  • The purpose of this study is to configure the spaces and elements of the roof-garden plan that users regard as important, and to investigate their preferred spaces and facilities, ultimately providing basic information for the planning of user-directed roof gardens for local residents. A questionnaire survey was used as the research method, targeting roof-garden users in the L department store of Jeollabuk-do. A total of 225 people responded to the questionnaire, and 223 of them were used for this study. The collected data was analyzed in SPSS ver.18.0, using frequency, percentage, t-test, and one way ANOVA. The respondents preferred rest space the most, followed by the convenient space, landscaping and green space, and play and exercise space. Teenage students preferred the pool and artificial spaces, such as a fountain, and planned convenient spaces and rest spaces, such as a playground. Cafes and restaurants, chairs and tables, and walking trails should be considered for single women in their twenties. Due to the high population of married couples in their thirties, the preference for play facilities and safety facilities was higher than in other groups. The well-educated population in their forties, when viewed from their preference for landscaping and green space, requires the opportunity to rest in nature. The results of this study cannot be generalized since the study was directed at roof-garden users in a department store in Jeollabuk-do. However, it is possible to provide specific information about the user-directed roof-garden plan, since the study was analyzed together with various user variables.

Meanwhile, there were differences of preference for location and garden components between residents and visitors. The results implicated that residents' preference and characteristics of a community are essential in designing a rural community garden, which will lead to sustainable garden construction.

In the primitive agricultural era, the garden was preceded by vegetable yards and at this time rock arranging (Soo-Sok garden) was initiated together with the megalithis culture of dolmens, heavenly altars and tumuli. In the early Three Kingdom period palace gardens were built on a grand scale and toward the end of fourth century temple garden were introduced along with Buddhism. These gardens evolved to the flourishment of "HWAGE"(terraced gardens) rock arrangements of ZEN, early KOR-YO period. Especially since the middle of KOR-Yo period the "IM-CHUN"(forest and pond) garden became popular, while during Cho-Son period "HWAGE" in the back yard, pond and pool garden and "IM-CHUN" style country villa became fashionable. The Korea traditional Landscape garde may be characterized that first it is a nature Landscape style, which makes the maximum accomodation with the surrounding nature. • Welwyn Garden City benefits from the greater design cohesion and management of development which gave it a more distinctive 'brand image' almost from the outset than its older garden city(Letchworth, Hampstead). Its planner, Louis de Soissons, brought a more obvious sense of traditional formal urbanism to the design of the second garden city. This was rather different to the distinctive but rather more informal arts and crafts approach of Raymond Unwin. Here it attempts to analyze how they greatly and firmly established the concept of Housing Group in the residential design, and what similar elements between Unwin and de Soissons in the New Town planning. It is pointed out that the Housing Group theory is composed of recognizing urban life as totality, and group planning theory, and that they definitely originated a new technique in the residential area. It is analyzed that the syntactic relations between the group planning theory and enclosed housing cluster designs in the English garden city are epitomized in Welwyn Garden City.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the design method to embody the cultural heritage and to reproduce the image of Korean Traditional Garden these days. For this purpose, to begin with, the major elements which can be applied to the planning and design were extracted by to study on the prototype of Korean Traditional Garden, and the process and the outcome for reconstruction of traditional garden were presented by design proposal for the Korean Garden in the exhibition space of EXPO '90, the International Garden and Greenary Exposition, Osaka, Japan, 1990. The study on the prototype of Korean Garden is focused on the spatial organization, the facilities allocation, and the gardening technic of traditional garden, and the major contents of the case study are as follow ; (1) To investigate the constraints and the opportunities of site development by the analysis and the synthesis of the site condition for the case study, (2) To study on the planning technic which can be applied to the site, (3) To establish the planning models which can be introduced into the site and to choose the final model by the comparison and valuation of them, (4) To set up the Master Plan on the basis of the final model. In spite of the fact that the method and the contents have a lot of problems, the significance of this study is to present a possibility to reproduce the Korean Traditional Garden these days, moreover to grope for the opportunities to propagate it internationally.

  • We can infer from collections of prose in Cho-sun period that the main period is from King Se-jong's reign to King Yoeng-jo's or between the 15th and the 17th century. The ideological background and the dignity of the rock garden is derived from Taoist hermitism and Nitze and Jeng-je's quietism. The representation of the rock garden as tri-god mountain comprising Bong-lai, Bang-jang and Young-ju is based on the tradition of making the tripartite rock garden in a pond practiced in the three north-eastern countries, Korea, China and Japan. And it's the representation of quietistic world of eternal life that had been sought by the taoism. Making a pond in which they plant lotus and made rock garden. they enjoyed watching immaculately pure lotus flower bloom even in the mud. It is compared to the confucians' seeking for virtue even in the profane or defiled world. Another motive of intellectuals to make rock gardens is their love of nature and its landscapes and their preference of recluse and temperate life to attaching to high public office, which was the tendency of the learned, established by the influence of taoist and quietist tradition. The essays portray the fountain water, ponds, waterfalls. the hilltops, the mountain pass over the ridge. winded lanes, valleys, caverns, and other architectural elements. The technic of building rock gardens includes those of harmonizing each elements of landscapes in the water, that of irrigation, building formation, and those of piling up the mountains and hills. With some comments on planting trees, grass and flowers. The original location of rock garden, esp. in case of taoist Chae-su's rock garden with waterfalls, is Ian-ri, Ian-myon in the city Sang-ju. Since no relics of rock gardens are to be found in any examples of Korea's traditional gardening, the study of rock gardening by analyzing the prose collections of Cho-sun period can be significant for the study of designing water space that has been considered the center of a garden space.
