Effects of Spark Plug Changes on Performance of an SI Engine Fueled by Gaseous Fuel (스파크플러그 변화에 따른 가스 엔진 성능 변화)

  • Renewable gas fuels such as biogas and landfill gas are obtained from the biodegradable organic wastes so that they inherently have carbon-neutral nature which can respond global warming. Therefore, attentions are paid to use this renewable gases as a main fuel for internal combustion engines. However, the composition of the fuel varies by its origin or conversion process, it is necessary to make stable combustion and accomplish high efficiency when used in power generating spark ignition (SI) engines. In this study, efforts have been made to investigate the effect of the composition of renewable gas fuel on the engine performance and exhaust emissions. In addition, a new spark plug with a long electrode was tested and compared with a base spark plug as a way to improve engine efficiency and reduce harmful emissions.

The In-Situ Ozone Oxidative Remediation Potential of Diesel Fuel-contaminated Soil (디젤오염토양에 대한 지중 오존산화처리 적용 가능성)

  • This paper includes the basic experimental results performed for developing an innovative and technologically feasible process wherein gaseous ozone, a powerful oxidant. is injected directly into vadose zone by which in-situ chemical degradation of semi- or, non-volatile petroleum product such as diesel fuel is derived. As ozone gas injected continuously(50mL/min, 119.0$\pm$6.1mg/L) into soil packed columns artificially contaminated with diesel fuel(initial concentration 1,485mg-DRO/kg/soil), the removal rates at the inlet and outlet point of 14hrs-operated column are 87.9% and 100.0%, respectively. On the other hand, soil vapor extraction system showed less than 30% of removal rates of residual diesel both at the inlet and outlet samples under the same experimental conditions which confirms the limited treatability of SVE in diesel contaminated soil.

Effect of Deposition Parameters on the Property of Silicon Carbide Layer in Coated Particle Nuclear Fuels (피복입자핵연료에서 증착조건이 탄화규소층의 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Tri-isotropic (TRISO) coatings on zirconia surrogate beads are deposited using a fluidized-bed vapor deposition (FB-CVD) method. The silicon carbide layer is particularly important among the coated layers because it acts as a miniature pressure vessel and a diffusion barrier to gaseous and metallic fission products in the TRISO-coated particles. In this study, we obtain a nearly stoichiometric composition in the SiC layer coated at $1400^{\circ}C$, $1500^{\circ}C$, and $1400^{\circ}C$ with 20 vol.% methyltrichlorosilane (MTS), However, the composition of the SiC layer coated at $1300-1350^{\circ}C$ shows a difference from the stoichiometric ratio (1:1). The density decreases remarkably with decreasing SiC deposition temperature because of the nanosized pores. The high density of the SiC layer (${\geq}3.19g/cm^2$) easily obtained at $1500^{\circ}C$ and $1400^{\circ}C$ with 20 vol.% MTS did not change at an annealing temperature of $1900^{\circ}C$, simulating the reactor operating temperature. The evaluation of the mechanical properties is limited because of the inaccurate values of hardness and Young's modulus measured by the nano-indentation method.

Effect of Deposition Temperature on the Property of Pyrolytic SiC Fabricated by the FBCVD Method (유동층 화학기상증착법을 이용하여 제조된 열분해 탄화규소의 특성에 미치는 증착온도의 영향)

  • Silicon carbide(SiC) layer is particularly important tri-isotropic (TRISO) coating layers because it acts as a miniature pressure vessel and a diffusion barrier to gaseous and metallic fission products in the TRISO coated particle. The high temperature deposition of SiC layer normally performed at $1500-1650^{\circ}C$ has a negative effect on the property of IPyC layer by increasing its anisotropy. To investigate the feasibility of lower temperature SiC deposition, the influence of deposition temperature on the property of SiC layer are examined in this study. While the SiC layer coated at $1500^{\circ}C$ obtains nearly stoichiometric composition, the composition of the SiC layer coated at $1300-1400^{\circ}C$ shows discrepancy from stoichiometric ratio(1:1). $3-7{\mu}m$ grain size of SiC layer coated at $1500^{\circ}C$ is decreased to sub-micrometer (< $1{\mu}m$) $-2{\mu}m$ grain size when coated at $1400^{\circ}C$, and further decreased to nano grain size when coated at $1300-1350^{\circ}C$. Moreover, the high density of SiC layer (${\geq}3.19g/cm^3$) which is easily obtained at $1500^{\circ}C$ coating is difficult to achieve at lower temperature owing to nano size pores. the density is remarkably decreased with decreasing SiC deposition temperature.

CONCENTRATION CONTOURS IN LATTICE AND GRAIN BOUNDARY DIFFUSION IN A POLYCRYSTALLINE SOLID

  • Grain boundary diffusion plays significant role in the fission gas release, which is one of the crucial processes dominating nuclear fuel performance. Gaseous fission products such as Xe and Kr generated inside fuel pellet have to diffuse in the lattice and in the grain boundary before they reach open space in the fuel rod. In the mean time, the grains in the fuel pellet grow and shrink according to grain growth kinetics, especially at elevated temperature at which nuclear reactors are operating. Thus the boundary movement ascribed to the grain growth greatly influences the fission gas release rate by lengthening or shortening the lattice diffusion distance, which is the rate limiting step. Sweeping fission gases by the moving boundary contributes to the increment of the fission gas release as well. Lattice and grain boundary diffusion processes in the fission gas release can be studied by 'tracer diffusion' technique, by which grain boundary diffusion can be estimated and used directly for low burn-up fission gas release analysis. However, even for tracer diffusion analysis, taking both the intragranular grain growth and the diffusion processes simultaneously into consideration is not easy. Only a few models accounting for the both processes are available and mostly handle them numerically. Numerical solutions are limited in the practical use. Here in this paper, an approximate analytical solution of the lattice and stationary grain boundary diffusion in a polycrystalline solid is developed for the tracer diffusion techniques. This short closed-form solution is compared to available exact and numerical solutions and turns out to be acceptably accurate. It can be applied to the theoretical modeling and the experimental analysis, especially PIE (post irradiation examination), of low burn up fission. gas release.

The Study on Performance and Emission of CNG as a Potential Fuel in Kore (한국의 잠재적인 연료인 CNG연료의 성능 및 배출물에 관한 연구)

  • Gasoline engine have proved its utility in light, medium and heavy duty vehicle in every sector of the world community. The concern about long term availability of petroleum and the increasing threat for the environment by the increasing load of vehicular emission, compel the technology to upgrade itself for meeting the challenges. CNG is environmentally clean alternative to the existing SI Engines with out much change in the hardware. Many researchers have found this as a potential substitute to meet the energy requirement. Higher octane number and higher self ignition temperature make it a good gaseous fuel. Although power output is slightly lesser than the gasoline it's thermal efficiency is better than the gasoline for the same SI Engine. Results showed that reduced CO, hydrocarbon emissions is a favorable outcome, with slight increase in NOx emission when compared with gasoline fuel to dual fuel mode in the existing SI Engines.

  • The vast stores of biomass available in the worldwide have the potential to displace significant amounts of fuels that are currently derived from petroleum sources. Fast pyrolysis of biomass is one of possible paths by which we can convert biomass to higher value products. The wood pyrolysis oil (WPO), also known as the bio crude oil (BCO), has been regarded as an alternative fuel for petroleum fuels to be used in diesel engine. However, the use of WPO in a diesel engine requires modifications due to low energy density, high water contents, low acidity, and high viscosity of the WPO. One of the easiest way to adopt WPO to diesel engine without modifications is emulsification of WPO with diesel or bio diesel. In this study, a DI diesel engine operated with diesel, bio diesel (BD), WPO/BD emulsion was experimentally investigated. Performance and gaseous & particle emission characteristics of a diesel engine fuelled by WPO/BD emulsion were examined. Results showed that stable engine operation was possible with emulsion and engine output power was comparable to diesel and bio diesel operation.

Combustion Characteristics and Exhaust Emissions in Spark-ignition Engine Using Gasoline-ammonia (가솔린 엔진에서 가솔린-암모니아 혼합 연료의 연소 및 배기 특성)

  • The effect of gaseous ammonia direct injection on the engine performance and exhaust emissions in gasoline-ammonia dual fueled spark-ignition engine was investigated in this study. Results show that based on the gasoline contribution engine power increases as the ammonia injection timing and duration is advanced and increased, respectively. However, as the initial amount of gasoline is increased the maximum power output contribution from ammonia is reduced. For gasoline-ammonia, the appropriate injection timing is found to range from 320 BTDC at low loads to 370 BTDC at high loads and the peak pressures are slightly lower than that for gasoline due to the slow flame speed of ammonia, resulting in the reduction of combustion efficiency. The brake specific energy consumption (BSEC) for gasoline-ammonia has little difference compared to the BSEC for gasoline only. Ammonia direct injection causes slight reduction of $CO_2$ and CO for all presented loads but significantly increases HC due to the low combustion efficiency of ammonia. Also, ammonia direct injection results in both increased ammonia and NOx in the exhaust due to formation of fuel NOx and ammonia slip.

  • To investigate the effect of the oxidizer mass flow rate on the fuel regression rate of the hybrid rocket, a laboratory size rocket was designed and ground fire test were carried out.   • Power generation systems based on the oxy-coal combustion with carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) capability are being proposed and discussed lately. Although a large number of lab scale studies for oxy-coal power plant have been made, studies of pilot scale or commercial scale power plant are not enough. Only a few demonstration projects for oxy-coal power plant are publicized recently. The proposed systems are evolving and various alternatives are to be comparatively evaluated. This paper presents a proposed approach for performance evaluation of a commercial 100 MWe class power plant, which is currently being considered for 'retrofitting' for the demonstration of the concept. The system is configurated based on design and operating conditions with proper assumptions. System components to be included in the discussion are listed. Evaluation criteria in terms of performance are summarized based on the system heat and mass balance and simple performance parameters, such as the fuel to power efficiency and brief introduction of the second law analysis. Also, gas composition is identified for additional analysis to impurities in the system including the purity of oxygen and unwanted gaseous components of nitrogen, argon and oxygen in air separation unit and $CO_2$ processing unit.
