classification of this kind of tubular surface having pointwise 1-type Gauss map in Euclidean 4-space ${\mathbb{E}}^4$.

  • In this article, we study generalized slant cylindrical surfaces (GSCS's) with pointwise 1-type Gauss map of the first and second kinds. Our main results state that GSCS's with pointwise 1-type Gauss map of the first kind coincide with surfaces of revolution with constant mean curvature; and the right cones are the only polynomial kind GSCS's with pointwise 1-type Gauss map of the second kind.

  • We study translation surfaces in the Euclidean 3-space 3 and the Gauss map N with respect to the so-called Cheng-Yau operator ☐. As a result, we prove that the only translation surfaces with Gauss map N satisfying ☐N = AN for some 3 × 3 matrix A are the flat ones. We also show that the only translation surfaces with Gauss map N satisfying ☐N = AN for some nonzero 3 × 3 matrix A are the cylindrical surfaces.

  • We express Gauss sums for symplectic and orthogonal groups over finite fields as averages of exponential sums over certain maximal tori. Together with our previous results, we obtain some interesting identities involving various classical Gauss and Kloosterman sums.

  • In this paper, we study rotation surfaces in the Minkowski 3-dimensional space with pointwise 1-type Gauss map and obtain by the use of the concept of pointwise finite type Gauss map, a characterization theorem concerning rotation surfaces and constancy of the mean curvature of certain open subsets on these surfaces.

  • This paper presents a time-domain Gauss-Newton full-waveform inversion method for the material profile reconstruction in heterogeneous semi-infinite solid media. To implement the inverse problem in a finite computational domain, perfectly-matchedlayers( PMLs) are introduced as wave-absorbing boundaries within which the domain's wave velocity profile is to be reconstructed. The inverse problem is formulated in a partial-differential-equations(PDE)-constrained optimization framework, where a least-squares misfit between measured and calculated surface responses is minimized under the constraint of PML-endowed wave equations. A Gauss-Newton-Krylov optimization algorithm is utilized to iteratively update the unknown wave velocity profile with the aid of a specialized regularization scheme. Through a series of one-dimensional examples, the solution of the Gauss-Newton inversion was close enough to the target profile, and showed superior convergence behavior with reduced wall-clock time of implementation compared to a conventional inversion using Fletcher-Reeves optimization algorithm.

  • In the present article we study a special class of surfaces in the four-dimensional Euclidean space, which are one-parameter systems of meridians of the standard rotational hypersurface. They are called meridian surfaces. We show that a meridian surface has a harmonic Gauss map if and only if it is part of a plane. Further, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a meridian surface to have pointwise 1-type Gauss map and find all meridian surfaces with pointwise 1-type Gauss map.
